I am pretty much a novice at playing week to week. I usually just play leagues that have a winner that last all season. So, when I have a budget, I find myself struggling big time to set a lineup with that.

Case in point- this past week. The winner got $40,000 scoring 184 points. I scored 106 points and won nothing for my efforts. Here was my lineup for week 1:

Wilson
Bell, Miller, Jennings
ABrown, Fuller, Parker
James
NYG

The top guy had this lineup:
Rodgers
Bell, Rawls
Cobb, Adams, Hopkins, Shephard
Cook
Pitt

Now, as you can see, I used up all of my $200 on my players and I had some not so reliable players like James, Fuller, Parker, Jennings in order to cut costs.

The top dog looks like he didn't have much cost savers save Cook and possibly Shephard.

My question: They don't show the dollar amounts but I can't imagine this guy paid under $200 with his players but I'm sure he did.

So, what is the BEST strategy when playing within a budget? Any help would be deeply appreciated. I don't mind winning 40k either. If I do because of your particular help, I will send you a cut for you kindness.

You could argue that the winner had cost savers at WR as he didn't use any of the top three - Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham, or Jordy Nelson.

I didn't save the Yahoo prices but when I plug in his lineup using last week's FanDuel prices, he comes in slightly over budget - $60,700 vs the $60,000 cap. FanDuel is a little different in that they feature a kicker spot instead of  Yahoo's flex spot (so i plugged Shepard into the kicker slot) but I would guess that his lineup came very close to the Yahoo $200 cap.

One thing that the winner did was to skew his lineup towards a big bet that the Packer passing game would find success. He fielded not only Rodgers but also three GB pass catchers. That carried some risk considering how well the NYG defense has been doing lately. Note also that he chose to have minimal exposure to the Steelers passing game - risky because one would figure that PIT would have an easier time throwing against MIA than GB would against NYG.

The thing I love about DFS is that I'm not limited to the players I drafted and/or scooped from the wire - the entire field is available to me. I hope you come to savor this freedom too as you approach next week's games. Go over your stats and identify the latest trends, read some gurus and incorporate those insights which click with you, and then go in the tank and do some soul-searching and ask where this week's leverage is gonna be.. The Yahoo contest money is super-concentrated towards the top so to win you may have to make a skewed bet that feels somewhat uncomfortable to you.

This is AWESOME advice Toons. Thanks a million. Clapclap

I don't even notice that- he saved money at the WR position by avoiding the big 3. Wow, it really paid off too, especially with Odell playing small and Jordy getting hurt. Yep, you are right, he went all in on the Packer players and I bet with 5 minutes to play in the first half he thought he had no chance to win the 40k. And then the floodgates opened up for him.

A skewed bet, one that makes me uncomfortable......I like, that thought. I think you are right on there. I have to stand out somehow, someway.

Again amigo, your analysis, insight, and words are just what I needed to get me psyched for this coming week. Cheers.

In the case of roster construction, there's a lot of layers that need to be unravelled. Ownership is a big one. Some sites will do estimated ownership projection, but a lot of times you can figure out what the "public" will do based on what the touts are suggesting. If a bunch of fantasy people are slobbering over a guy and his matchup, the public is going to eat it up and get his ownership towards 20-28% in big tournaments.

In the case of this particular winning lineup, it's fairly logical to an extent. Jordy was touted by many people leading up to this game. The targets from the first matchup were a big factor. So he went contrarian to a point to get the Packers offense and hope Jordy would be bottle up again.

The running backs are from the two biggest favorites. Le'Veon imo was a must. Double digit home favorite? Always take the running back. It's a big reason why Legarrette Blount should be massively owned this week.

The Pitt D was a good play too. A lot of people were on the Texans, which provided a pivot from the masses. Again, a home favorite going against a somewhat questionable quarterback.

I tend to spend more time on DFS during the first couple weeks of the playoffs - obviously because the regular fantasy football season is over - but I really enjoy it because the matchups are typically good and I feel you can really zone in one the games you feel will be optimal for scoring.  With that being said, I'm a big fan of the Packers/Cowboys game this week as I have Dak, Bryant, Cobb and Cook in my most confident FanDuel lineup at this time.

Anyone have any thoughts on games/players they are leaning towards this week?

Cook is a good match up.
Dez and Dak appear to be good match ups too, but Packer defense has been playing better and better getting back some injured players. I'm debating between Dak or Rodgers, but of course the latter cost a lot more.
Cobb, especially with no Jordy- who can argue against.

