Cigarettes - how much they cost in you neck of woods

Recommended Posts

Yeah!!! FUKK FREEDOM....Unless your ghey. Then you should be able to get married. Or if you're pregnant, then you should be able to have an abortion.

But other than those, FUKK FREEDOM. Power to the Peo......Government......

Doesn't have anything to do with personal freedoms, nobody said ban anything. If people want to use health cost for uninsured on why we tax cigs so much, then all unhealthy habits should be treated the same. Why single out just one group of many?

I quit years ago, when i did they were in the $5-6 range.

I'm now on and off addicted to nicorette, which coincidentally is just as expensive as cigs are... I had quit them until i went on a boys weekend a few months ago and my buddy who used to dip uses the gum and offered me a piece... :wall:

Let's see. Ciggs costing between $5-10 per pack. A smoker who smokes 1 pack per day spends $150-300 per month for these things.

I would be curious to know.

What % smokers are under the poverty line?

What % of smokers are on assistance or some type?

What % of smokers vote democrat?

What % of smkers vote republican?

:dunno:

I'm with you - tax the he!! out of disease-causing behavior. People are too irresponsible to do the right thing unless sh!tty choices are prohibitively expensive.

So the goverment needs to enact laws to save them from themselves?

Tobacco is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans every year.1 Another 8 million Americans suffer from a smoking-caused disease, disability, and other serious health problems.2 Thanks to the tobacco industry’s targeted marketing efforts, lower-income and less educated populations are particularly burdened by tobacco use – low-income people smoke more, suffer more, spend more, and die more from tobacco use.3 The tobacco industry has gone to great lengths to target lower income and racial and ethnic groups.4 Through market research and aggressive promotions, the industry has successfully penetrated these communities and the industry’s “investment” in these communities has had a destructive impact.

Tobacco Use Among Lower-Income Populations

Smoking is directly correlated with income level and years of education. Since the release of the first Surgeon General’s Report on smoking in 1964, smoking has become ever more concentrated among populations with lower incomes and fewer years of education. Whereas the highest income Americans once smoked at levels even greater than the poorest, they now smoke at barely half the rate of those of lowest income.

• 28.9 percent of adults who are below the poverty level smoke, compared to 18.3 percent of adults who are at or above the poverty level.5

• Families with the highest income level experienced a 62 percent reduction in current smoking between 1965 and 1999, while families with the lowest income level only experienced a 9 percent reduction in current smoking rates over the same time period.6

• Among adults under age 65, 31 percent with Medicaid coverage smoke compared to 32 percent who are uninsured and 16 percent with private insurance coverage.7

• 25.1 percent of adults who do not graduate from high school smoke compared to just 9.9 percent of those with a college education, and 6.3 percent of those with a graduate degree.8

• Smoking among non-college bound high school seniors is twice that of college bound high school seniors (32.2 percent vs. 15.6 percent, respectively).9

• An analysis of data on ever smokers from the 2003, 2006 and 2007 Tobacco Use Supplement of the Current Population Survey found that individuals in poverty had a median duration of smoking of 40 years while those with a family income three times the poverty threshold had a median duration of 22 years. Similarly, the median duration of smoking among individuals without a high school education was 40 years while it was 18 years among those with at least a bachelor’s degree.10

Then why can't other businesses use the same target marketing to promote - let's say investing?

For sure $300 per moth in a ROTH IRA is better than being burnt right between your pointer and middle fingers.

Whats the seat belt law for? My car, I paid for it, why do I get fined if I don't wear my seat belt? A law by the government to protect me, cause I'm to dumb to do it myself.

It wouldn't work. The "benefits" of smoking are immediate. The benefits of investing are delayed.

He didn't say ALL smokers were on assistance....he was just making a correlation that showed that smokers were more likely to be on assistance.

And the rest of us - drunk drivers, fatties on airplanes, secondhand smoke, etc.

Don't forget sex addicts, alcoholics, drug addicts, hoarders, compulsive shoppers, compulsive gamblers, internet addicts, workaholics, workout addicts, anorexics, bulemics, etc. ad nauseum.

Quite frankly... I'd say north of 75% of the human population has some habit that is not good for them, either physically, spiritually, mentally, or financially. In most cases, it is those things that keep people from splattering their brains all over the focking wall.

Haha. Same here. I conveniently omitted that part, when I said i quit 5 years ago. Although, to save money I get the 4MG ones and cut them in half. I only buy a box of the gum once every 6 months or so, so it's not a huge expense. Chew it when I'm drinking or stressed at work.

I miss being able to find Sobranies (the colored ones with the gold filter) they were my favorite.

I pretty much quit smoking a couple of years ago, but still have a couple every night, while reading before bed.

Brand of choice: American Spirit Ultra Lights- $6.50-$7.00 in SoCal.

Those fockers are $5.60 something PRE TAX here in TN. I figured cigs would require a mortgage in cali.

Surprisingly, California has one of the lowest state cigarette taxes. I believe it's only 87 cents, or something like that.

When I was in HIgh School Cigs were like 2.20 a pack in Vegas and 3 bucks on Long Island -- that was back in 92 -- so in 20 years the price has gone up X4 or X5.... Thank you Mr. Clinton and your Cig Taxes you started and after that they kept uping the damn cig tax every year it seems -- thats why there so much.

In Chicago I smoke Newports on occasion when I am out or at work and need a reason to take a break. they are 10 bucks a pack here in Chicago.

Let's start with the most important ones, in terms of attributable disease burden - smoking, poor dietary choices and drinking. Two of those three are easy to pinpoint targets for obnoxious taxation. Food is a bit trickier, I'll admit.

I live in Hawaii and I was paying about $8.50 a pack or $70.00 a carton. I just switched to ""E-Cigs" and now I pay the equivalent of $7.00 a carton or $6.00 a carton if I buy 5 at once. If you ever tried it and didn't like it I suggest you try it again, they have new models that are far better than the original ones that came out a couple years ago. Nicotine does not kill people, it's the other stuff that comes in cigarettes that does and E-cigs have none of that. Not only is it cheaper but I don't have to go outside for "cigarette breaks" anymore, there is no second hand smoke issues since all you exhale is water vapor and nicotine, I don't have to worry about lighters, my clothes don't stink anymore, and it's a lot less harmful then regular cigarettes. The only reason why I can imagine people have not switched yet is because they haven't given E-cigs a serous try.

Maryland it's about $7 a pack.

I live 20 minutes from Virginia where it's $4-5/pack. When I visit friends/family in VA, I make sure to pick up a carton for $40-$45.

That's not entirely true. While true, e-cigs or nicotine gum is much safer than actual cigs, nicotine is lethal to an average adult at just 75 mg's. Considerably less than arsenic, strychnine, etc. etc. It also speeds your heart up and shrinks your blood vessels, which could cause a heart attack. It's basically like drinking 10 or 20 cups of coffee....

I give you smokers credit, you are a dedicated bunch. Even though it is obviously awful for you and it is stupidly price, you still brave through it and insist on smoking.

Dip <> smoking and everyone isn't wired the same. If we were, don't you think we'd all be uproariously funny?
