We have a baby snapping turtle as a pet

Recommended Posts

I know. Odd pet. However I have a long term policy of helping turtles across the road. Over the years I have helped hundreds.

My 4 year old and I came across this tiny ass snapping turtle and have had him for 2 months. Tried crickets, fish, store bought turtle food. No go. The thing won't eat any of it.

I have a spot where we can catch massive crawfish. Like 4 to 6 inches no joke. We also found a lot of small ones. Like the size of your fingernail. Took them home and the turtle feasted.

I know. Rats ass. But the boy is happy.

Haha, cool story. I use to catch turtles every summer and go to turtle races, I've even got Turtle Race Trophies. Fun times.

First thing first. Snapping turtles are one the most dangerous animals in the swamp. Not poisonous but very aggressive. They don't play. Even the small ones.

Second, They hate humans. They hate!

Yep. Four year-old fingers are delicious too. :music_guitarred:

When i say baby. I mean like the size of a 50 cent piece. The boy handles him fine.

Make sure you wash his fingers while he's got them all, as turtles also carry salmonella.

Is that like polishing the bishop?

almost. Both serve their purpose. Pretty sure the turtle dislikes it though.

The best is the alligator snapping turtles. The dinosaur looking ones. Incredibly dangerous.

I saw this documentary once where they eat pizza.

Apparently they love the stuff.

Was on a swamp tour in an area where they film those alligator hunters a few years ago. Air boat ride that brought you in the swamps where all the dangerous gawkers live. Tour guide brought us this 100 year old snapping turtle just sitting on the bank. Took a broken heavy rake handle and started shoving it in his mouth. Fawker bit it in two like nothing. Snap!!! And then we fed it marshmallows. Wild.

We had a couple family reunions on a lake in Minnesota. I was a little too old (read: too cool) to participate in the turtle races but I specifically remember my little brother going apesh!t because our little sister's 3 legged turtle won the turtle race at the county fair and his didn't even place.

Careful, I've read that baby snapping turtles are highly correlated with snapping turtles. :shocking:
