PARADISE (KRON) - The death toll in the massive Camp Fire burning in Butte County has increased to 71, officials said on Friday night.

About 1,011 people are still missing in the Butte County wildfire and over 12,000 structures have been destroyed.

Jesus....and they think all those numbers will increase? Good god, this is like a hurricane or something in the form of fire, just insane

Calling all the Keynsians....

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/nov/16/california-private-firefighters-wildfires-celebrities

In an article published last spring, NBC highlighted that the insurance giant AIG offers wealthy homeowners access to their Wildfire Protection Unit, certified through authorities to respond to fires that threaten million-dollar homes.

TMZ reported this week that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West hired private firefighters to protect their $50m mansion in the hills of Calabasas. It narrowly survived the fire, but critics began wondering if the destruction-fueled “new normal” meant the affluent, yet again, could save themselves while others suffered.

Interesting. Maybe instead of worrying about straws and catering to illegals they figure out a way not to have their state perpetually on fire 365 days a year.

Controlled burns and maintained fire lanes woul be a common sense approach to avoid fire disasters.

I can see Californians being opposed to these practices to save lizards, toads and insects.

That fire is 150 miles away and there is so much much smoke here you'd think the fire was 150 feet away. It's ridiculous. Air quality around the entire Bay Area is the worst in the world right now.

California Bullet Train Audit: Expect More Cost Overruns

Elaine] Howle suggested that much of the spending so far may have been an outright waste….The audit, ordered by the Legislature this year, found extensive mismanagement, including serious problems tracking contracts, reviewing invoices for payment and monitoring construction progress….The project is 13 years behind the schedule set in the bond act approved by voters in 2008 and has grown in cost by $44 billion over its original $33-billion price target.

The school district I work for finally closed schools yesterday. They were among a couple districts holding out and making people angry.

AQI wise, Beijing and Shanghai were in the high teens one morning, New Delhi and 4 other cities ahead of them but all under 50. Sac was at 239. Since that morning it has spent some time hanging out as high as the 420s which is well into the hazardous range.

I-5 in Sac at 3:30 PM on Thursday

That said, I'm one of the people who can't lament the air quality too much without thinking about the reason for it, and the grisly loss to Paradise. My brother found a picture of our totally flattened grandparents old house on the structure status map which is interesting to look at even if you don't have a specific place in mind.

I think the victim toll is probably going to go over 100 but sure as heck hope it stays south of 150. The Sheriff keeps emphasizing to the media that the list is imperfect, and there's likely duplicates on it (people reporting someone missing and spelling the name differently). He is asking journalists to make sure they give it proper context. In the chaotic first hours of the event they logged an incredible amount of 911 calls and they're going over the details of those calls, referencing it to people reported missing and that is adding people to the list. People are also being taken off in high numbers, it's just that additions in high numbers were made as they combed over the calls.

All residents who safely evacuated need to make sure they're not on the list, but apparently many people are wrapped up in just getting by in whatever setting they're in now and not aware of the media regarding the list. I'm assuming personnel have gone through the shelters expressly for that purpose.

Recovery teams have gone into the heart of the town when there's strong reason to believe remains are at a certain address. But the second tier of priority is the door to door search and they are still outside the town on that mission.

Carmel is south enough from the Bay Area that it's not a trip ruiner by any means. Recent AQI figures across the state (Monterey is close to Carmel)

Tonight and tomorrow morning bring challenging winds for the Camp Fire (Northern CA) firefight. 55% contained. Blowing up again would make it encroach on other populated areas so hopefully the winds aren't that vigorous.

I heard pretty much every school in the bay area is closed. Not sure it matters much. It isn't like the air at home is any better.

As far as Paradise is concerned, yeah it's a tragedy. An entire town burned to the ground. Homes and businesses gone. The death toll is unbelievable. I know a couple of people that lived there. Hope they made it out alive.

Carmel is far enough away and on the coast so the air quality there should be fine. No need to cancel any TG plans.

ETA: There's another fire going in the Santa Cruz area, well north of Carmel. Looks to be 50% contained at this point. Shouldn't be an issue.

I perhaps wouldn't compare Finland and California climate-wise... And besides, 80% of the country is classified as forest land. We don't exactly manicure all of it.

But Sauli Niinisto told the Ilta-Sanomat newspaper raking had not come up when they talked.

"I mentioned [to] him that Finland is a land covered by forests and we also have a good monitoring system and network," he said.

The forestry director of the Finnish Forest Association, Heikki Savolainen, told the newspaper that raking was not usually a forest-management measure.

"Those statements were very interesting. I see raking only in my own yard. It belongs to yards and parks," he said.

Is Trump right about California wildfires?

The day Paradise burned down

Finns have been posting pictures of themselves online raking local forests, joking about "raking America great again".

:D

He's kinda right. Not about raking though.

There is a huge problem with mismanagement of fire prone areas in this state. A healthy forest has around 40-60 trees per acre. Some areas in California have upwards of 200 trees per acre. It's unsustainable. There isn't enough water to keep all those trees healthy so they die. When they die, they're left to rot because to remove them would disrupt the habitat of the three legged tree slug.

The forestry service is run by tree huggers with bad ideas about forest management. They need to thin the forest of live trees and clean up dead and decaying plant matter on the forest floor. Aka fuel.

Wiff I know you got TDS and all, but California along with PG&E passed a bill that would create 25,000 jobs in forestry and fire prevention, it passed all the way up, and Jerry Moonbeam Brown vetoed it. There is over 29,000,000 dead trees in the Sierra Nevada forests alone, these fires are ALL on Jerry Brown

that is a shitton of fuel

JFC, you guys are fuucking clowns. Trump read you right. Now you would rather argue that he is a forest fighting expert than just concede he said something stupid and should have just kept his mouth shut?

I'm sorry, I'm more inclined to believe what I read below:

------------

... But the reality is, to manage every little bit of fuel with a rake is not practical.

Raking is an effective way to clear light debris like leaves and pine needles away from residences, she said. Its of much less use on the forest floor, where infernos burn through swaths of where infernos burn through swaths of brush and other heavy fuels that only heavy machinery can clear.

------------

Temperatures in Finland, part of which lies within the Arctic Circle, can drop below minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Even in August, the temperature is usually in the mid-60s.

The incendiary risk is therefore much lower for most of the year in Finland than in California

nd frequent wind make wildfires far more likely.

Its not a good comparison, Mr. Ruuska said. We have a half-meter of snow during winter, so its quite natural that we dont have any fires over the winter, and our autumn is quite wet.

Also, Finnish forests are mainly filled with tall boreal trees pine, spruce and birch whereas much of Californian vegetation consists of lower-lying chaparral shrub land and small trees, which are more prone to catching fire.

"The whole comparison is a bit crazy" he said.

Trump is eloquently referring to fire management principals. Reduction of fuels and containment avenues.

Jeez.

The fact that you think Trump says or does anything eloquently invalidates anything you might think. About pretty much anything come to think of it.

Wiff you ###### idiot, there have been discussions about it in California for the last 30 years

Jerry Brown single handedly said NO

No Raking? Lol

my favorite part is Trump felt the need to lie about the source for his stupid idea. Ever notice he always does that? At least this time he didn't say "a lot of people are saying..."

Of course the downside is, the one time that he was actually specific, the guy he cited said Trump was full of shiit. LOL

Can't wait for the next earthquake where in Trump tells us that a lot of people are saying that they should have just duct taped everything down and this wouldn't have happened. 😁
