“You are a member of the K.K.K.,” the fifth-grade homework assignment read. “Why do you think your treatment of African-Americans is justified?”
The work sheet, given on Thursday as part of a lesson on the Reconstruction period, caused an outcry after one student’s uncle, Tremain Cooper, posted a photo of the assignment on Facebook.
“This is my little 10-year-old nephew’s homework assignment today,” he wrote. “He’s home crying right now.”
Mr. Cooper identified the teacher as Kerri Roberts of Oak Pointe Elementary School in Irmo, S.C., a suburb of Columbia, and added, “How can she ask a 5th grader to justify the actions of the KKK???”

Reached by phone, Ms. Roberts’s husband said she was unavailable and was “not going to comment on anything.”
After Charlottesville, Black Republican Gives Trump a History Lesson on Racism SEPT. 13, 2017
Katrina Goggins, a spokeswoman for the Lexington-Richland School District Five, which includes Oak Pointe, said the teacher had been placed on administrative leave while an investigation proceeds. She did not clarify whether the leave was paid or unpaid, writing in an email, “This is an ongoing investigation and a personnel matter, so we are limited on the details we can/will provide.”
In a statement provided by Ms. Goggins, the school district said: “South Carolina standards for fifth grade require lessons on Reconstruction and discriminatory groups, including the K.K.K. We must teach the standard, but we are taking steps to ensure this particular assignment will never be used again in District Five schools.”
The work sheet was particularly explosive because of the political climate. Since President Trump was inaugurated, Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and other white supremacists have become more visible, openly expressing views that they feel have been legitimized. Last month, many of them marched through Charlottesville, Va., wielding torches, and a woman was killed the next day when a car plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters. Mr. Trump responded by blaming “both sides” for the violence, which many white supremacists took as a tacit endorsement.

The 10 year old wasn't crying. His adult relative said he was crying because that's sad and stuff.

When I was ten if the teacher did something that I thought dumb, I would give them the finger and get detention, not go home and cry. These kids are pvssies

Fine, but this isn't about the kids it's about the teacher.

Should ask drobeski, RP, KSB, et al. to explain -- I'm sure they can do a much better job than a fifth grader

You may get a real response from a 5th grader. A high schooler could not wrap their head around the question. A college student would run screaming to their safe space.

That's a dumb assignment by the teacher. This girl I know has a son in 5th grade and they are learning about the civil war today as well. During class one of the black kids turned around and said to her son (who is white) "YOU should know ALL about the KKK so why don't you tell us all about it" which hurt the kids feelings seeing as how he isn't racist and neither is his mom (she banged black dudes when I was in high school with her). So they both aren't racist. Teacher took the black kid outside and told him that was unacceptable but it makes you think what exactly that black kids parents are teaching him outside of school

I like the assignment. The teacher was crazy for thinking she wouldnt get crucified, but it has validity.

Learning how to think in another persons shoes is an incredibly valuable skill. As is defending a position you dont agree with.

And also, instead of KKK is just bad mkay? It asks students to do some thought into the issue.

A better way;

discuss what possible reasons/justifications racist hate groups like the KKK might feel they have for Mis treatment and discrimination of African Americans.

I agree with Titans. It's a valuable skill to have and a worthwhile exercise But the wording of the question was extremely poor.

Having said that, why did this have to go to social media? If you really do find this that disturbing, March your ass down to the school request an appointment and hash it out like adults. The lesson that's being taught to the 10 year old is not a good one by any means. Social media shouldn't be the Arbiter of all that is right or wrong in the world.

All the underclass fight with each other over worthless turf while the upperclass look

Down in amusement, safe and secure, and they decide who wins the pointless battle, but never the war
