WASHINGTON (AP) - Hiring through the rest of 2012 will lag the brisk pace set early this year. But it will be strong enough to push the unemployment rate below 8 percent by Election Day.

That's the view that emerges from an Associated Press survey of 32 leading economists who foresee a gradually brighter jobs picture. Despite higher gas prices, Europe's debt crisis and a weak housing market, they think the economy has entered a "virtuous cycle" in which hiring boosts consumer spending, which fuels more hiring and spending.

The survey results come before a report Friday on hiring during April. The April report is eagerly awaited because employers added surprisingly few jobs in March. That result contributed to fears that the economy might struggle to sustain its recovery.

But the economists think the recovery will manage to reduce unemployment to 7.9 percent by Election Day from 8.2 percent in March.

Falling unemployment would boost President Barack Obama's prospects in November. Going back to 1956, no president has lost re-election when the unemployment rate dropped in the two years before the election. And none has won when the rate rose over that time.

Unemployment was 9.8 in November 2010. If the surveyed economists prove correct, the rate will be nearly 2 percentage points lower when Americans vote on Nov. 6.

Wow, that would be terrific news. Even though I'm gainfully employed, I realize a lot of people are out of work right now and hope they can get back into the job market this year. :)

Because the Republicans would love to see it rocket up to 12% around election time. It's not about the country, it's about which party wins.

Appears because of bogus manipulated metrics, not reality... Notice you are not saying it IS climbing out... kind of like how we've been 'gaining traction' for about 3 years now...lol

Europe is officially in recession, countdown has begun until Obama uses this as his next excuse for why socialism doesn't work

I was just here to impart GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICA! :first: Unfortunately some people like Dank here can't help but let their partisan politics get in the way and actively root against our country and hope for failure.

If I were Obummer I'd throw you into Gitmo until after I've got this economy thing fixed and the war on terorr is won. You're lucky he's a much more forgiving leader, even when it comes to dullards like you.

Shows the resilience of our economy when it can gasp for air under the crushing weight of incompetance and socialism...

Socialism???

Are you talking about the booming 50s under MaoEisenhower viciously redistributing our "job creators" wealth at 91 percent?
Or are you referring to MaoNixon's communist taxation of the rich at 70-some percent?
Are you talking about the 80s economy under MaoReagan's punishment of our "job creators" at a much higher rate than Obummer?

Surely, you're not talking about Obama's taxing of the super-rich (Romney) at 13 percent? Or that socialist focker forcing billion dollar Apple to "redistribute" at 9 percent..?

Corporate profits are at an all-time high... CEOs are making 30x and 40x what they did under our conservative "share the wealth" icons MaoEisenhower, MaoNixon, and MaoReagan.... NASDAQ and Dow Jones are at crazy highs.... highs we haven't seen since the Clinton era... paying dividends like crazy...

Where is this socialism that you speak of?

Just because your Alabama GOP Hillbillies Association (AGHA) sends you a chain email saying that "Obaby'smomma is a kenyin mooslim socilest america-hater".... does not make it so, Danky
