I am going to give this Keto diet a try

Recommended Posts

It's not to lose weight. I do not need to lose any weight at all. It's more to see if it can delivery more consistent energy throughout the day. Also, I do want to see if avoiding carbs in favor of high fat has any impact on the general way I feel.

I was skeptical at first about consuming this much fat, but the science that told us how evil fat is seems to be unraveling. I also thought the diet meant more protein, which it doesn't. Just pure fat. The meals I have tried have already left me Fuller for longer.

I'm going to as well, but yes to drop about 50 lbs. as well as get away from sugar and flour simply to see how I feel.

I'm debating also. I also need to drop 40 lbs or so.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

If you have Netflix I would suggest watching this first.

Its not rocket science. Cut your caloric intake to 500 calories under maintenance every day and take up cardio 3-4 times per week. If you dont like jogging try walking on an incline treadmill 4 miles. That should burn 600-700 calories per workout. Youll drop 2-3 pounds per week.

This.

There's no magic to becoming more fit. Less in than out.

If you need more energy at the end of the day invest the $$ in heroin and Asian hookers.

Hey, it could end up being no big deal. The theory suggests that a more consistent energy will be achieved, and a healthier body by eating very low carb and high fat. Have you people even read the science at all? When cutting calories, people are left with an energy deficit which only increases cravings for high carbohydrate foods.

On keto high fat meals, people are supposed to be able to eat fewer meals and burn calories more efficiently. Plus the body burns fat as energy instead of glucose. It's not the same at all as just cut back on calorie diets. Plus, I'm not even doing this to lose weight

MDC doesn't know anything about this; he thinks if he keeps saying "a calorie is a calorie" it will eventually become true.

Ever lose those stubborn extra 5 lbs Jer?

I did, thanks for asking.

Until last night; I had a baked potato and some cake to celebrate my wife's birfday, gained 1/2 pound back. :(

I'm 51 and not looking for 5% body fat so I cheat sometimes. Also I travel most weeks and it is very difficult to eat well when you are in customer dinners with apps and desserts getting passed around. Also I get more fiber than you would in that diet, mostly from beans/legumes. My wife has concluded that they don't seem to impact her weight, and she cooks our meals so... I eat them. :dunno:

I've said it before; a Calorie is a unit of heat. For food that represents the maximum heat potentially generated by that food. It has nothing to do with how a particular type of food is processed within the body, or how efficiently. HTH.

My advice of eating 500 less calories than maintenance per day and getting a cardio workout 3-4 times per week is going to work. I lost 1-2 pounds a week that way until I lost around 30 total. I bet someone really overweight would drop 3 pounds or more per week stat.

Now I have about 2,200 calories per day and dont gain anything. All while enjoying delicious carbs and fresh breath. :D

Dieting is for chicks and fat dudes.... at least that's what I said until a few months back when I stepped on scale for the first time in decades. 177 lbs - most I've ever weighed in my life. Doesn't sound like much for a 5'11" man at 48 y.o., but I weighed 145 lbs after high school (I'm a very skinny dude), but over the years my beer gut grew to epic proportions. No surprise considering I drank like a fish, ate whatever I felt like, and rarely exercised. So for the first time in my life, I went healthy. I cut out breakfast and lunch, did sit-ups/push-ups, and ran a mile or so a couple times a week.

Three months later, I'm 155 lbs! But I hit the wall. The weight ain't dropping anymore (no change over past few weeks), and I still have a small beer belly. I actually don't care how much I weigh, I just want the beer belly gone. So I'm gonna keep dieting and exercising, but unless I eliminate alcohol, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever entirely lose my gut. And I ain't giving up alcohol.

The alcohol per se is not a problem, for weight loss anyway. It is processed in the liver and does not contribute to weight gain, unless you order a pizza because you are drunk. The issue is the things in alcohol, like carbs in beer. Beer is the worst. Wine has some carbs and is my vice, which doesn't help my weight loss, but fock it I like it. Hard liquors like vodka and whiskey have zero carbs, unless your get the flavored stuff.

I will never understand how eating healthy isn't considered a good thing for even skinnier people.

Anyway, I ate pizza 11 days in a row. I ate pizza a few times after that, like gorged myself. I attended a party and ate like a pig. All this in about a 3 week span, I didn't gain a pound because of how well I ate the rest of the time, plus exercise. This is just about experimenting. The breath thing does worry me a bit. We will see. I already know I am going to feel like shlt tomorrow from the carb binge of my nieces 1sr bday party today.

Are you even 30 yrs old? My son is 22 and eats fast food for practically every meal; he's got the body of a Calvin Klein model. He does jiu jitsu once or twice a week, that's it for exercise. Wait until you get older young Paduan, things change. :(

I am 35. I do not have a metabolism that allows me to eat whatever I want. I went down that road and was 18 pounds of pure fat heavier than I am now. I do know that my metabolism will only slow with time.

My post was more to show that losing weight isn't the only reason to try a diet, since I can stay the same weight and eat crappy already.

Yeah, I'm to the point where I'm sick of most of the options that are available out there and am going to buy a REAL Wok & spatula (said no one ever) cut up & store in the fridge lots of veggies & meat and make hot, fresh dishes. Sure there'll be some peanut oil and some sauce that's probably not healthy but it'll be far greater than grabbing a pizza. I also plan on finally getting rid of all the mismatched "Tupperware" around the house and buying a nice set that actually matches so I can pre cut & store lots of veggies for salads. If I don't prepare it ahead of time I'll never eat it. Now all of this I hope to do as the main source of meals, but I'll probably still eat junk from time to time.