I also believe Dallas will run Zeke to the ground and of course he is the goal line back bar none. I don't see how anyone can leave him off.

Now, which Patriot players do I like? I'm thinking Blount may have a good week or Lewis. One of those guys should do well, but I'm not sure which one yet.

I used a couple of bargain guys, including James White which I'll explain later, and I went with Le'Veon Bell over Zeke.  I like his matchup more than I do Zeke's and he has averaged over 28 fantasy points per game over his last eight games which is nuts.

As for the Patriots, I mentioned using White because I think he can be effective out of the backfield against Houston.  His production hasn't been cut into as much as I thought it would with the return of Dion Lewis, and I think White has the ability to catch some passes and find the endzone.  Since he was under $5,000, I wanted to take my chances with him instead of Lewis.

In terms of Patriots running backs, I just don't see how one wouldn't use Blount this week. The Patriots are 15 point favorites. I get the PPR factor of DFS, but this is the exact perfect storm of why you'd play the guy.

I am going to flout this theory and go with Dion Lewis. Save some money and will have a less % of ownership. Besides, Belichik.

Stacking Brady and Edelman, going with Zeke over Bell.

I agree that I think he will be used by a very high percentage of DFS lineups, and with Belichick being the unpredictable coach that he is, I like the idea of using Lewis or White this week.

I could also see a lot of people staying away from Roethlisberger and Brown this week due to Ben's track record on the road and the threat of bad weather.

Some things to consider when doing a LU construction.

1. Are you playing a Cash contest or are you playing a GPP contest, LU should be built very differently each type

2. Weather, know the weather for each game and how it might affect each skill set

3. Injuries, knowing will not play and what players will benefit from them not playing is important.

4. For cash contest you can assume you need at least 2X H-Value to have a chance to cash, for GPPs 3X or better is needed to cash big.

5.  For Cash you don't want to stack much more that a QB/WR or RB/Def and only if they are strong/safe plays, for GPPs stacking of QB/WR/WR or QB/WR/TE or RB/K/Def is a strong play

6. Look for Vegas to help you by looking to see what games will have the highest over/under totals and looking at the implied score for each team.  It's reasonable to assume that the players in these games will have the most success.

7.  Look for a low priced K playing at home, preferably in a dome or in good weather in a game with a high point total, the money you save playing a lower priced K can be HUGE.  This is more applicable for the regular season but can be used in the playoffs

8. Look for Def that are ranked high in the TO ratio and have talented K returners, KC is exceptional at this.  Often players get caught up in the fact that a DEf may get a  lot of points scored on them, that's not that important if they create TO and can score ST TDs.

9. Try building your LU from the Def to the QB, then from the QB to Def, it can be an eye opener

10.  When looking to punts at WR/TE, look for WR/TE that have a high rate of targets, even if they are not scoring high in previous weeks but are still getting targets they are good plays.

11.  Try scripting out how you feel a game will play out and then apply that to the players you use, for instance it's fairly obvious that Dall will run early and often this week vs GB.  If you feel they will be successful at this then you may want to fade Rodgers/Adams/Cobb/Allsion/Cook and go with Zeke/Bailey, if you feel they won't be able to then not only can you use the GB passing attack but you can assume that Dall will fall behind and will be forced to throw more than they usually do putting the Dall passing game into play along with the GB def.

There's a ton more, I would suggest visiting FBG's Daily Fantasy Board if you have an interest in playing NFL DSF next year or if you have an interest in playing NBA or MLB, some very knowable players on that board

Good Luck

Some GPPs I like are

Rodgers/Bell/Zeke/Adams/maclin/Eli/Witt/Gostk/NE

Brady/Bell/Montg/AB/Adams/TWill/Witt/Bailey/NE

Ryan/Bell/Zeke/JJ/Adams/Eli/CJF/Baily/NE

I was restless and entered one of those Sunday-only multi-entry GPPs that was tailor-made for the "sharks". The maximum number of entries a contestant could submit was either 150 or 1500, I don't remember which. Even so, there was good differentiation going on amongst the lineups at the top in the early going until midway through the 4th Qtr of the GB-DAL game when suddenly there was a logjam of 99 entries fighting for 1st, who all shared the same lineups (except for the fact that the choice between the PIT DST or the KC DST remained hidden)....

