Massachusetts comes out with new LGBTQ curriculum for classes

Bay State schools will be able to try a new curriculum with LGBTQ-themed history, English and health this fall that proponents say is an effort to help all students see themselves reflected in classrooms.
The curriculum, developed by a team of teachers with Massachusetts Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students and the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth, will be released this summer. It will feature lessons on the 1969 Stonewall Riots and writings by gay and lesbian authors such as Langston Hughes and Willa Cather. It will also feature lessons like how Nick Carraway’s love for Jay Gatsby may have influenced themes in “The Great Gatsby.”
“We talk about mirrors and windows,” said Jeff Perrotti, director of the Massachusetts Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students. “Students need to see themselves reflected and see others who are different from themselves. It is important that all students feel safe, valued and respected in school so they can be ready to learn.”
“If students don’t see themselves in the curriculum, they are not as likely to pay attention,” said commission director Corey Prachniak-Rincon. “It is a huge demand we hear from teachers. They recognize part of the reason why LGBTQ students feel excluded is they’re not reflected and that part of their identity is ignored.”
The units won’t be required — all curricular decisions are made at the local level — but they’ll be available as a resource to districts, said Jacqueline Reis, state education department spokeswoman.
Boston high schools will be among the first to use the curriculum and have already begun training teachers on how to support students who are coming out or who may be struggling with acceptance at home and from their peers. The Boston Teachers Union has already worked to staff schools to help LGBTQ students.
“There is a lot of anxiety in coming out as a student,” said Jessica Tang, president of the BTU, who is openly bisexual. “This is important. It is still hard for students and teachers to come out.”
Teachers and students at Charlestown High School, Another Course to College, Boston Green Academy, Boston International Newcomers Academy and New Mission High School, in partnership with Boston Public Schools’ Safe and Welcoming Schools initiative, have been training teachers on how to support kids.
On May 1, BPS will have a summit at the Boston Teachers Union Hall in Dorchester that will allow students to share their own stories.
“In my perfect world, students would feel affirmed with their identity and see themselves and when they went home they’d feel they were in a safe place,” said Danielle Murray, the BPS Safe and Welcoming Schools specialist.
Some 11 percent of Massachusetts high school students identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or questioning their sexual orientation and 2.9 percent indicated they were transgender, according to the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
Some 41 percent of LGBTQ youth have considered suicide. And LGBTQ kids are more likely to be homeless.
“There has been progress in general in society,” said Prachniak-Rincon. “Students are feeling more comfortable. Students are coming out much younger than they have. There may be support in school, but also a lot more students are dealing with it and they are dealing with it at a younger age.
“The issue of bullying, bias and discrimination — that is still a huge problem.”
Teachers say tasks from asking all students their gender pronoun while taking attendance at the beginning of the school year to putting up a “safe zone” sticker on the classroom door can make a difference in making students feel comfortable.
Kristin Comment, an English teacher at Belmont High School, said she already tries to include gay, lesbian and bisexual authors and stories, like Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway,” in her lessons just so kids can see themselves reflected. And she tries to normalize being gay, like when she talks about Walt Whitman, a gay poet and journalist.
“I would like to see more discussion of LGBTQ issues in the curriculum,” Comment said. “I don’t think there is enough yet. It is really up to classroom teachers to normalize being LGBTQ in the classroom. It is not only talking about it in the curriculum but being careful in the language they use, respecting the pronouns students use or not making heterosexist assumptions. Teachers can do a lot to help normalize LGBTQ. That would go a long way to make students feel safe.
“Students have come back after they graduated and they’ll tell me how important it was that I was out or that we talked about how Walt Whitman was gay,” Comment added. “It has an impact.”

Speaking of...What is your honest opinion of how Trump is handling things so far?

Not a snarky question,...I do value your opinion

We'll start with the positives.

I'm liking that the GOP is being reshaped in his direction. Trump himself is being hijacked by the Wall Street Republicans, promoting their agenda in the absence of one of his own. I wish Steve Bannon was still in the White House. Even so, the rest of the Washington GOP establishment noticed his success and are picking up on the fact that the folks back home are paying attention now to their own interests rather than the elites. A slew of the Paul Ryan types are leaving, the chameleons that stay are adapting to the new direction the party is headed. Hopefully the replacements are true believers, or at least as many as is possible. This is what I was hoping would happen.

Jeff Sessions is the best attorney general in forever, certainly of my lifetime. I love this guy. IMO, he's better than even Edwin Meese. Meese's advantage is that he was more influential with his president than Sessions is with his. Trump's pissed at him because he recuses himself and won't cover up the Mueller investigation, but that's just doing his job. It's Trump who's wrong on that. Sessions is saving Trump from himself.

the liberal cultural offensive has stalled. We can sure use the break to catch our breathe, shine light on what;s going and evaluate what it is they're doing.

He knows the words to the tune on trade and immigration. Especially trade which plays very well with sons of Macomb County and likely won him the election. We'll see if there's actions to back it up. Even if he does nothing though, standing still is better than going in the direction every other potential candidate wanted to go.

