I'm surprised this hasn't came up yet on here. Maybe it has and I missed it.

Which version do you prefer and why?

TOTO:

WEEZER:

Also, its easy to play them side by side or even at the exact same time with both links on screen at once. I synched them up...and it sounded like sh#t.

The song did not need to be redone. First, it sucked in the first place. What is that? It sounds like something John Tesh would release.

second, if you're going to do a song at least put your own spin on it. You literally can't tell the difference between the two versions. I guess that makes me easier a really good cover band?

Stupid song in first place.

On topic if you haven't seen this performance of Africa,do yourself a favor

This group just got voted off AGT. Usually I think large groups of people singing a song is dumb.

These guys nailed it though.

I saw them the original night they were on, and secretly rewound it more than once to hear it again.

I almost started a thread on these guys a few days ago. This is your winner.

(Leo Morriachiali)

Africa was meant to be clean. This version is too ..... I dunno. To screamy.

That's why I like the Angel City Chorale one better than this one.

And why I like Toto version better than Weezer.

I didn't know weezer did it until recently. I like the ending on this version.

I was hoping the title didn't give it away. The picture does anyway.

I really like the original and usually hate metal covers. People seem to think it is super creative to cover a song in a different style but it isn't.

Metal version > original but both great. Others, meh.

Some guy that was really into guitars told me that apparently Toto's guitarist was like the number 5 guitarist in the world as ranked by people who give a about that.

If so, that's a waste.

Again, I never knew what toto was supposed to be. A rock band? Hardly. They made mister mister look like Megadeth.

Newbie used to extoll the virtues of Steve Lukather and all the acclaimed musical talent in Toto. Sadly, he was correct, they are revered by other musicians and critics.

TOTO's personal interpretation of WEEZER's "Hash Pipe" can be streamed below. The smoking rendition of the song is a direct response to the runaway success being witnessed globally for WEEZER's covers of the hits "Africa" and "Rosanna".

TOTO guitarist Steve Lukather shares: "We were blown away at the response WEEZER got doing our old songs. They did a good job too, but we never saw hit records coming from it.

This ^^^.

Not to take anything away from Weezer, they actually didn't do too bad.

Yeah but like Wiff said, if you are going to cover a song, at least add your own spin to it. I saw that Weezer vid earlier and thought "who is this lounge band?"

At least the metal version was different. I was entertained.

I need to listen to nzoner's choir version.

This was one of their rockier songs that was a hit......

Jeff Porcaro, the drummer is considered by many to be one of the best of all time as well. The amount of people and albums he played on in the 80s is ridiculous.

Eh, liked it, didn't love it. It's a song that lends itself to that sort of arrangement but again they didn't do much to put their stamp on it. Also the 3 males soloists were just OK. :dunno:
