Let's take a look at UDFA runningbacks

Recommended Posts

1 or 2 of these guys will be fantasy relevant. They always are. Here are my favorites:

  1. Lavon Coleman - Texans - Washington - Was really good in 2016 but fell off a cliff. Guessing he was injured. Putting him up top because Lamar Miller has been on a downtrend, Foreman is coming off an achilles, and Blue sucks. Feel like he has the straightest path to carries.
  2. Mike Boone - Vikings - Cincinnati - Explosive back not afraid to run between tackles, but he doesn't cut well. Think he'll make the team as the RB3. I really like this guy.
  3. Malik Williams - Falcons - Louisville - I feel like one of these Louisville backs is probably good. Malik is my favorite of the bunch. Of course, he has to get some breaks to even make the team fighting with Ito and 2 other UDFA RB's
  4. Detrez Newsome - Chargers - Western Carolina - Feel like there isn't a great deal of real talent behind Gordon. Ekeler is a change of pace. That opens the door for Detrez to make the roster. Then he's probably on the field if Gordon goes down… again
  5. De'Lance Turner - Ravens - Alcorn St - The Ravens only have 3 backs, but they're all probably locks to make the roster. Not to mention he's got 2 other guys to beat out as UDFA's
  6. Roc Thomas - Vikings - Jacksonville St - The only reason he's not higher is I think he's too small. He might beat out my man Mike Boone to make the roster and be in line for touches.
  7. Mark Thompson - Ravens - Florida - Another Ravens candidate to make some noise just because they could use a live body.
  8. Akrum Wadley - Titans - Iowa - He'll probably make the roster as a change of pace, but I don't think he'll be more than a 3rd down back. Ceiling is probably Chris Thompson
  9. Terry Swanson - Texans - Toledo - He's this high on oppurtunity alone. If Lavon Coleman is toast, there are oppurtunities for Swanson to eat
  10. Darrel Williams - Chiefs - LSU - Not very fast, but he's this high because the Chiefs like to take no name backs and turn them into studs
  11. Justin Crawford - Falcons - West Virginia - We are well into the players that probably won't make the roster now.
  12. Jeff Wilson - 49ers - North Texas - Not a very talented depth chart, and he runs a little upright and doesn't run between the tackles.
  13. Nick Holley - Rams - Kent St - 3rd down back that might make the team as a change of pace
  14. Dontrell Hilliard - Browns - Tulane - Tulane son! I don't see how he makes the squad though with all of the guys they have.
  15. Demario Richard - Falcons - Arizona St - Maybe he's the best of the 3 UDFA's the Falcons have.
  16. Dimitri Flowers - Jets - Oklahoma - I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team as a fullback, but he won't do much in that role. Could also play H-back I suppose
  17. Buddy Howell - Dolphins - FAU - Probably a practice squad guy if he sticks around
  18. Shaun Wilson - Bucanneers - Duke - 3rd down back
  19. Gus Edwards - Ravens - Rutgers - 2-down thumper, but he has some speed
  20. Keith Ford - Bills - Texas A&M - May be a jerk? Can't see him making the roster
  21. Robert Martin - Giants - Rutgers - With Perkins on IR I can see him making the roster, but he's not as good of a player as Keith Ford in my opinion
  22. Phillip Lindsay - Broncos - Colorado - 3rd down back
  23. Jordan Chunn - Cowboys - Troy - Has a shot as short yardage back on some team that ain't the Cowboys
  24. Reggie Bonnafon - Panthers - Louisville - Physical freak - played QB, WR, and RB. I hope he succeeds somewhere.
  25. Josh Adams - Eagles - Notre Dame - Bruiser with no shake. He can't beat out Ajayi, Clement, Sproles, but how do they keep Pumphrey over another bruiser when they already have 2 pass catchers
  26. Jarvion Franklin - Steelers - Western Michigan - Long shot to make team
  27. Ryan Nall - Bears - Oregon St - Short Yardage back
  28. Martez Carter - Redskins - Grambling St - Probably a camp body to play the Chris Thompson role when he needs a break
  29. Dalyn Dawkins - Titans - Colorado St - Not in the same neighborhood as Wadley and fighting for the same spot
  30. Ralph Webb - Patriots - Vanderbilt - No way he makes the roster

Yeah, he could take over that Lagarette Blount role. Problem is I don't think he'll play special teams, so if he sticks around it'll have to be practice squad unless they keep 5 backs.

