Ocasio-Cortez blasts tax breaks for Amazon

Amazon is a billion-dollar company," she wrote. "The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here."

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/416384-ocasio-cortez-blasts-tax-breaks-for-amazon-says-it-will-displace-working-class

She has a degree in economics from Boston University.

New York, Virginia gave Amazon these incentives for its new headquarters

Long Island City, New York

Amazon will receive performance-based incentives from New York state worth $1.525 billion, the company said, which means it wont receive the money unless it fulfills its promise to create 25,000 new jobs.

Of that $1.525 billion, it will receive a refundable tax credit worth as much as $1.2 billion over 10 years for the salaries it will pay workers. That equals about $48,000 for each of the 25,000 jobs it creates of which the tech giant claims the average wage will be over $150,000.

Amazon also received $325 million based on the square footage of the facility it will occupy over the next decade.

How?

2 ways

1) Promised the full new headquarters and then at the last minute, split it in two

2) Used the proposals from competing cities to strong arm the cities he always intended to locate to. I believe he was never considering any other sites.

One of the great things about women getting DC jobs is the country finding out that they are at least as incompetent as men.

Good read on Amazon mike. Agree.

Atlanta pretty much tried sucking the chrome off his trailer hitch. In the morning he didn't even buy them breakfast.

Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland...you name it. He jerked off America for his headquarters.

So what you're saying is hes a business man to get here and had shareholders the best possible deal?

That's absolutely what he is supposed to do. I didn't editorialize on him----just pointing out what he did. He played all the big cities....The cities are at fault for falling for his crap, not him.

It'll happen again too.

I was going to mention Wisconsin/Foxconn but they summarize it pretty well in your article. From another article...

At $4.1 billion, the payback date for the state was likely 2050 or later.

Some doubt the subsidy will ever actually be recouped. “Realistically, the payback period for a $100,000 per job deal is not 20 years, not 42 years, but somewhere between hundreds of years and never,” wrote Jeffrey Dorfman, an economics professor at the University of Georgia, in a story for Forbes. “At $230,000 [or more] per job, there is no hope of recapturing the state funds spent.” And this was before the subsidy had risen to $4.1 billion, or about $315,000 per job.

Great job by Scott Walker.

Yeah, wish they would've gone to places that need jobs more.

The food sucks there

that stood out to me also..no way avg is $150

Oh, the "average" wage might very well be 150k. That doesn't mean most people will be making that. Or anywhere near it.

I'm trying to remember who this chick is. Oh that's right she's the one that's going to have a billion dollar health care plan but she can't figure out how to pay rent for a job she knew she was going to get.

Perfect liberal

Ocasio-Cortez suggests she can’t afford DC apartment, but deep dive on finance records suggests otherwise

Ocasio-Cortez’s finances based on her own financial disclosure reports and the numbers seem to disqualify her from being a member of the “Rent is Too Damn High” club.

Numbers that show the proletariat should have at least $15,000 in savings.

Amazon’s NYC deal gets Cuomo, De Blasio on wrong side of Big Apple residents, fellow Democrats

New York’s top politicians, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, have been accused of an "immoral waste of taxpayers' money" and being out of touch with their constituents as the chorus of complaints grows louder over the incentive-laden package put together by the Democrats to lure Amazon to the Big Apple.

"True progressive leaders of the Democratic Party do not throw corporate welfare at the richest man in the world," New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who represents the area, told Fox News. "Jeff Bezos, Amazon Cuomo, and Mayor de Blasio got in a room and cut out the people who this deal is going to affect, whose money will be spent to make it all possible."

Not going to get into the politics of it but I know part of why they went to DC/NYC was due to the talent pools there. They've heavily recruited quite a few people in my industry which is based heavily in the DC area for high level jobs.

Amazon execs grilled, jeered at New York City Council hearing over HQ2

New York City Council members unloaded on Amazon and the Economic Development Corporation during a contentious hearing about the tech giant's plan to bring its second headquarters to the Long Island City waterfront.

During the hearing, two Amazon executives were peppered with questions about the deal that will bring at least 25,000 jobs paying an average of $150,000 per year in exchange for tax breaks and perks worth up to $3 billion. The plan for a helipad, which has been criticized by Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, drew particular scorn.

"The only transportation piece of this project I've seen involves a helipad. I'm serious. This is like something out of The Onion," said New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson in his opening remarks. "So yes, Jeff Bezos' commute is all set. What about the rest of the New Yorkers crammed into the subways every day?

Johnson, who plans to have more public hearings in the coming months, also said: "I'm already seeing stories of a real estate boom in Long Island City. Is that a good thing? Not to most New Yorkers who are already struggling to afford their rents here

Trying to figure out the strategy here. It appears to be "fock the rich". I am sure De Blasio will step in and clear this up.

Why didnt these dimwits think of this before the site was approved. It's not like Amazon just dropped the building in their backyard. Cities had to prostrate themselves and fellate Bezos multiple times. And now they are pushing back?

Idiots..

I wouldn't say great but interesting article. It is the perfect example of why the government should run less not more. The problem with the Wisconsin and New York agreements is you have unqualified, corrupt officials writing and signing very poor agreements.