Dak Prescott

Ezekiel Elliott

Ty Montgomery

Dez Bryant

Davante Adams

Randall Cobb

Jared Cook

Dan Bailey

PIT or KC yet to play

It was sobering because these names are all great, standard choices and the winner's diluted share of the prize pool was less than 3% of what they assumed it would be had they known that they "would be in 1st place". The logjam persisted until well into the PIT-KC game when some Le'Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, and Chris Boswell owners finally broke through. The story ended on an enticing note as first place was shared by only 2 contestants, making for an awesome rate of return...for each dollar bet, 14,375 dollars were returned. They only had one or two sources of differentiation-from-the-crowd with the 13.2% owned Geronimo Allison who didn't score that much and the 20.8% owned Ty Montgomery who was a big difference maker.

Logjams notwithstanding, I think I'll be looking to enter these events in the future as the money at the top of a 205,000+ entry field can be sweet and the occurrence of close-to-unique lineups seems common enough to encourage me to enter the fray. It's also my belief that those who submit a ton of entries in an attempt to cover all the bases will be throwing a lot of less-than-par lineups into the mix, making the hurdle that I have to cross lower and my chances to cash higher.

I should point out that there are single-entry GPPs available for those who want to decrease their chances of encountering sharks and logjams, where the rates of return at the top are still quite handsome.

Toons,

Nice lineup.

I had Dez and Dak, but was having a hard time making my budget, so I ended up doing something to make me uncomfortable- I took Alex Smith and THill.

Well, that didn't work out so well for me, did it? I was happy to have Cook, Cobb, Julio, and Baldwin. No where even close to winner's 182 points though.

I also had Dak, Dez, Cook and Cobb in my lineup and good performances from Edelman and Bell to help round things out.

Where I had trouble breaking away from my comfort zone in my FanDuel contests was in veering away from Bell and Elliott at RB. I was aware, for instance, that the indications were that Dion Lewis was going to have a heavy workload but paying top dollar at RB is a policy that has served me well this year. You know that Le'Veon and Zeke are going to have monopolies on the RB work and you just can't say that with confidence about anyone else.

I wouldn't feel bad about using THill. At his cost and current usage levels, I was uncomfortable not having some representation in him in my FanDuel lineups. After all, 6 field goals from the Steelers meant 6 opportunities for Tyreek to return kickoffs.

This week there was more balance and less skew in the winner's lineups both at Yahoo and FanDuel and balance is something that I have a hard time getting away from, personally.

I was fortunate enough to finish in the top 7% in the standings (which would be good enough to get paid in a normal GPP  ) for week one of the Yahoo contest and the top 6% for week two; and there must be a multiplier effect because I'm sitting in the top 2% in the overall standings. So I've really got to roll up my sleeves and get to work for this final week. A double portion of soul-seeking time is going to have to be ordered up.

Maybe next week you can PM me if you don't want to make it public so I can copy your picks. I obviously still am struggling with this budget. I'm kicking myself for that swap I made. Obviously I had Dez and Dak first but removed them due to BUDGET CONTRAINTS. This is where I still need work.

Of course, it doesn't take rocket science to start Bell, Elliot, Rodgers, and Cobb with no Jordy, but the real skill is fitting in the right second tier guys, which I couldn't do. Honestly, I played with it too. I know you are probably thinking, why Alex Smith? My answer is simply this- Pitt can be had in the secondary, Pitt doesn't play that well on the road, KC isn't running well, KC has two hot guys in Kelce and Hill, and Alex is pretty consistent throwing 2 tds a game while not getting a ton of yards. Obviously, Alex' salary instead of Dak or Rodgers helped me pick up a few others I wanted, like Julio, Baldwin, and Cobb. Oh, I really blew it on Rawls (I forgot I had him).

I have now finished an entire season of play on DFS on Fanduel.  I mostly played low stakes $1-$5 tourneys of anywhere to 10 - 20,000 entries and nearly every game I played was listed as "Single Entry."

I'm just about convinced it's rigged.

Two things really bother me.  One, at the kickoff of the first football game for the week, all contest lineups lock.  Ok, so why not disclose all of them at that time if changes can't be made?  This is a HUGE red flag to me!  Second, I usually review the top spot for each game.  They often show some "outlier" at a position that I can not justify.  In other words, I would use hindsight and try to apply how that outlier guy had some increase in opportunity or some match up favorability that I somehow missed.  Most cases, there is no such detail that was missed.  It was just a random coincidence.

I was a skeptic going in, and after giving it a good full year I'm an even bigger skeptic.

Without full disclosure of lineups, I'll likely never play DFS again unless it's within a specific circle of known friends.  My tourney days are over for sure.  It just feels shady like the online poker sites.

