Question about Projections vs. Rankings

Recommended Posts

This is my first time to play fantasy football, and I have a question. I see that Peyton Manning and other quarterbacks should be ranked higher in rankings based on their projected fantasy football points. Why in most ranking systems that I have seen is he ranked about 9th or 10th when he is projected to provide the most FF points? Is it just because you start two running backs and its important to get at least one really good one?

The biggest reason is the scarity of quality RBs. Each team starts 2 RBs and there are very few RBs that will put up big points every week. They run out fast. QBs on the other hand, you only start one, so they are a dime a dozen. If you don't get Manning, you can still get a very good one much later.

Also, it's all relative. If you go to the home page of this website and click on "stats" and look at last years QB stats, you'll see the difference between the top QB and the #12 QB last year was about 4 points per game. Do the same for RBs and the difference between #1 and #12 is almost 9 points per game.

One of the mistakes new players make is assuming that because the QB position is so important in the real game of football, it must also be that way in fantasy football. RB is king in FF, and then WRs and then QBs. After Manning, it doesn't pay to take a QB until at least round 5, depending on your scoring system.

This article should help:

The Principles of VBD Revisited

It is not how much points a player scores, it is by HOW MUCH they OUTSCORE the other players at that position.

Take this example in a fictional 2 team league:

QB1 200pts +20

QB2 180pts

RB1 100pts +40

RB2 60pts

Clearly by taking RB1 you are creating the better team since:

RB1 + QB2 = 280 points

QB1 + RB2 = 260 points

Even though QB1 is projected to score the most points overall, the combo of RB1/QB2 wins.
