The Gronk

Recommended Posts

I'm down on Gronk, I drafted him 2nd. round, and his numbers suck. I do not get their games in WI, so I am going on stat line only. Sounds like they have been keeping him back to block and protect. I thought that with Hernandez out he would pick it up, but they really play different positions even though they are TE's. Maybe having Hernandez back will help him? I'd like to trade him but I don't think he has much value right now, other than name recognition... Do any Patriot homers have any insight on what has been going on?

I think Gronk is is own worst enemy right now, and needs to refocus his life and decide how important football is to him, or is partying more important, once he decides how he is going to carry himself he will be just fine; I hope.

He's on pace for 950 yards and 8 TDs. This "sucks" for a TE? He's TE4, and because of some O-line issues, he's had to block more. As the O-line sorts itself out, he should improve slightly. Top-5 TE, with a good chance of being THE top TE.

If you drafted him expecting numbers like last year, you drafted him based on foolish expectations. Especially with McDaniels coming to NE. He's made it abundantly clear throughout his career that he doesn't utilize the TE much; and (Note-the following thought is strictly my opinion) he thinks he's smarter than he is, so he tries to "out-smart" the opposing D (by not using Gronk/Welker-before the Hernandez injury because they would expect him to).

Well that's a great point, except there were MANY more reports of him partying last year when he put up THE BEST season by a TE ever. There have been very few (none?) reports of him partying during the season this year.

Maybe he should start partying more. he is what, 22, 23? Rich, tall, white? It can only go downhill for him.

He's too talented and physically gifted to be used as a primary blocker.

He's going to have some BIG games which will distant himself from the pack.

I should clarify, his numbers suck for his draft position - he went in the 1st and 2nd rounds of probably 99% of the drafts out there. When I drafted him in the second round I did not expect a repeat of last years freak numbers, but I expected more consistent production week to week.

He started out fine, but his trend is downward. His stats the last 4 weeks: WK3=2-21-0, WK4=5-104-1, WK5=4-35-0, WK6=6-61-0. - 1 TD in 4 Weeks for Gronk is down to say the least.

I'd like to trade Gronk for a decent receiver, just not sure what I could get - Tier 2 guy??

Three reasons for the inconsistent production:

1. He is dinged up. His back/hip have been giving him problems for several weeks now and I would expect that to continue this week since he took a big shot to the back early in the game

2. The offensive line has been having some problems with pass protection. When Brady gets hit early in the game, the Pats adjust by keeping Gronk in to block since he is like another offensive lineman

3. Redzone offense - they are only middle of the pack (14th) in red zone TD efficiency. Last year, they were 4th.

I saw a stat of which I really hate I cannot remember where it was or I would link it. But the stat was for TE's and what percentage of plays they stay in to block as opposed to run pass catching routes. Gronk was tied for first in the entire league (of TE's) with Brent Celek at around 22%.

Every other TE was around 10%. Jimmy Graham was like 7% of snaps he played he stayed back to block.

If he went in the 1st/2nd rounds, then he was drafted with the unrealistic expectations (basically of repeating or coming close to last year's #s). He is doing fine for a TE. His numbers last year were great, FOR A WR. Those who drafted him in the 1st/2nd round were expecting an unrealistic return on their draft pick.

In my Yahoo league (1 pt. ppr), he was number 3 in FP overall for WR's and TE's combined last year. This year he was projected to be in the TOP 10 total scoring of WR's and TE's in my same league. I would say that warrants him a 2nd round draft pick with realistic expectations.

My guess is that Gronk went in the 1st-2nd. rounds in 99% of all Fantasy Football leagues out there - PPR or standard. Are you saying he should have went in the 3rd round? Well, to each his own I guess...

What I'm saying (and you've confirmed with what I bolded) is that you used projections that were unrealistic.

He should NOT have been projected in the top 10 WRs. In order for him to finish like that, he would have had to put up another season that is above and beyond what should be expected from a TE. With McDaniels returning & the introduction of Lloyd, there was ABSOLUTELY no reason to expect him to have that kind of season again.

One of the benefits of doing your own analysis and projections is that you don't always get caught up in the "group-think" of yahoo/espn/FF mag projections.

Seems to be a bit premature to think he won't finish as a top 10 WR.

If the yards aren't there, the TD will. All it takes is a stretch (2-4) games where he goes bonkers.

You know it's going to come.

Last year was a perfect example of that.

Started out with record pace:

14.6

20.6

25.9

Then tailed off (this was the stretch when A. Hernandez was hurt)

1.5

3.1

7.4

0 - bye

9.4

That's 11.4 points per game after 7 games.

The next 6 games which really defined his record season (Hernandez was back):

19.1

26.3

21.6

11.9

24.6

35

And finished the season with the following 2 games:

5.3

7.8

I don't expect him to come close to last season's numbers, but by season's end he'll be the number 1 TE again because he's an elite red zone target. The Pats know full well that in order for them to advance in the playoffs, Gronk has to be a major factor. They're not going to let the sleeping giants simply sleep all season.

dude just offered me leshoure, black unicorn and stevie johnson for the gronk...

My starting rb situation is muddy at best, with CJBust and SJAX as starters, and Michael Bush, Ben tate and Hillis on the bench. All worthless unless their lead back goes down, in which case they're serious starting rb calibur guys. WR wise stevie is worthless to me, I've got Marshall, Maclin and Dbowe. I've turned it down but the more I think about it, the more it's not a slam dunk. But what do I do with leshoure, start him over one of my other 2 guys? Looks like Sjax is being faded out and the rook is coming on strong.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'm still very high on Gronk, but the vibe of that offense is not the same as last year, and they haven't been nearly as productive as last year either...

Gronk has been blocking a lot, and even when they do send him out there he has not looked uncoverable like last year. Not sure if teams have figured out how to defend him better or what. I think he'all have a few big games here and there but overall his production will not be as good or as consistent as last year.

The pats are #1 in the league in yards and points scored, and are four points away from being undefeated... They'll be fine.

I didn't read all this, but I'm assuming someone has mentioned that he's been nursing a lingering hip injury?

I'm down on Gronk, I drafted him 2nd. round

It might make you feel better to mock that fool in your league who drafted Jimmy Graham even earlier than you drafted Gronk.

what i'm wondering is if it's time to sell welker very high on the chance his production will go down a bit with gronk and hernandez both playing, and right now welker's value has never been higher this season.

it's a very small wonder, as 90% of me says keeping welker is the way to go, the dude is just going to where he went last season, leading the league in receptions. but since i have white and colston and moore, who knows. can get a ###### ton for welker probably.

You have that right... Now if Graham was not injured, he is money in the bank, but that's obvious.
