White supremacist movement in US

Recommended Posts

A small but determined political organization in Detroit began to worry that its official symbol was a bit off-putting. With the groups central philosophy suddenly finding traction in the daily discourse, appearances mattered.

So in November, as the countrys divisive presidential campaign became ever more jagged, the National Socialist Movement, a leading neo-Nazi group, did away with its swastika. In its stead, the group chose a symbol from a pre-Roman alphabet that was also adopted by the Nazis.

According to Jeff Schoep, the movements leader, the decision to dispense with the swastika was an attempt to become more integrated and more mainstream.

Let us pause. Not even two years ago, white supremacists like Mr. Schoep would rant from the fringe of the fringe, their attention-desperate events rarely worth mention. Today, though, the Schoeps of America are undergoing a rebranding, as part of the so-called alt-right: a grab bag of far-right groups generally united by the belief that white identity has become endangered in what they deride as this era of dangerous diversity and political correctness.

The deceptively benign phrase alt-right now peppers the national conversation, often in ways that play down its fundamental beliefs, which have long been considered intolerant and hateful. The terms recent prevalence corresponds with the rise of President-elect Donald J. Trump; alt-right leaders say his inflammatory statements and Twitter habits in the campaign energized, even validated, their movement.

The movement is also acutely image-conscious, seeing the burning crosses, swastikas and language of yesteryear as impediments to recruitment. Its adherents talk of getting red-pilled, a reference to the movie The Matrix, in which the protagonist ingests a tablet that melts away artifice to reveal the truth. New, coded slurs have emerged. Fewer pointed hoods, more khaki pants.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Yes, Jerry, I'm looking at you. Amongst many others here

Wife and I were discussing this the other day. I think every day white folks who didn't give a sh!t about race were forced to do so the last 8 years.

They were mocked, blamed, ridiculed, targeted, belittled, etc, not only by the news media, but the entertainment industry jumped on board as well. If you said something to stick up for yourself or your beliefs, you were automatically a racist or a bigot.

Just like peoples of color, white folks who are apparently inherently "priveledged" (most white people arn't rich btw) got fockin sick of being torn down every day.

I think the BLM, our President making the police the blame for any race related incident, and the constant media ridicule for being white did the exact opposite all these movements maybe initially had good intentions for.

People will only take so much. Just like people of color are proud of their heretige, I know many nordic, irish, scottish, etc who are proud of where their people come from and are tired of being treated differently or blamed for some sh!t they had zero to do with because of the color of their skin.

The political correct movement really pushed a lot of folks that didn't care either way, into caring because they've felt attacked or threatened the last several years.

In the last 8 years they've been the most descriminated people in this country.

I understand how some people feel this way and I do agree that Obama got too involved in this stuff. The cops have been too widely maligned and organizations like BLM went too far.

Sure hope you aren't attempting to rationalize white supremacy though. The neo nazis and other "alt-right" folk discusses in the article are NOT the answer

Cummon man, of course I'm not justifying hate groups.

Just attempting a discourse on how I think its possible in this day and age those redic groups can even be still around.

How the BLM etc are pushing people to revolt in the extreme opposite.

So if you're black, you should worry more about white supremacists than your own kind. If you're gay or anyone else you should worry more about white supremacists than Islamic terrorists. The numbers don't add up. Talk about deflection

so white america voted for Obama convincingly the last two elections, is now racist cause it voted for the white guy over the white ######...got it.

the same white america would have voted for Obama again in a landslide if it was possible

can't it just be that we didn't like Hillary on top of the fact we are tired of the same

I'm hopeful and looking forward to 4 years where race is not as much an issue as it has been the last 8. As with anything, time will tell, but under Obama it seems that race relations in this country are worse than I remember in my lifetime.

The left refuses to take a look in the mirror, it's always somebody else's fault.

Agree. I'm sick and tired of social issues being front and center in this country.

Voter intimidation, protests with violence and property damage, constant interruptions during political rallies, spreading false narratives leading to race baiting riots, demanding separation of races on college campuses. All things during the last 8 yrs by white supr....oops I mean black lives matters. Yep, seems the white supremacy groups are the people we need to be worried about.

These groups have always been around. But lately they've gained a lot of momentum and have gone mainstream. That's what the article is about, how white supremacists are rebranding themselves as the supposedly more benign "alt right."

As for why they've gained momentum, I think you have a point. Obummer, Holder etc. pushed too hard and sparked a real backlash. Then that got fed with some of the fake outrage stories like Colin kaepernick (nobody cares) and BLM (what have they ever really done? Nothing). Although the "police brutality" thing has had a real effect and justifiably sparked pushback.

Obviously there's an underlying revolt against globalization going on as well which has unfortunately manifested itself as ethnic nationalism. We're seeing that in Europe as well.

It's a dark time. I just hope we come out of it in one piece

Hillary was a sucky candidate, without a doubt. But you also can't deny the rise of white nationalism: it's everywhere and Trump has been fanning the flames for years going back to the Birther nonsense.

The left is in a flat out sprint to irrelevancy.

Who said anything about "us" losing anything?

The election is OVER. Your guy won. Funny that the only people who can't get passed that are the supposed "winners." Jesus.

The disconnect appears you don't understand what white nationalism means and why its dangerous.

Their whole defense of everything appears to be making things up that people aren't saying.

They excuse Russians involved in the election...instead they claim people are just blaming Hillary losing on that.

None of it matters...they are so focking blind its sort of funny.

Oh I understand what it means. I also understand liberals are trying to change it to attack white people. Here you go

na·tion·al·ism
ˈnaSH(ə)nəˌlizəm/
noun
  1. patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.
synonyms: patriotism, patriotic sentiment, flag-waving, xenophobia, chauvinism, jingoism
    "their extreme nationalism was frightening"
    • an extreme form of this, especially marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.
      plural noun: nationalisms
    • advocacy of political independence for a particular country.

Lets see here I'm white

I have patriotic feelings

I think America is the best country in the world and superior to other countries

I think America should continue our independence from the globalization efforts.
