McCain wasn't 'loved and respected', especially by the left or his former service members. In 2007 Glenn Simpson trotted out a large portion of the Muh Russian Collusion narrative against McCain. Only difference was that McCain WAS actually talking to Deripaska (Oligarch). Simpson just dusted off most of the rumors and rebranded with Trump instead of McCain since it worked in the past.
