My month of hell

Recommended Posts

Been debating posting this because I don't normally start look at me threads. If you don't care please just move on. For those who have inquired and/or sent well wishes thank you and here is what happened and an update.

On June 24th I started feeling like crap. Just a bunch of generic symptoms like headaches and body just feeling like crap all over with no energy. Nothing specific until 7/5 when I had a massive abdominal pain that wouldn't go away. Ended up in the E.R. that night. Was diagnosed with uncomplicated diverticulitis (never heard of it) and given oral antibiotics to fight it and a liquid diet. Diverticulitis is basically an infection in the colon where we develop these little pockets due to our western diet. After going through the antibiotics for a week when I tried to wean myself back on to solid food about 12 hours later got another massive abdominal pain. Went back to Dr. and they gave me more oral antibiotics. This went on for a couple weeks but every time I tried to eat solid food the same thing would happen. Finally Dr. did another CT scan and as soon as he got it he told me to go to the E.R. again. The oral antibiotics were worthless and wouldn't help. I had a "perforation" and an "abscess". Basically, I had a little hole in my colon that would drip stool in to other parts of my body. Pretty focking disgusting.

Ended up in the hospital for a week and a half and had surgery on 7/26 where they removed the infected part of my colon. Was released this past Monday. Have a "picc" line in my arm where I still have to give myself I.V. based antibiotics daily. Lost about 30 pounds through this ordeal. Finally able to eat food again but appetite is still slowly coming back.

This is the first time I've been seriously ill so it scared the fock out of me. Getting older sucks.

That sucks. Were they able to hook your plumbing up back up the the usual way, or do you have an ostomy (sh!t bag)?

May sure your new diet includes plenty of fiber.

Thanks. My PCP was like "70 years ago this would have killed you" so I am very thankful to live in this era.

Before the surgery they prepared me for the possibility of having to use an ostomy bag for 6-8 weeks but told me that probably wouldn't be necessary. They marked places on my belly that were best for placing it. Fortunately, it wasn't needed and I was very happy to find that out after waking up.

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis about 5 months ago. I was eating a lot of unshelled peanuts at the time. I had a belly ache so I went in and they told me that I had to redo my diet. No peanuts. Nothing with skins or seeds. I am not kidding it was the worst pain I have ever had. I thought I was going to die. I hope you feel better.

I think we've been through this before, but the nuts/seed/popcorn association with diverticular disease has been debunked. It's all about the fiber, or lack thereof.

Glad to hear it worked out man. When can you enjoy an adult  again?

The day this all started we went to the Renaissance Faire here in Denver. Had about 3 beers there and started to feel bad when we got home. That's the last alcoholic beverage I've had. I've been cleared for a full diet so I could have one if I wanted but I'm gonna wait a bit longer. Hopefully before the regular season starts for sure.

I can confirm this. The night I went to the E.R. the first time I was thinking "now I know what women feel like going through labor". Thank god the first thing they did was ply me with drugs to get rid of the pain. Then we moved on to tests and diagnosis.

was it in your left lower stomach? Man I thought I might even have a kidney problem. I still get the pain once or twice a month but I have been very good at cutting things out of my diet that could possibly cause me to have issues. No nuts of any type, no seeds, nothing that has skins. I am talking like potatoes other than mashed. No skin on chicken, no rasberries, blackberries. No Coffee. I cut everything out of my diet and slowly reintroduced them.

It was throughout the abdomen. Maybe a little more pain in the lower left side. Research I did suggests it often is more painful there so that wouldn't be abnormal. Did they suggest you have a colonoscopy? I've heard that often they do that to decide if it's worth being proactive with surgery when the immediate attack can be treated without surgery.

They did. It was super unpleasant and I won't be going back in for one till they develop a different way. That being said I do not need the surgery. I simply need to watch what I am eating and make sure it is not something that is going to up my stomach. I actually have found a dish that cleanses me out completely. I eat it and a day after my pain is gone. Its like a flush to my system an I STG I feel like a new man once it passes through. Its really simple......Boiled asparagus, butter and noodles. Sounds nuts but this has been a lifesaver for me.

My dad got it once from eating hamburgers with seeds on the bun. Never at those hamburgers again.

They usually don't do colonoscopy for diverticulitis, or surgery. The surgery was needed because you perforated your colon.

Also, what you had was a sh!t-ton worse than run-of-the-mill diverticulitis. Diverticulitis causes localized pain and is usually easily treated, perforating your bowel causes diffuse pain and is life threatening.

Strike I also got a heating pad and when the pain comes back I lay on that and take hot showers. It really helps a lot.

I have heard that diverticulitis means you need to avoid eating stuff with seeds, like tomatoes. Is this true?

Ugh. No. That was old school medical advice, and some physicians erroneously will still tell their patients to avoid particulate foods like seeds and nuts. The truth is, it's more about effective bowel transit and reducing the pressure on your colon walls (insert joke here), which can be accomplished by eating a diet rich in fiber. Fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts all tend to have a decent amount of fiber, as opposed to meat, dairy and processed grains. In other words, a generally healthy diet is good for diverticulosis too.

I've heard if you just avoid things like seeds and nuts you will 100% guaranteed never have this happen. I dunno, I'm not a doctor, just what I heard.

Diverticulitis... sounds like colitis, or colic for a baby, in the group of fake things doctors "diagnose" to make it seem like they have found the problem and hope that your symptoms just go away. "umm, yeah, it's diverticulitis, here are some antibiotics which should clear things right up%$#@!"

Honestly, I get that there is a good chance that the problem is bacterial and that antibiotics will help, so prescribing them has a decent likelihood of helping vs. the cost of a bunch of tests. But when Strike went back and they prescribed a second round... really? That seems somewhere between lazy and criminal.

penny, tell me I'm wrong here.

I know that you have said this before, but a few years back I found that I had blood when I took a crap. No abdominal pain, just blood even though I had not spent any time in prison. I traced it to sunflower seeds. During baseball season, I would eat tons of them and if I have them now, I bleed, so I cut them out of my diet. No problem with peanuts or popcorn, though.

Not sure what it is, but I don't eat those seeds anymore and I have not had a problem since.