I'm miffed at the partial disclosure you get these days because it was always a point of excitement to me after 1:01 PM to log in and see what the ownership percentages of my selections were. After the 4PM round of games start or the Monday night game, I don't care so much. The only thing I can figure is that FanDuel may run some 4PM-only contests and they don't want to grant an edge to those playing in earlier contests who could sift through the lineups to get an early read on what the ownership percentages will be for those 4PM games.

I also look at winners' lineups and am sometimes left scratching my head as to what the thought processes were that lead to their selections, particularly at wide receiver, unless it was simply contrarianism. But then I'm reminded of what a dear co-worker, who asserted that she was an overall winner at the racetrack, once told me. I was intrigued and asked what her handicapping principles were and she related the story of one of her biggest successes. It was a bet on Tight Fittin' Jeans in the 5th and she giggled and said that she just kinda liked the name. So when it comes to rationale, you just never know with some folks.

I gave some brief consideration to Alex Smith, particularly because of what it might open up elsewhere, but didn't care for 1) his historical low volume numbers, 2) PIT's recent success against QBs, and 3) the potential for bad weather.

I also had Rawls in my Yahoo lineup. When you consider 1) his previous week's usage and performance, 2) ATL's generosity toward the run, and 3) the news that Prosise would be inactive for Saturday; it was tough to get away from him.

While I believe that a person's lineup should be their own and that the wrestling and stretching that one goes through in order to craft a lineup is good exercise that will help you in future league endeavors, let's do this: Consider this sentence a "certificate" good for one "phone-a-friend" that you can use between now and Sunday noon to PM me and request input regarding one Player A vs Player B decision that you're wrestling with. Lol....I just hope that I'll be able to steer you in the right direction and not the wrong one. :P

You're on, Toons! Thanks. And don't worry, if your picks go sour, I won't blame you. That would be classless on me and my wife is convinced she married a classy guy. Lol. I play Yahoo with a $200 budget. Tomorrow I will be checking it out, day one.

The reason why entire lineups are not released is because most sites run early and late slates.

If they disclose the entire lineups, you'll have people seeing what players are heavily used among the sharps. If I see CSURAM88 or Tommy G's lineups and see a bunch of late game guys in the bulk of their lineups, you can make sure of it that I'm going to build a late lineup piggybacking off it.

This weekend is a little challenging for DFS with only two games.  But does anyone have any people they're definitely targeting or some bargain guys you're looking into?

Contrarian plays I like this week

RB- J White- Everyone will be on the DLewis wagon

RB- T Coleman- Will be higher owned than White but not what you may consider contrarian

WR-C Hogan

WR-T Gabriel

TE- Hooper

Will also throw some super stacks in there from both games hoping to catch lighting in a bottle

Even considering super stacking both sides of the ATL/GB game with such a high implied total

Amendola is due for a crazy big day. Last week had .2% ownership. Brady likes going to him in big games. I also like Ripkowski, Geronimo, and Richard Rodgers from GB.

Avoiding NE RBs this week. Going to spend my money on big name RBs and go cheap on WRs. Michael Floyd or Malcolm Mitchell could be low percentage picks that could go off.

Hooper is due. So is Jesse James.

Yea, I actually went with White last week after all of the Lewis hype and I got lucky that he was able to score on one of his few snaps.  I'm with you on Coleman this week since I think he has the ability to match Freeman in fantasy points and he's much cheaper.

The New England WR situation is a bit tricky.  I'm actually using Edelman this week with his consistency.  He's reached double-digit fantasy points in every game hes played in since October, and he scored 19 last week without even scoring a touchdown.  So I really like the Edelman play this week.

Steelers can be had thru the passing game.  Thus, a contrarian play might be Blount.

I'm real high on Edelman.  Anytime there is no Gronk, and Edelman is healthy he should be in your lineup.

The scary thing is that both games could be a track meet.  lol

If both Jordy and Adams miss the game, maybe Trevor Davis

Trevor Davis would definitely be a dirt-cheap bargain play; but I see Adams playing in this one and I wouldn't be surprised to see Nelson active as well.

Yeah, which is why I went with Alex Smith and Ty Hill last week and got burned. Lol on me for thinking the Steelers pass defense is that easy.

Just because it didn't play out doesn't mean it was wrong, I went safe with Rogers/Bell/Zeke/NE in all of my cash LUs and survivor LUs and didn't cash any, some days it just like that.

Your thought process was right, if that's any consolation.
