*********THE OFFICIAL: OBAMA IS RUNNING ON HIS RECORD FOR RE-ELECTION THREAD***********

Recommended Posts

Zero didn't have anything to say about his awesome record on the trail today. However, he did have this:

Obama on the Paul Ryan budget: "We wouldn't have the capacity to enforce the laws that protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, or the food that we eat. Cuts to the FAA would likely result in more flight cancellations, delays and the complete elimination of air traffic control services in parts of the country. Over time, our weather forecasts would become less accurate because we wouldn't be able to afford to launch new satellites and that means governors and mayors would have to wait longer to order evacuations in the event of a hurricane. That's just a partial sampling of the consequences of this budget."

Vote for the Republican, die in a hurricane.

That doesn't sound like an example of Obama running on his Super-D-Duper record, Barney.

Looks like scaring the skirts off the base is his strategery.

More from today's campaign trail:

"Here's the deal the states would be getting. They would have to be running these programs in the face of the largest cut to Medicaid that has ever been proposed," President Obama warned on Tuesday.

"A cut that according to one nonpartisan group would take away health care for about 19 million Americans. 19 million. Who are these Americans? Many are someone's grandparents, who without Medicaid won't be able to afford nursing home care without Medicaid. Many are poor children. Some are middle class families who have children with autism or Down syndrome," he said.

Republicans “will brook no compromise,” Obama told news executives at the annual meeting of The Associated Press.

He cited a Republican presidential debate late last year when the entire field rejected the prospect of $10 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases as a means to lower the debt.

“Think about that. Ronald Reagan, who as I recall was not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control that for him to make a deal he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases,” Obama said. “He did it multiple times. He could not get through a Republican primary today.”

He's certainly hitting the right chords for Reagan fans and former Republicans who think today's GOP has gone completely cookoo. The best thing to come out of the budget negotiation collapse last year was the automatic budget cuts. My hope is that Obama will finally kill the Bush tax cuts when they expire in December.

So you want Obama to break his promise not to raise any taxes on the poor and middle class.....again?

Allowing a temporary tax cut to expire is not raising taxes. Besides this tax cut, mind you, is one that immediately destroyed our balanced budget from the previous year and contributed mightily to all subsequent budgets being out of whack.

Besides more to your point, if it were up to Obama, those tax cuts aimed at the poor and middle class would remain in effect. They were a small part of the bill anyways, mostly serving as a distraction and a token to give it more popular support. The cuts were always intended for the wealthy. If the GOP wants these tax cuts for the poor and middle class to continue, they just have to offer their blessing to it. Obama's already on board.

Allowing a 50% increase in the tax rate for the poorest income tax payers isn't a tax increase? Who knew. :dunno:

The Reps don't want the taxes to go up on the poor, middle class, or the rich. They don't need to "offer their blessing" to Obama, or get on board with him. They have always been there.

Not fully accurate. They want to link the whole irresponsible package to go on permanently -especially the tax cuts for the rich. The first time this came up, Obama wanted to decouple the tax cuts for those under $250K from the rest of the tax cuts. I thought it was a winning strategy but foktard Obama folded a flush hand in the face of the GOP's a pair of fives.

So if Sears runs a special and, for three days, drops prices 50% on all appliances. Are they raising prices when those three days are over?

The White-African-American POTUS and his minions don't seem to have a vision for the future to run on.

"No Vision, No Record!"

Or mebbe:

"No Plan, But we don't like yours!"

Doesn't have the same ring as "Hope & Change!"

On February 16, at a hearing of the House Budget Committee, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was asked by committee chairman Paul Ryan to describe the administration’s plans for addressing the mounting risk of a debt crisis. His reply was: “We’re not coming before you today to say we have a definitive solution to that long-term problem. What we do know is we don’t like yours.”

I'd say a good slogan (though a tad lengthy) would be, "We stopped the collapse and are slowly tutning things around. Why stop the momentum and hand it back the folks responsible?"

Here's a major prong of the Dem strategy for the upcoming election.

This issue is a huge, huge win for the Dems and one of the major reasons I still think the GOP sucks ass. I look forward to the Mitt Romney explaining to everybody on behalf of all Republican members of Congress why he should pay significantly less taxes than they do. Then slap him around on his embrace of the "marvelous" Ryan budget plan that cuts taxes for the rich like himself even more.

The Dems will go on to complain about the spending cuts in the Ryan play -an argument I'm not so keen on as I agree generally with Ryan- but that's the breaks.

I'm all for entitlement reform, here's my chainsaw, but there's go to be some give in the tax end for the well-off so that the budget reduction sh*t hits the fan, it splays around and covers everyone.

Democrats Ready to Pressure G.O.P. on ‘Buffett Rule’

By JONATHAN WEISMAN

Published: April 6, 2012

WASHINGTON — President Obama and Senate Democrats will kick off a coordinated pressure campaign on Republicans next week ahead of a tax day vote on legislation to enact the president’s “Buffett Rule,” which would ensure that the rich pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes.

Mr. Obama will travel to Florida on Tuesday for a speech on the Buffett Rule, named after the billionaire investor Warren E. Buffett, who has made a point of saying that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. The Obama campaign will hold Buffett Rule events in other swing states that day, and Senate Democratic leaders have encouraged Democratic senators to get involved with those campaign efforts.

