which current bands will we still be talking about 20 from now

Recommended Posts

In the tradition of Zeppelin, The Stones, Kiss, Van Halen, GNR, ect... Which current bands have the best chance of reaching greatness and still be talked about 20 years from now? If any?

Foo Fighters

3 Doors Down

Nickleback

I could see Jack White still being relevant in some fashion. Maybe not doing the White Stripes or the Racontuers, but still putting out good tunes solo or some other collaboration..

Some ones off the top of my head:

Green Day

Radiohead

Beck

Dave Matthews' Band

Weezer

Ben Folds

Coldplay

Foo Fighters

White Stripes

I'm NOT a huge fan of all these bands, but I think they've done enough (or have made a distinctive enough mark) to be remembered 20 years from now...

Uhhh ... I was talking about the Peppers 20 years ago.

And I was listening to STP, never liked Green Day ... 15 years ago.

Foo who? Meh. It was better when it was called Nirvana ... 15 years ago.

20 years from now? Who knows.

Current bands? None I hope. Unless Tool and Velvet Revolver maintain their level for another 5-10 years, there isn't a single active act of significance in rock right now (Green Day I kind of leave out of this since they have been well-established for a decade plus already).

Tool and Velvet in the same sentence is wrong. Stop for a second and think about it dude.

Tool should be there.. another vote for The White Strips.

He's not a band, but he's the best artist and will be talked about 20 years from now...... Prince. The dude's damn near 50 and still puts out great music and he's still in demand.

Velvet is a matter of hoping against hope that they can make themselves a GnR/STP hybrid, and I think Contraband was a solid album. Not in the same league as Tool, but in the overall picture things are so pathetic that those are the only two I can even stand at this point.

As for Prince..its already BEEN 20 years, so I dont think he really fits in this topic.

Yep, he's one of the best guitarist of not only this generation, but all time. Santana has him ranked in his top 5 of all time.

Heartless Bastards (named from one of the incorrect answers from those bar trivia games...Tom Petty and the ?????)

Not well known, but Erika Wennerstrom, vocals, has this haunting quality. Check out some sound bytes from songs like

runnin

onions

piano song

gray

The song titles are crap, but the music is addictive.

When I first saw Purple Rain, I thought that someone else did the guitar, and that Prince faked it...

But the man can play :headbanger:

Yep, the dude can definitely play. On his Las Vegas concert DVD he replays Whole Lotta Love. If people didn't have respect for him, they need to watch him play that song. Unfockingbelieveable. He performed at the BET awards last week and they're replaying it Tuesday night. Amazing as usual.

:headbanger:

They are so lame.

Metallica and The Chile Peppers for sure.

Look out for Wolfmother too. It's a bit early in their career, but they have one hell of a unique sound. :pointstosky:

Maybe amongst your circle of friends, but the other 12 millon people that have purchased their last 3 albums might disagree with you. Six number 1 hits thus far in the US, multiple others in Canada. Songs in 5 movies. Yeah, they suck.

And before any of you people get all bent out of shape...the question was what bands would still be talked about in 20 years. Not what bands are critically bashed by music snobs.

i'm talking about bands that are still playing music today (minus stp because weilan sp? is awol). Also i don't personally think the foo fighters sound anything like nirvana... just because dave grohl was in both bands... he's also in queens of the stone age and was the drummer for tenacious D, but that doesn't mean they are nirvana.

so how current is current then?

i think most people on this board are right about 3 doors down and nickelback... it seems like every song they cut is a hit and played on the radio nonstop... probably why a lot of people tend to bash them.

i think you're right though... a lot of stuff today probably won't be remembered 20 years from now... and the stuff that will is the overplayed stuff now ie godsmack, staind, nickelback, and 3doors down. Maybe some "punk" bands will have staying power, like fallout boy or something. who knows... It's hard because RAP/hiphop has taken over.

a couple bands i'm rooting for would be audiovent and lit... never will happen

I kind of understand your thoughts.

Fallout Boy is not a bad call, but who knows. Throwing Godsmack and Staind under the bus, I disagree with. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? I can feel it all starting slipping. I think I'm breaking down. (love those lyrics)

There is a huge difference in the way people look at rock bands nowadays as compared to twenty or thirty years ago.