I'm thrilled with the court appointments. Hopefully Ruth Ba ... uh... nevermind. :ninja:

My very, very favorite thing about Trump during the election was during the debates looking left and right at candidates #2-#8 and calling them all out on the stupidity of the war in Iraq. :headbanger:  I said "Fuck Yeah!" out loud in front of my computer and pumped my fist.

And how he pisses cultural liberals off, gets them into a frothing at the mouth rage, it's so deliciously well deserved. I detest them and love seeing those sh*tbags squirm and wail in agony.

Moving on...

He's acting like a petty dictator in a banana republic. This obstruction of justice with the Mueller investigation and various attempts to fire, bully, or intimidate people is awful if not criminal. Normally 'awful if not criminal' would also mean 'intolerable' but when the other options are Team Hillary or Team Romney/Ryan/Jeb!, I can't help but find myself stuck with tolerating it.

A lot of his cabinet appointments are awful, specifically, Scott Pruitt in EPA and John Bolton as the new national security adviser are the worst. Everybody points their finger at Betsey DeVos too, but I disagree; I'm fine with her. Again, firing Steve Bannon had me upset, that was the guy I liked most.

I'm glad his Obamacare overhaul failed, I don't like how the tax cut targets the wealthy and leaves a massive hole in the budget leading to ever more deficits, anything he does with the environment is counterproductive, his ignorance on foreign affairs is embarrassing, although I do like his instincts. Well, until he hired John Bolton. Normally. We still have troops in Syria and Afghanistan and he just ordered that strike in Syria last week, I'd just give a bunch of equipment to the Kurds as a Thank You-going away present and evacuate the place.

As for Trump himself. I never much liked him before the election. He seemed like a shady con-man. He had that crooked Trump University real estate classes, The birther stuff, the lawsuits, the comment about bias against the Indiana judge of Mexican descent was pathetic. Building a wall with Mexico paying for it was an obvious, blatant campaign lie.

It seems for a long time he's been allowing the GOP establishment to set the agenda and he's not really delivering on the stuff the Trump voters want. He's allowing Congress to take the lead and all they want is the stuff the Jeb! voters want.

yah but there is no such thing as Slippery Slopes

I doubt anyone ever actually said that. What they likely said was that slippery slope arguments are syllogisms used by the weak and addle-minded.

Much like ridiculous extremes that no one ever said used as strawmen.

Now, can we get back to the fact we're talking about 3% of the population at best?

And honestly, I think a lot of these kids are faking being gay just to belong these days. Just to belong to some kind of a group. But the actual active but sex with another dude grosses them the hell out.

I bet we end up with a hell of a lot of I was gay in high school but now I'm not! Kind of stories in about 5 years. Once they get away from there parents pushing their own obvious agendas of course.

So there is a cure.

I'm thinking writing about being gay is a good topic to cover on a college admissions form.

California calls Massachusetts a bunch of losers

snippet

RedState contributor Kira Davis, a resident of Orange County, California, warns that among the teaching materials approved for use under this law are a study guide for the transgender children’s book I Am Jazz, as well as a “sexual health toolkit.”

This “toolkit,” funded in part by the George Soros-connected Tides Center, offers kids tips on using sex toys and anal lubricant. It defines “anal intercourse,” “phone sex,” and more as “common sexual behaviors.” It teaches that “abstinence” and “virginity” can mean engaging in a variety of sexual activities, but stopping short of intercourse.

“What if you don’t have time or money to buy sex toys?” the guide asks on page C-51. “Cucumbers, carrots, and bananas (with the peel) make great dildos. Just remember to use a condom!”

It teaches that one of the “cons” of abstaining from all sexual activity is that it “requires motivation, self-control and communication from both partners.”

The “toolkit” lists as resources Planned Parenthood and the radically pro-homosexual and pro-abortion group Advocates for Youth.

and on that note, I guess I am homeschooling my kid

Anyone else notice the GLQ?&%# crowd tends to give off a low IQ vibe? Perhaps it's because they only appear to be interested in their own sexuality and all the bs that goes with it. Maybe these classes are meant to try to raise their GPA.

Some 41 percent of LGBTQ youth have considered suicide.

This fact always stands out. Do these people commit suicide because they are LBQBTQ or do they commit suicide because they are mentally unstable and the LGBQTB thing is part of that mental instability?

Most advocates say that it's MY Fault they commit suicide cause I don't understand it. But I am willing to say they are already messed up.

Mentally stable people don't commit suicide.

The question is how many SERIOUSLY considered suicide. I think most kids think about suicide at some point of growing up but it is not a serious consideration.

20% of HS students have seriously considered suicide.

Studies have shown the rate does not drop when they grow up in a supportive house hold and community.

There is something wrong with their brain wiring which cause them to be they way they are. Instead of trying to help them. The left encourages their mental illness.

Knocked it out of the park

if someone acts crazy and has irrational thoughts, we try to get them help, even maybe force them into a mental institution. Unless they want to cut their cack off, then they are free to do as they wish
