Fave activity in Colorado is watching morons with 4wd and a clear lane zoom by in the snow.

...then driving by them real slow 2 miles up the road as they're wiped out in the median/ditch.

Those cars were going waaay too fast for conditions regardless.

Last week I was coming back from the casino in some whiteout conditions and the roads not terrible but not good either. It amazes me how stupid some people drive. I went 40 the whole way (speed limit was 65MPH). Car went zooming by me going prolly 70, he was in a ditch a few miles up the road. Dumb.

 

When the roads are like that it just takes one little thing and it could all be over. Better safe then sorry for sure.

Best guess is you couldn't see up ahead what was going on until you were already on top of it basically. Scary stuff, incredible that only 1 person died.

I think its the herd mentality.  Humans get in a group and if they see everyone ELSE doing something, they start to think it is OK to do it or even feel peer pressure to do it so as not to get singled out for ridicule.  It can also be very beneficial in life to take such mental shortcuts.  Unfortunately on highways it means if everyone is driving 50 MPH on a snow-covered highway, the human response is to shut off the brain and ALSO do it no matter what else they see.  That's why we end up with videos of 57 car pileups with every freaking car plowing into the wreck at 50 MPH.

I used to live up north and back in the 80s, in high school we had an away basketball game. It was raining and the weather prediction was that it was going to drop under freezing during the game. When we came out, the road was an absolute sheet of ice. They couldnot get out to salt the roads yet. We drove home at 5 fockin mph.  Of course, we were also really fockin high. Anyway, a car in front of us tapped the brakes and I remember us all saying, 'no, don't do that, get off the brakes' as the car started sliding sideways and then off to the left down into the ditch. Seriously 5 mph. It was so cool. No one should be barreling down the highway at those speeds when they are like ice.

That's one of the few things I miss about up north. Getting in a car, driving down the road, swerving into the church parking lot, gunning it and being 1st to whip around in circles. Everyone hit that parking lot whenever the roads froze.

 The fucktard in the grey car has his flashers on and so did the guy in the truck. Smart enough to put the flashers on, too dumb to drive a ta safe speed.
