NewbieJr 540 Posted June 27, 2017 So what do you righties think of this healthcare bill? 21 million will lose coverage and over 700 billion taken from Medicare. Oh, and while the less fortunate will feel the brunt of the changes, the rich get a nice juicy tax cut. In my opinion, this vote will do more to affect future elections than anything else Trump/Republicans will do. If this passes and turns out to be a disaster, it'll be a bloodbath when these guys have to face their constituents. Not sure what the big hurry is to get this passed before they get it right. But in my opinion, the best thing that could happen to the right is for this to fail or McConnell simply pulls it and doesn't put it up for vote.

There's an evil side of me that wants to see this new bill pass. Certain demise for the party. Everyone knows that a successful system like this is funded by the young and healthy. Without the mandate, those people won't bother signing up. This is going to be a disaster. And Republicans get what they deserve.

crackattack 513 Posted June 27, 2017 My honest opinions on healthcare are kinda split. First and foremost, healthcare is a privilege not a right. Second, there should be no mandate. Now, the liberal part of me says if healthcare costs are going to continue to rise, premiums rise, middle class getting hammered by taxes, young/healthy people refusing to purchase until needed, government just throwing money at it. If this trend continues, just go to single payer and get it over with.

DankNuggs 305 Posted June 27, 2017 I don't know much about the bill... The only thing being talked about is some stat that for every million people who lose coverage 1-2k people die.... So they trot these stats out as facts and accuse repubs of killing people... So if 100% of americans had insurance, does that mean no one would die? It really doesn't make alot of sense to me. I presume the news or anyone else with the death counts hasn't read it either, because its lazy reporting
lickin_starfish 1,479 Posted June 27, 2017 I don't see the need to rush the health care issue. Why can't we take our time and come up with something good?I realize that Obamacare is collapsing upon it's own weight, but why come up with a Republican solution that will also fail? The heart of the problem, in my opinion, is the outrageous cost of healthcare. $200 to have a band-aid put on a boo-boo in the ER? $1000 to stay in a hospital bed overnight? C'mon man! That's the shite that is making insurance cost so much.

So as an analogy to Obamacare, you used to only be able to buy a ferrari under the old system... Then they changed the system so you can buy lots of different kinds of cars that may suit you in different ways. Maybe the ferrari is going to be even more expensive now, but people can buy a camry that will get the job done for them...

Whats the solution for big pharma? It costs billions of $ to research new drugs. You could have the government take over the whole industry to control the cost, then the politicians would be on the hook for how much to fund and what to fund. As of now you can blame the private industry that favors revenue production over researching drugs for rarer diseases. Those are real life and death decisions on what types of medications and treatments to pursue
crackattack 513 Posted June 27, 2017 You are 100% correct. Hospitals/pharmaceutical companies are the reason for all of these problems. But no one has the balls to do anything about it.Lawyers are another huuuuge problem. You ever wonder why you need an x-ray, cat scan, MRI, a full lab work up, all for when you go to the ER for a migraine. It's because Dr.s can't miss a diagnosis without fear of a lawsuit. That in turn drives up malpractice insurance, which drives up Dr salary, which in turn drives up costs. Hospitals employ hundreds/thousands of people. People who are college educated and in demand, so they demand high salaries/wages. Dr.s, lab techs, x-ray techs, MRI techs, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, social workers, PA's, IT department, helicopter pilots, etc etc. Those people get paid very well. I worked in an oncology pharmacy, and I can tell you the markup of drug costs are sickening, but it's also needed to help pay salaries, lawsuits, new equipment, equipment repairs. Technology is always changing, and always expensive.

Voltaire 4,556 Posted June 27, 2017 Hoping this dies in the Senate and stays dead, unlike the House version which came back from the grave to pass. At present, things are looking like the law is in trouble with the CBO score giving it bad marks and enough GOP Senators saying they won't support bringing it up for a vote. We'll see, if it's not passed by the 4th of July recess, there's a good chance it won't pass at all. Hopefully a silver stake goes into the heart of the bill killing it permanently, and then we move on to hopefully seeing tax reform fail too.

I do agree there should be no mandate. Pyramid schemes only work for those at the top. Exactly. You have a right to the access of healthcare and quality healthcare. No one should foot the bill for you. Now that being said the prices for treatments should be scaled WAY down. The same with tuition and textbooks for college. If people lose their free health insurance then they should pay to get some. You aren't owed anything in this life. Only vets, disabled (legit disabled people), and the elderly should have their healthcare taken care of. People with life threatening conditions should be able to have stuff done at an affordable cost
KSB2424 3,082 Posted June 27, 2017 The problem is the current model is not sustainable long term, premiums are rising more than they thought and we'll prolly have to sell Michigan on lay-a-way to pay for it. But lowering costs mean making cuts, and once an entitlement is, well, entitled it's political suicide to go back. So while this Bill cuts the deficit like 300 Billion by 2026 and the CBO predicts Premiums for us would be 20% LESS than under the current Obamacare model in 2026, it does make cuts to medicare and 20 million people who are insured would probably not automatically be (they'd have to go find their own). So we're stuck in Purgatory.

Alias Detective 1,179 Posted June 27, 2017 I think 21 million who won't have coverage likely should not have had WELFARE begin with. I also think the top few who are getting the tax cut is ridiculous. That said, how many of those getting a tax break have already giving substantial assets to charity? "At least $365 billion of giving has been pledged by 139 individuals"
