cyclone24 1,814 Posted August 17, 2018 So I get a call yesterday from a debt collector wanting me to pay a $106 speeding ticket from 1995 in Colorado. Didn't know anything about it. I mean it probably occurred. I was living there at the time. Do I actually pay this or just tell them that I paid it and they're incorrect? It was 23 years ago.
tanatastic 2,061 Posted August 17, 2018 Whoa, if that’s legit I’m impressed. Probably a scam though, I’d disregard it.

wiffleball 4,639 Posted August 17, 2018 Tell him to go himself. But if you want to be extra anal retentive about it, call the respective jurisdiction and see if there's an outstanding warrant. But if you're never going back to Colorado don't worry about it. Either way, pretty sure 23 years has run well past the statute.

frank 2,144 Posted August 17, 2018 I don't think a state would turn it over to a debt collector.
wiffleball 4,639 Posted August 17, 2018 I can't link it, just Google does Colorado have a statute of limitations on moving vehicle citations? You get about 20 direct hits.
Gladiators 1,904 Posted August 17, 2018 Does the cop who pulled you over have to show up if you fight it? Not that it would be worth driving or flying there for a $106 ticket, but it would be focking great if you did...assuming the original cop actually has to show up.

frank 2,144 Posted August 17, 2018 Statute of limitations isn't an issue you dinks. If this is real, he was charged at the time.

But do the Google search that I recommended. You'll see it's use pretty universally. It's not so much a statute on the offense itself as it is a statute on the failure to pay for the offense. I don't think debt collectors can turn you in to the authorities, so I'd probably let it ride. Can you look up the case # on-line? Also, this sounds fishy as CO and IA are members of this: The Non-Resident Violator Compact requires member states to suspend the driver's license of those who get traffic tickets for moving violations in other states and fail to pay them or otherwise legally take care of them. It does not apply to vehicle registration or parking citations.

I mean trying to think back I feel like this was probably valid. I think I left and came back to Iowa shortly after this. Sounds like something back then I would have let slide and just said screw them.

Cloaca du jour 2,064 Posted August 18, 2018 Companies buy up debt like that for pennies on the dollar and try to collect. If 20% pay they make money
RaiderHaters Revenge 3,579 Posted August 18, 2018 no if it was actually turned into a failure to appear, your state DMV would know. How do I know? California blocked my renewal from a speeding ticket in Vegas 15 years earlier
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted August 18, 2018 Companies buy up debt like that for pennies on the dollar and try to collect. If 20% pay they make money Yep. Thats what I did coming out of law school. Worked for my dad, who did this. Hed buy debt for 4 cents on the dollar off the internet, grease it up with years of vig, slap a 1/3 attorneys fee on it, and sue the hell out of people. We had zero proof usually. All we got was a spreadsheet of names, ssn, and balances. It was a big game of bluff poker. Id go to court, and bluster my way into as much payment as a could. Sh!tty job.
