They still don't know what a catch is.

Recommended Posts

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admits that even the folks in the league office have had some passionate debates about what is and is not a catch.

“We debated that in the office the last couple weeks,” Goodell told USA Today. “And I think what we’re really going to do is get some people who are really focused on evaluating every one of these, and try to see, because it’s a balance between what you think is a catch, what the officials can officiate on a consistent basis and what’s going to have what we call the unintended consequences. If it’s too short a time . . . you’re going to get more fumbles on the field and (the question is) what kind of impact that has. So there are a lot of issues that need to be balanced in there. It’s not that simple a question. A lot of people believe the right way to do it is the second foot down and control, that’s a catch. That’s something we’ll have to look at. Again.”

The problem is that every time the NFL looks at the catch rule, the main takeaway is that no one can agree on a better way of writing the rule than the rule that’s on the books now.

And it seems unlikely that the NFL’s owners will agree on a new rule next offseason, either. So don’t expect much to change. Except that the “catch or no catch” question will continue to be debated.

I really think 2 feet down in bounds + control is the simplest way to define a catch. All these other measures are just dumb.

NCAA is no better...just docked Wisconsin out of a win.

Overturned the correct call on the field.

3-4 steps with control in the end zone...then a knee down. Doesn't equal a catch.

Didn't see that one. Is there a video out there I can see?

Why did they over-complicate this whole thing anyway?

Football is getting way too technical. No other sport I've seen has to question a play or anything as much as football.

But Goodell is doing a great job.

Also, Adam Carolla's latest NFL improvement suggestion is to change the color of the football from brown to a bright color. Brown pigskin was fine when the league was dominated by whitey. Now, the ball is the same color as most of these guy's arms.

It will be much easier for refs to see the ball when it's in the scrum since a bright color will contrast against all the brown arms. It could also help officials determine when a hand or an arm is under the ball on a reception. Of course, many players wear gloves now, so maybe those should be a mandated color that greatly contrasts the color of the ball.
