92 y/o woman shot and killed her son, in order to avoid being sent into a care home

Recommended Posts

Anna Mae Blessing, who is charged with murder, contemplated her son's intentions to put her into care for days, according to court documents.
"You took my life, so I'm taking yours," she reportedly said as she was escorted out of the Arizona home she shared with her son and his girlfriend.
Mrs Blessing told police she had intended to kill herself, too.
The incident happened in the morning of 2 July in the town of Fountain Hills, Maricopa county, police records obtained by local media say.
Mrs Blessing's son, whose name has not been released, wanted her to leave for an assisted living facility because she "had become difficult to live with".
The mother concealed two firearms in her robe pockets before confronting her son in his bedroom, police said in a statement.
During the ensuing argument, she pulled out one revolver, purchased in the 1970s, and fired at her son.
Police found the son dead, with two bullet wounds to his neck and jaw.
Mrs Blessing then pointed the gun at her son's 57-year-old girlfriend, who managed to wrestle it away and throw it into a corner of the room.
She pulled out a second pistol, which she told police her late husband had given to her in the 1970s.
The girlfriend managed to knock this one out of Mrs Blessing's hands, too, before escaping and calling the sheriff's office.
Police found Mrs Blessing in a reclining chair in her bedroom. She later told them she deserved to be "put to sleep" for her actions.
She is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping, and her bail was set at $500,000.

She seems fully capable to me, why was her son trying to bring her to a nursing home? I kind of understand this. She was being brought somewhere AGAINST her will and fought back the only way she knew how.

Unless my parents could not walk and needed 24/7 medical care I could never put them in a nursing home. Children that do that to their parents are the lowest of the low. Especially the ones that have the funds to take care of them.

If I was a healthy 92 year old and I knew it in my head and someone was trying to take me from my home I would probably blast them too.

That is possible. But being a shitty mom isn't a crime and my point remains. My mom could be as shitty as she wants. I'm not dropping her off at a nursing home.

You say that now after your mom, I assume, was a good mom and tolerable to live with. Some moms are absolutely intolerable and bat shlt crazy. The fact that she was able to kill her son tells you she already had the bat shlt crazy part checked

Okay fair enough. Some parents suck.

But lets go to her POV. If you were fully healthy and someone was trying to rip you from your home at the end of your life, I can kind of see why she did what she did.

MOST, that is. My dad golfed from the white tees at 90. At 92, when we played red-white-blue and he drew the blue chip, he hit from the blue tees just like everyone else. Of course, his playing partner can drive the ball 300 yards so it didn't matter what chip he drew.

I plan on doing the same. It's genetics.

By spunky, do you mean you would fill her with spunk?

As usual, 90s doesn't sound like he has a clue. We don't know the story. But if this woman was unable to cook for herself, shop for herself, toilet for herself, shower, manage her meds, Etc at a certain point, it becomes crueler to keep them in the home.

So let's assume that she is the spunky, healthy, old broad type. State laws are such these days that if an old broad can order off a menu, she's declared fit to care for herself. It's actually very cruel. You can't just forcibly check somebody into a nursing home. It doesn't work that way. There are intake interviews and needs assessments, Etc.

Virtually every major city and suburb has at least some resources for advocacy for seniors. She could have availed herself to that. If she had mentioned any of this and her strong opposition at the nursing facility, they would have been legally compelled to bring in outside services to do a mandatory evaluation.

The assisted care facilities have pretty strong motivation to do so. If they don't? They are complicit in kidnapping and illegal detention.

So, either an entire system was complicit in putting granny in a cruel old nursing box. Or, granny was suffering from Major League dementia and had violent tendencies. Which means she probably also had abusive Tendencies as well. Again, the murder Is Res ipsa.

That transition is incredibly difficult in the best of circumstances.

End of the day, it would be a lot like one of the parents trying to take Adam Lanza to a mental health facility for long-term treatment. And Lanza shoots mom to death in her bed before going to Sandy Hook.

Have you ever taken care of someone who is debilitated? Even if they dont require 24/7 care it is really tough.

And few people have the financial resources to pay for 24 hour caregivers. Everyone should strongly consider long term care insurance. Especially if you have kids.
