Perhaps we should talk about Keepers, ...deadline?

Recommended Posts

I personally have a good idea of what I want to do about keepers, ...but I am not 100% sure of how many years some of these guys have been kept. Example: Odubel Herrera was on my closing roster, ...I know that he was not drafted, but KEPT by somebody in a semi-late round. But I'm not sure how many more years (if any) he is available to keep. Once we get all of that info scraped together we should set a date to declare keepers. Commish?

Have reached out to posty for some help with the great spreadsheets we've used over the years for deciphering keeper values/options and for managing the actual draft itself. I'm fairly competent with my spreadsheet skills, but not close to his level of expertise. He's responded and will take a look. So, hopefully, we'll have some 2018 sheets ready to look at in the near future.

I'm a little hesitant to establish deadlines for anything until we get our manager list finalized. Down to one more... If I recall, we had similar delays trying to reach out to Foul Line last season. I've sent multi-texts and have now tried his Yahoo listed email address. We'll give it a few more days.

Re: Odubel - I'm a little confused by what you are asking, but can say that any undrafted player in 2017 cannot be kept in 2018. If the player was kept in a previous season by someone, that wouldn't matter for current or future keeper status.

Here's a refresher on our keeper rules;

* Roster Size : 30 rounds with 4 IR spots available.
* Each team can keep up a maximum of 4 players. Contract length is 3 years. Any Keeper status will follow a player if he is traded or picked up via the WW.
* Players drafted in rounds 1 through 4 cannot be kept the following year.
* For each player you keep you must give up a draft pick 3 rounds higher than the player's draft position the year before. If you have two players at the same former draft round then the next earlier draft round must be given up. For example in order to keep two 6th round picks one would have to draft their players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds the next season or acquire an additional 3rd round pick to avoid this happening.
* Players acquired via free agency cannot be kept unless they were drafted during that year.
* Only players in the Yahoo database can be drafted.
* Future draft picks cannot be traded.

I think I just answered my own question. Probably around All-Star Break, I saw that Odubel Herrera was available, ...starting to play a bit better--after a disappointing start. So I picked him up, ...especially knowing that FoulLine had kept Herrera as a 26th round keeper from the 2016 season. See link: http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=464450

My dumb question was: How many years had FoulLine kept Herrera? Well, since Odubel was his 26th round keeper, ...duh, ...FL must have drafted him in 2016 out of the 29th round--sealing that deal as the original draft year. I might be keeping Odubel H, for the 2018 season, as a 23rd rounder, ...but if I do that, I can only keep him one more year, ...for 2019, as a 20th rounder. Then, the dude has to go back into the pool for 2020.

And you're right Joe, ...we should hold off on a keeper deadline until we have a defined pool of owners. I am VERY happy that we so promptly got ELEVEN who are all ready to go for this year. Good to see!

You are correct re: Herrera, He was drafted in the 26th by Foul Line. You inherited his status when you grabbed him from the WW and he is indeed heading into his 2nd keeper year.

Any thought to increasing IR limit from 4 to maybe 5 or 6? Almost all last year I maxed out IR spots with more IR guys still on my active roster. With shorter DL durations allowed, just seemed more guys going on DL for shorter duration now allowed. Maybe I just had bad luck. LOL. I know I had a bad team.

If I draft Starling Marte again, I'm going to push for an 80-game PED suspension spot. What a chump! What a bad 2nd round pick, ...in BOTH of my leagues.

Ill definitely put that up for vote - I can relate to the DL woes.

Also, I heard from Foul Line, but his reply was cryptic. All he said was "K, this is not my normal #" - I texted back to ask for the best number to reach him at was and haven't heard back for 24+ hours now. Sigh...

Oh, and my home PC is on the fritz. 2018 has been a disaster for me so far. In any event, with Postys help, Ive got the info to get our 2018 keeper and draft sheets online. I just need to get to work to get to a computer. Double sigh...