Currently, a band is either a top 40 radio success or they're an independent/hipster favorite. It's one or the other and a band can't be both. There are acts like Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket, or Built to Spill who have decent little followings, but they are hardly known today, let alone twenty years from now. If a band writes a little more "mainstream" music (like Nickleback or 3 Doors Down) they will be widely known and popular, but they are considered lame or "pop".

Bands like Van Halen or, going back even farther, The Stones or Beatles, were, both, critical favorites and top forty favorites. Those bands featured solid songwriting, good instrumentation, and hooks galore. If a band would come out today with the melodies (or hooks) that those classic bands had, the "cool hipsters" would immediately write them off as pop stars and sellouts.

It's kind of ironic (and sad) to think that the Beatles or Stones would be dismissed as crap if they came out today, because the music is too listener friendly.

Green Day

Dave Matthews' Band

White Stripes

I'll agree with those. And you definately should have put Chili Peppers at the top of that list. But the others you listed (Foo Fighters, Ben Folds, Weezer, Radiohead, Coldplay), I couldn't even name one of their songs today. Let alone in 20 years. Time will forget about those losers.

A few comments here:

- Sales now does not always translate into popularity in the future. I just dont see Nickelback's style being looked back on as relevant. I believe it will sound terribly dated and unoriginal.

- Many artists now who are indie may find themselves far more popular in 20 years. Death and time can bring great fame to artists...often more then they found in life. Jimi Hendrix, Nick Drake and Nirvana are clear examples of that. Fame is but a fruit tree, so very unsound. It's can never flourish, untill it's stock is in the ground. Often times the music of the true legends is just too ahead of its time or too off from the mainstream culture to receive attention in the moment, but will often transcend into future generations. I could really see Elliott Smith or Sufjan Stevens being viewed as rather significant in 20 years.

- Wolfmother's sound was very original...when it was called Led Zeppelin. Those guys are decent, but sound so much like LZ with some Jack White thrown in.

- I have to add RATM to the list. Morello might go down as the most influential guitar player of the generation.

There are very few rock stations left. In Philadelphia, we don't have a modern rock station at all.

So how are these bands going to have longetivity without air play?

I disagree a bit here. If the Beatles released Please Please Me today, then it would be written off...and rightfully so. While the music was fun and catchy, it was basically a bubble gum boy band. If the Beatles released Abbey Road today, then critics would love it and the general public would be completely oblivious to it's existance. The groundbreaking records the Beatles put out would not sell well today.

There are plenty of "hipsters" that enjoy pop music: The Shins, Brendan Benson, The New Pornographers,

It's not the same as far as wide spread exposure on a popular radio station or in heavy rotation on MTV(which is another problem as far as lack of videos shown).

It's more segmented and less populated.

I'm not a huge fan of all those bands; however, here's why I think they'll be remembered:

Foo Fighters--probably the most consistent "rock" bands of the past decade, have the Nirvana connection, are very good at producing music videos as well (which may factor into remembrance since some songs have become synonymous with their videos--i.e. Michael Jackson's Thriller, The Beastie Boys' Sabotage, etc.)...

Ben Folds--solid songwriter, excellent performer, has put together a string of very, very good albums, critical success, reminds me a little of a younger Elton John in his musicality (except, without the ghey thing or the flamboyance)...

Weezer--their older stuff is better but they are still probably the most influential "emo" band of all time, have inspired/influenced a whole generation of musicians and have left an indelible mark on various genres, including rock/punk/emo/accoustic/etc...

Radiohead--solid commercial success and huge critical success, released a couple of the most highly-respected albums in the past decade or so with OK Computer and Kid A (although I, personally, like The Bends more than either of those albums), will likely be remembered as an influential (albeit peculiar) band...

Coldplay--I am by no means a rabid Coldplay fan (personally, I think nearly all their songs sound the exact same); however, they are a huge critical AND commercial success thus far, and if they can parlay that into a couple more good albums, they very well may be the most memorable band on this list (unfortunately)...

And yes...totally forgot about the Chili Peppers but they should be on the list as well...
