Barry Trotz was hired as coach of the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Trotz resigned as coach of the Washington Capitals on Monday after leading them to their first Stanley Cup championship since they entered the NHL in 1974. They defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Final on June 7.

The 55-year-old replaces Doug Weight, who was fired June 5.

"Barry brings to the New York Islanders franchise a tremendous amount of knowledge, experience and success," Islanders president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "He is and has been one of the top coaches in the National Hockey League. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with him."

Trotz completed the final season of a four-year contract with Washington. The Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy in 2015-16 and 2016-17 but did not advance past the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Trotz was 205-89-34 with the Capitals and won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in 2015-16. Washington reached the playoffs in each of his four seasons and finished first in the Metropolitan Division the past three.

Trotz is fifth in NHL history with 762 wins, 20 behind former Islanders coach Al Arbour for fourth place. Trotz was 557-479-100 with 60 ties during 15 seasons with the Nashville Predators from 1998-2014.

The Islanders were 35-37-10 in Weight's only full season, finishing 17 points behind the New Jersey Devils for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference. New York allowed 296 goals, most in the NHL, and a League high 35.6 shots-against per game.

Weight took over for Jack Capuano on Jan. 17, 2017 and coached the Islanders to a 24-12-4 finish last season to miss the playoffs by one point.

The Capitals are the only NHL team without a coach.

How do you let a coach walk away to another team a few days after he wins you the Stanley Cup?

Money...

The Caps didn't want to pay him what he wanted...

Trotz reportedly agreed to a five-year deal worth double what he would have made annually on a shorter contract with the Capitals...

Trotz was underpaid in DC, now he's overpaid in NY. I love him, he brought a Championship, but he still carries some baggage as being a poor playoff coach.(outside of this season). Good luck to him.

He was not wanted. They almost let him go during the year but allowed him to finish out the season.

Not even winning the cup for the first time in team history was enough to satisfy ownership.

Hes a good dude. Was very well liked in Nashville.

I said this was going to happen weeks ago in NHL thread. Maybe just as Caps won cup. Maybe even before.

Beyond happy with this move. Islanders have not had a coach or a GM with a Stanley Cup ring since 1987.

Now they have both.

ETA June 8th I called it.