“Making sure that everyone plays by the same set of rules is key to ensuring the economic security of the middle class,” said Amy Brundage, a White House spokeswoman, “and the president will continue to make this case next week.”

The push comes ahead of a procedural vote on April 16 that will decide whether the Senate will even debate the bill, and Democrats give it little chance of reaching the necessary 60-vote threshold. The blitz comes with some risks. After Friday’s jobs report for March fell short of expectations, Republicans will make the case that raising taxes — even on the very wealthy — would do nothing to put Americans to work.

“This is yet another proposal from Democrats that won’t create a single job or lower the price at the pump by a penny, but may have the opposite effect,” said Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate minority leader.

But Democrats see multiple reasons to go forward. The bill will put political pressure on some Republicans, especially two senators facing tough re-election fights, Dean Heller of Nevada and Scott P. Brown of Massachusetts. And it will allow Mr. Obama and his surrogates to go after Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, not only on his low tax rate — he paid 13.9 percent in 2010 on $21.7 million in income — but also on his refusal to release more tax returns than 2010 and a 2011 estimate.

“Governor Romney will have to explain why he believes it is fair that he and the wealthiest Americans who make most of their income from investments pay a lower tax rate than middle-class families,” said Ben LaBolt, an Obama campaign spokesman.

The Obama campaign demanded that Mr. Romney emulate his father and other previous presidential candidates, Mr. Obama included, who released years of tax returns. A Romney campaign adviser, Eric Fehrnstrom, told the cable news channel MSNBC on Friday that the releases of the 2010 returns and the 2011 estimate were “sufficient.”

Mayor Michael A. Nutter of Philadelphia said Friday on a conference call set up by the Democratic National Committee: “Here’s a guy running for president of the United States. Level with the public, and let the American people know just what those tax returns look like.”

The Senate legislation would establish a minimum 30 percent tax rate for households earning at least $2 million a year, with a lower minimum rate for incomes between $1 million and $2 million. Such wealthy families would calculate their taxes normally, and using the minimum tax rate, then pay the higher amount.

Republicans see the push as a political loser at a time when jobs and energy prices are top concerns. The Romney camp used the effort to portray Mr. Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal.

“President Obama may wish for a perfect world in which he could spend as much as possible,” said the Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul, “but the last thing we need in this struggling economy is higher taxes on anyone.”

But Democrats view the coming Buffett Rule vote as fitting into a theme of “fairness” for the middle class at a time when most Americans see a society tilted in favor of a wealthy elite. An Associated Press/GfK poll in February found that 65 percent favor a law requiring all Americans with incomes of $1 million or more to pay at least 30 percent in taxes. Only 26 percent opposed.

White House officials will target senators in 13 states with media outreach efforts, while Obama campaign volunteers try to raise the heat.

“This is one of those issues where if the American people are watching, our chances of winning the vote are dramatically improved,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island and the author of the Buffett Rule bill. “If people can vote in the dark, the special interests that support the loophole have a much, much better chance of holding on.”

Few believe there will be enough — or any — Republican defections. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, told reporters this would be the first of many votes on the issue. The vote on April 16 is on stand-alone legislation that would devote the estimated $47 billion in added tax revenue over 10 years to deficit reduction. Future votes would use the Buffett Rule to offset the cost of job-creation measures like infrastructure spending, student loan relief or tax breaks to encourage hiring.

Mr. Whitehouse said that by raising public attention, Mr. Obama and Senate Democrats would increase the chances that some sort of minimum tax level for the rich would be part of an end-of-year deal, when the Bush-era tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 are set to expire.

Report: 'Buffett tax' would raise just $31B over 11 years

By Alan Fram, Associated Press Updated 3/20/2012 4:29 PM

WASHINGTON – A bill designed to enact President Obama's plan for a "Buffett rule" tax on the wealthy would rake in just $31 billion over the next 11 years, according to an estimate by Congress' official tax analysts obtained by The Associated Press.

One of the major problems with the GOP is their obsession with keeping tax cuts out of the discussion and their willingness to go to extremes to defend the indefensible. The Buffett tax proposal is less about closing the deficit (although that $31B surely helps) than it is about making sure that rich folks pay at least as much -if not more- than other taxpayers.

Buffet has explained very well how and why the rules are rigged to allow folks like him to pays less taxes than his secretary and how he pays the lowest taxes of all his employees in his office. He explains why the rules are stupid and should be changed. Now you can expect to hear a lot from the Dems this election about how the entire GOP lines up to grease the system so that people like Buffett and Mitt Romney pay significantly less taxes than they do.

Mitt Romney is going to get asked this question and I look forward to hearing how he makes the case for why he should pay less taxes than anybody else.

The Dems of course have problems too, and Obama specfically, but theirs are always less ridiculous in comparison.

$31 billion is a spit in the ocean, but you have fallen for the Obama line that it is the be-all and end-all. He counts on people as gullible as you for his support.

I won't humiliate you by bringing the stats about how much of the total tax burden the top 1%, 10% etc....pays because it has been beaten to death here. The fact you are clueless on this is what Obama is counting on for your vote.
