Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident in Florida early Sunday morning.
Fernandez was 24 years old.
The Marlins announced that Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves was canceled.
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time," the team said in a statement.
According to multiple reports, police received a call of a possible boating accident at 3 am ET. Authorities found a 30-foot boat overturned that had crashed into the rocks off Miami Beach. Three people were found dead and authorities were looking for survivors.
Fernandez's start had been pushed back from Sunday to Monday to make room for Adam Conley returning from the disabled list.

Not to diminish the tragedy, others apparently lost their lives too - but wtf was he doing out on a boat at 3 am?

Nothing good happens after midnight. That's the only thing Skip Bayless ever said that wasn't mindless dribble.

Maybe he was fleeing the Miami Marlins and trying to make a better life for himself in Cuba?

~sad story, :(

The Miami Herald reported that three people were found dead...

Not sure if the other names were released

From everything I have heard, he was a great guy. Teammates loved him. Defected from Cuba as a teenager on a boat. Big blow to the Miami community.

Story of his defection: http://grantland.com/features/marlins-rookie-pitcher-jose-fernandez-journey-cuban-defector-mlb-all-star/

Certainly will go down as one of the all time 'could have beens'.

Just take a look at his short career record at home: 29-2, 1.42 era, 346 k's in 272 innings, 0.918 whip.

Three found dead, all males in the ages of 24-27. Alcohol and drugs not indicated at this time. Speed was a factor. Victims were not wearing life vests.

253 Ks in 182.1 IP in the first year back from Tommy John. Talking about 300 K talent, Cy Young front-runner for seasons to come.

Wow. Mui stupidio!

Not much of a captain to hit a jetty.

This is something that could have easily been avoided with proper boater training. How tragic. :(

Buster Olney told a story this morning that while defecting, the boat captain announced a man overboard. Fernandez jumped in, swam 60 feet in choppy water and rescued the woman, not knowing until he got to her that it was his own mother. Wow.

Such sad news.

He actually had some unsuccessful attempts trying to land in Miami and ended up in a Cuban Prison. Eventually got to Mexico and then it was just a matter of taking a bus to US and the second he stepped on the ground he was legal (Cubans just need to step on US 'soil'). This story really details his journey:

I am out in my boat at 3:00 am multiple times a year.

There was another image but I am unable to link it. They had LED lights on inside the boat, that would make it next to impossible to see.

Are you traveling at high rates of speed, acting (presumably) like an idiot?

No he's puttering around on a lake getting ready to drop a line. Huge difference, obviously

I have a saltwater, offshore boat. My boat can top out at 50 mph, probably similar to what he hit the jetties at.

I boat around the jetties at dark, but at night time, in good conditions, around jetties I am familiar with i only go around 20 mph.