FWIW I'll share this once again.About 15 years ago I weighed 281 and cholesterol and blood pressure were so bad my doc wanted me to go on a low fat diet.I had tried these before and hated them, low fat salad dressings etc. just disgusting.I had a friend and a ad client who had been dropping weight and found out they were both doing what they called at the time low carb.Anyhow, told my doc I was going to try that and he all but begged me NOT to try low carb. I went ahead with it though and within a month was feeling better(I'm sure some of this was because I was finally doing something and seeing some results) I had also started doing some light walking on the treadmill.

Six months from when I started I had lab work and had to see the doc and of course he asked what I was doing as I was now weighing 231.When I told him I was still doing low carb he was shocked and reported to me that my cholesterol and blood pressure were all but perfect and that this went against everything he was ever taught in med school. This is the reason I showed the trailer to the Magic Pill as the OP said the science on a high fat diet is unraveling and that documentary even shows numerous people all with different health issues that keto is helping.

Anyway I made it down to 199 lbs. in 10 months,of course this was years ago and I have fluctuated due to going back to bad eating habits but have always returned to low carb to lose weight and to feel better.Getting off the sugar alone makes me feel great let alone I eat real salad dressing with my salads not that low fat no fat crap,I also have pizza at least once a week I just now make my own on a low carb multi-grain tortilla and have numerous other meals that keep me satisfied. At present I am 231 lbs and starting day 7 of low carb, down 5.4 lbs in six days.

Here's a pic of my low carb cheeseburger pizza

My daughter is vegan. For a while that diet included a lot of chips and carbs that weren't terribly healthy. Then my wife started helping her food prep on Sundays. They lay out veggies on different cookie sheets, rub olive oil, salt, maybe balsamic vinegar depending on veggie, bake them, and bag them for the week. They make enough for her and the rest of us, and my wife uses them with dinner to make evenings easier. Everything from asparagus to green beans to cauliflower to pepper/onions (those they may saute) to mushrooms to whatever looks good at Costco or the grocery store.

The oil is key since it adds the fat; otherwise the veggies alone tend not to satiate you. Make sure it is extra virgin olive oil; anything else is (literally) garbage from the olives. Don't know about peanut oil.

Good luck.

Will this diet work for someone who was once tall and slender but morphed into an hourglass figure? Asking for a friend.

I should correct my post; they don't tend to "bag" them but rather use mostly Snapware, which is like Tupperware. She gets assorted sets at Costco; here is an Amazon link of a randomly chosen set:

I haven't been extremely strict with this way of eating yet, but I have gone a few days at a time following keto for a few weeks now. Things I have noticed

While my goal wasn't to lose weight, it melted off without me putting much effort in. I have eaten pizza a few times, drank alcohol, and gone off the diet for other reasons. I still lost about 5 pounds in about 3 weeks.

I do have more consistent energy throughout the day. It's pretty amazing really. After thinking I was eating healthy, I realized that I was still having energy crashes from carbs and energy deficits from a lack of calories. I was also low on sodium all the time which made my thirst unquenchable.

I am only eating twice a day, which cuts down on time I need to spend preparing food.

I am also starting to fast more. The fasting, again, is NOT for weight loss. There is a lot of research and logic that shows immense benefit to fasting.

On this plan I am eating Bacon, steak, sausage, fatty chicken thighs, and pretty much anything meat wise that I love to eat. I am planning a lot of my meals for the crock pot, which has made food prep such much quicker and simpler.

I hate cheese, which is actually a negative to this plan. If you love cheese though, you are able to eat a pretty good amount.

It is odd because people say this helps energy. And then you hear vegetarians say when they became one they had much more energy as well. 2 totally different diets.

I may try this for the hell of it just to experiment. But I generally find that energy for me is tied to quality of sleep and eating cleaner (none or less refined sugars. Tons of grease bogs me down as well)

You could feel even better. There shouldn't be much grease in a keto diet. It is a pretty clean diet that has us eat good fats. Things like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, flax seed, avocado, grass fed-hormone free animal fats.

If you aren't doing this for fat loss either, you may have a much easier transition. I havent had any issues besides craving pizza really.

I toyed with the idea of it. Didnt really research it that much but I was seeing where some people were saying it was bad for you especially long term. And that if you stop you gain the weight back immediately. Not sure how accurate that is as I havent looked into it that much. Pretty soon though Ill be altering my diet to include eating a ton of food because Ill be starting a really intensive workout regiment.

Well the main reason people quit a diet is because they cut too many calories. Cutting calories below what our body's should eat is a losing proposition. Eventually the cravings for calories will win out.

If someone is going to quit the diet and just eat like an assh0le, well yeah then of course they will become fatties again.

This diet is nice because you can eat things that taste great and are filling at the same time. When getting healthier, self control is required. If a person isn't willing to exact any self control, then they are doomed to be miserable fatties.

For people who don't need to lose weight, like me, it's pretty easy to follow the diet, enjoy things like pizza on certain days, and still get the benefits this plan provides.

There is nothing bad about this diet. Fat is a more efficient energy source that doesn't allow for insulin spikes. Healthy natural fats have far more benefits than we have been lead to believe.

Some people believe this diet is like Atkins, which it really isn't. Too much protein isnt good, but keto tells us to limit the amount of protein and to get the majority of calories from fat, which can be achieved without consuming excess proteins