If Ryan Nall didn't have the depth chart he has with Howard and Cohen, I'd be all over him in dynasty.

I'm not sure how much you guys look to the future as far as college potential goes. But to me, this is a great year for a list like this, and taking chances.

This is solely my opinion, but next season is gonna be very poor year for runningbacks. Of course you're gonna get a couple that look good, and a couple more that will fall into a good situation. But get your RB's this year. Get your studs, get your sleepers, take your chances.

The Charger guy needs someone to get hurt, they are high on Jackson as the 3rd back

I see Jackson as the first back up and the first one up Incase M Gordon gets hurt.

How about you?

I’m just trying too get insite about Jackson and if he is worthy of a rb5 in a redraft

Thanks appreciate your input.

I don't, I see a guy in Jackson who if Gordon got hurt, gets only what Ekeler can't handle. Ekeler was crazy efficient last year, and deserves more touches

Of course I remember when Brandon Oliver was that guy.

I dont think Jackson is even rosterable in redraft. Hes a guy you grab if either Ekeler or Gordon go down

You really think he’s the first one up?

Can I ask you why?

I like Akrum Wadley as a deep deep sleeper. I think he profiles as a Dion Lewis clone. If Lewis were to go down I think he gets snaps and if Henry were to get injured he would be interesting to see in that offense.

College dominater who routinely went against Big ten defenses, had an early breakout age, and produced every single year at Northwestern. Great pass catcher and pass blocker.

You really think hes the first one up?

I read he was a below average pass blocker for what it's worth.

Worth a lot thanks.

I agree with this, especially with the news that the Lewis and Henry combo will be a 1A and 1B situation. I was a little surprised that Wadley went undrafted and I think he'll see time if there's an injury.

Heres a deep sleeper but was drafted and thats Ito Smith for the falcons. He was a beast at Southern Miss and really got overlooked as a solid satellite back

Just FYI, Roc Thomas got the backup duties to Lat Murray (Cook not playing) and picked up 2 receiving TDs in the first half.

Too far down on the depth chart for a redraft (barring injuries), but he might be worth a stash in a deep dynasty league.

Rasheed Mostert of SF should be on this list and he gets a bump in return leagues. Every rb in front of him in SF has one question mark or another next to his name.

Nice list, guys like this somehow someway always end up as impact players for fantasy at some point in the season. Then next year when they are 3rd round picks we all act like we saw it coming a mile away.

Even more so now:

Jerick McKinnon (right knee) will receive an MRI Sunday.

McKinnon stayed down holding the back of his knee following a hit Sunday.

I only looked at rookie UDFA's. Raheem is a 3rd year vet.

Roc Thomas looked outstanding tonight. At best he's the third option right now but someone to keep an eye on for sure.

Grain of salt. Broncos looked like they weren't coached that game. I've never seen so many terrible angles and half-ass effort. I wonder if they were point shaving because it's preseason.

I agree with this, Wadley would definitely be worth a stash in dynasty leagues, as he is an elite open field runner. His lower body frame is a little small, and IMO that is the only reason why he went undrafted, as he showed better hands and agility than most backs drafted this year. I will miss watching him at Iowa, but I think he could make some noise on a team in need of a pass catching back. IMO he would have been a great fit (to make early noise) for MIA, DEN, SEA, OAK, SF, or LAC... unfortunately he's stuck behind Dion Lewis

Newsome just waived by Chargers

Darrel Willaims is RB4 for KC

Buddy Howell RB4 for the Texans

Shaun Wilson has 2 carries for 15 yards and 2 catches for 9 yards for TB.

Josh Adams had 6 carries for 30 yards last week for Eagles.
