Watching The Departed

Recommended Posts

1. Excellent movie.

2. The first time I saw it I thought it was only ok and way too long. Wrong on both counts.

I've seen it many times. I never noticed that the "missing scumbag" was the guy DiCaprio's cousin had been to the funeral for. :dunno:

Was a great film. Thought it was an underrated Leo film. The deaths at the end were completely unexpected

I watched it on an airplane and thought it was meh, couldn't believe that it won Best Oscar. Maybe I'll try it again to see if it is as good as the recent recommendation here of Payback... wait, that sucked too. :(

Another kutulu repost for your reading pleasure...

I don't know about that, but the other night I went to see The Departed by myself (wife and kids out of town) at the 2nd run theater cost $1.99 a movie. So I say to self, "kutulu, you better get a bite to eat before the show." http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/banana.gif

Head over to KFC a few shops down the road. A few people ahead of me had big orders and I only order a $1.07 sandwich snacker. Well, everyone ended up waiting extra long for their food, but I actually didn't have to wait too long. Nonetheless, for my wait, they gave me 2 sandwich snackers, a order of coleslaw and a soda which I refilled on my way back to the movie. Course I was now stuffed.

I took myself to a movie and dinner for a grand total of $3.06. Needless to say, when I got home, I couldn't keep my hands off myself. http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/banana.gif http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/banana.gif http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/banana.gif

no, you can't have those 45 seconds back

I should probably watch it again. Saw it when it was in theatres and thought it was seriously overrated. But I could've been wrong

One of those movies that I will watch again when it comes on late night (Goodfellas, Caddyshack, Animal House, etc.) and I really enjoy it. That is, until the next morning when I wonder why I watch it when I know what happens. :dunno:

I highly recommend it.

BTW - some of the accents are horrible (Martin Sheen) but don't get thrown off. The story, connections and twists are worth it.

ETA - turning off the Celtics killing the Magic and looking for something to watch... and I find The Departed on. Going to watch now

I watched it for the first time on Pay Per View with the wife. She was shocked and cried when the killings occurred. I had told her at the beginning it was a Scorsese film and it won't play by the rules.

I watch it pretty much every time it's on.

Love this flick. As to the Oscar, it was a makeup. I mean the guy should have won for Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, or The Color of Money. Plus even though they are not considered among his classics Cape Fear, Gangs of New York and Casino were probably better than anything else released those years. So yeah, they owed him one and threw him a bone here.

Still, this exchange alone made it worthy.

"That's a natural diuretic. My girlfriend drinks it when she's on her period. You on your period?"

Mr. French "Hey! There are some guys you can hit and then there are guys you can't hit. Now that's not quite a guy you can't hit but it's almost a guy you can't hit. What did you want?"

Billy "A cranberry juice."

Mr. French "What? Are you on your period."

It was great, but the onslaught of these Boston based movies is chipping away at it. And Nicholson over acted, even for him.

Underrated? I thought this movie was labeled as an instant classic. I thought that was great but never felt like it wasn't getting enough credit.

No when it came out didn't hear much about it. Took a while for it to catch on with people. Hell I didn't even go see it in theaters because no one was talking about it. I happened to pick up from red box because my dad and I were wanting something to watch. Ended up loving it

Probably because you were 5 years old at the time

Not as good as Scorcese's best but still a great movie.

It's a remake of an Asian movie called Infernal Affairs. Terrible name but I've heard the original is great.

2006 called and said thanks for that tidbit.

Perhaps my problem was that with such a star-studded cast, it was very cliche and predictable. If I recall I felt like I knew what would happen early in the movie, and kept waiting to be wrong, but it followed a cliche plot the entire movie. :dunno:

How was Leo getting capped in the head on the elevator cliche? Movie was far from cliche

I'll watch it again; hopefully it will be better than Payback.

I saw Internal Affairs after hearing that tidbit. Don't remember it too much except that I thought it was easily as good or better than The Departed

I'll have to rent it. A lot of really good thrillers have come out of Hong Kong and Korea the past ten years or so. I thought The Departed was terrific and I'm surprised to see the negative response. I do agree with my stalker that too many movies are set in Boston these days.

I blame Ben Affleck.

This thread made me remember that from last week.

The Departed >>> Payback > John Wick

And I liked John Wick

I don't watch that many movies, but in the last week I saw John Wick and Gravity for the first time, The Departed, and I'm watching Interstellar for the first time right now. It's better than I thought it would be.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a scene in a movie more UN-predictable then the elevator scene

My memory is that I saw it coming at the time. Maybe I was on my 5th mini bottle of airplane hooch which is why I'm willing to give it another go. :dunno:

I recently read that Scorcese said he was mentally spent after this movie due to all the killings of the main characters.

great movie. it made me into a Leo fan when I never cared for him before.

I thought it was a great cast, with good moments - but not a great movie overall.

If I had to lend voice to my thought, I guess it lacked - cohesiveness.

And agree with whomever thought Sheen's Boston accent was absolutely horrible.

It's like Wahlburg said about filming Patriot Day. He and the Director would listen to

an actor (who had likely been working with a dialect coach for months) and, if they didn't

absolutely nail the accent, just told them to speak normally. - Because a bad Boston

accent is like nails on a chalkboard.

He said that the only non-Mass. actor that nailed it was John Goodman.

Same here. Wasn't a big Leo fan cause he was always doing those movies as the "pretty boy". But that movie made me a fan. Since then he started doing those gritty movies like shutter island and blood diamond

i dont know the chronology off the top of my head without looking but I think blood diamond was before. but i liked that so if anything, his performance in departed made me watch some more of his stuff and not just relate him to Titanic. I really enjoyed Inception which is coincidentally where my favorite actor, Tom Hardy, got his first true main stream recognition.

While I agree that Sheen had a terrible Boston accent, I think the movie was plenty cohesive. Perhaps it felt otherwise to some because there were so many big names (bog personalities) in the cast.

I do think what you're saying about Marky Mark is funny because I thought his acting was absolute dog shiit in departed and almost ruined the movie. He's one of those guys who has grown on me but just funny because even though he doesn't need a Boston accent, I thought his sounded poor in the movie as well.

Yup, Marty has at least 2 better movies and possibly 4 that would beranked higher. I put it in the very good category, but can understand people saying it's overrated, it won the Oscar but it's not an all time classic like Goodfellas & Raging Bull.

I have it behind Gangs of New York and in the tier with shutter Island and Taxi Driver, but ahead of Casino.
