$1.5 B lottery ticket still unclaimed

Recommended Posts

It was not immediately clear why the person has not come forward but the Washington Post offered some theories which included a lost ticket or the winner being overwhelmed by the large amount of money they would get.

The State offered another theory - the winner may not be in the state anymore. Joe Poore, a senior manager of the Elliot Davis accounting firm, told The State the winner may be holding back for tax reasons.

The purchaser lost or misplaced the ticket. It doesn't require interviews and deep thought to figure out why the ticket is unclaimed

Can't they track to when and where the ticket was purchased and go off of cameras after that?

Why would they?

If it hasn't been claimed within a pre announced time frame, roll the prize over to the next drawing.

I thought the money went to the states?

Honestly I'm not sure what happens

I would guess that certain stores could do this if they had security cameras. There is a time stamp on the ticket and the lottery commission knows which store sold the winner so if they contacted the store prior to that day being recorded over they would be able to at least narrow it down to a few people.

The lottery commission would love it if it doesn't get turned in on time.

The store owner must be so ticked off. They get a couple percent for selling the winning ticket, and Id imagine that would go poof too.

I would hope not. That's bull if the store doesn't get their cut just because the winner didn't do their part

What state was the winner located?

Time is running out for the winner of a $1.5 billion lottery jackpot to claim the prize, as a winning ticket sold in South Carolina in October remains unclaimed.

The potential billionaire has until late April to claim their prize. Otherwise, the money will return to the 44 states that hold Mega Millions lotteries.

Yup. Store owner is about the only one who gets jobbed in this case.

Can you imagine though, if there were two winners? Yeah, I guess the one guy who stepped forward would be happy for the money he won. But you know in the back of his head he be thinking the rest of his life, damn it! I could have had an extra $800,000!

Me and Bunny checked out a one of them their donkey shows a few weeks back. Beautiful girl. Of course, bunny hooked up with the performer.

Why?

You have to have openness in the lotto. After a while people will suspect nobody is actually winning.

If you want to win you should have to waive your right to privacy

How do we know it was legit?  When there is this much money involved, there has to be transparency...

And what Cdub said...

So all 44 states conspired to make up this anonymous winner and keep the money?

That would be quite an undertaking.

If I won, I'd wanna somehow insulate myself from everyone trying to get to me for a hand out.  I guess I could hire a team of people to deal with the requests, but coming forward immediately makes you a public figure.  That would be a lot to handle.

That is the risk you take IMO...  If you are playing a mega millions lottery and you win, you should know that you will be a public figure...

If you don't want the attention, don't play...

I disagree

My gambling winnings and/or losses are not part of the public domain.  Nor is my balance sheet

Money magazine says:

While we don’t know much else about the winner or why he or she waited so long to claim the jackpot, it seems like the big Mega Millions winner is approaching the life-changing situation wisely.

When the name of a big lottery jackpot winner gets released, that individual is often subject to endless requests for handouts and assistance from family, friends, and total strangers. Scammers, thieves, and even kidnappers could target lottery winners and their families as well. That’s why it’s wise to remain anonymous if you’re fortunate enough to win the lottery.

A recent court ruling in New Hampshire also agreed with a woman who sued for the right to remain anonymous.

There's not reason for any winner to have to be publically named... As far as a hoax, the people who believe talk about it at their Finding Bigfoot conventions.

Between the Feds and State and local authorities, there's plenty enuff checks and balances to make the payouts legit...... No concerns for me.

You're right, the government is always on the up and up and never does anything illegal or shady.

A true Democrat would be more likely to require the winner's name be disclosed. A true Republican would be more on the side of privacy.

In the real world things aren't black and white. To answer your question the government is both. The point is in a State run lottery like this you must have transparency. WTF do you think they put the drawing on TV (although that is easily faked too.) It's why when companies who are selected for government contracts are publicly listed.

I totally understand WHY these people want to stay anonymous hell if I won and had the option I too would want to stay anonymous. However, what I want and what is right are two different things. There are plenty of billionaires  Gates, Warren, Bezo, etc... And they seem to be just fine. If you don't want to become a public figure when you win 1.2B then don't play the lotto.

Bottom Line - I do not believe the lotto is corrupt. However, in order to keep it that way the government should be transparent as possible.

Sorry, but this is just starting to sound like conspiracy theory nutjob stuff.

If the 44 states that participated in the mega millions wanted to fake a winner, how many people would have to be in on it?  There would literally be thousands of elected officials and govt employees in on the scam.  Then, each winning lottery ticket retailer would need to be in on it.  That's thousands more people every year.  Has any single person ever come forward saying they were a part of this supposed scam?  And all these thousands of people and their closest family members and friends are somehow keeping mum on this without ever disagreeing and threatening to blow the whistle?

I believe there have been individuals within a lottery corp who've been accused of negligence and/or fraud, but has mega millions or powerball ever been investigated for faking winners to any degree?

Nobody's questioning that many politicians are corrupt, but this seems like an unrealistic endeavor even for the most sophisticated criminals.

Lets look at it from a different angle. If you are the lotto and you want to sell tickets one of the best way to sell tickets is putting a face to winners. Everyone knows it's a bazillion to 1 odds you'll actually win, but people play because it COULD be them. When there's no longer a face to a winner all people see is money goes in and they never win. It makes for a good news story to learn a bunch of blue collar people win or some family won. You know what doesn't make for a good story or help sell tickets? Anonymous South Carolina person won the lotto today.

It's not too much to ask for transparency.
