SF tourism suggestions

Recommended Posts

Heading to San Francisco this weekend for a concert.  Aside from Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, and dodging piles of bum sh1t, what are some other sights worth checking out?

Any Bay Area geeks have any recommendations?

IMO you've captured the three major visitor attractions.  Bum sh1t is the gift that keeps on giving there.

I'm not from there, but I visited last year for a convention at Moscone Center.  I rented a car but never needed it, and spent $30+ a day to park it.  So if you are staying in SF and not heading out of the city, my advice is to use trains and ride shares.

That being said, there is some hiking I've wanted to do north of the city in Marin County area, particularly Mt. Tamalpais to the coast:

Ping Bier Meister for SF restaurant recs.

Great, now I have the Blue Oyster Bar music stuck in my head.

Should've mentioned that we're not bothering with a rental. Hotel is right near the train so we'll use BART for to/from airport.  Concert venue is also only about 5 blocks away from hotel.

Had no choice, as SF is closest venue for Dream Theater on their current tour. Also lines up with when both of my college aged kids are between quarters.

Below is what you sent me on FB from our Napa trip last October; we never made it to SF but you had a ton of recs:

SF

Drive to the top of twin peaks
Golden Gate Park is pretty cool (not near the golden gate bridge)
Golden Gate bridge is a must see.
Taddich Grill - Oldest restaurant in SF. No reservations, not fancy. seafood dishes mainly
Yank Sing restaurant for dim sum its not in chintown but its excellent chinese dim sum
I would wander around chinatown and just take in the atmosphere and smells.
I would also wander around north beach and get some coffee or cappuccino at a real italian type coffee place. Thats where the beatnics hung around.
Haight Ashbury is hippieish...its worth a quick look just to say you saw it. good restaurants all around.
Pacific Heights is also good for people watching and wandering around.

de young museum
cliff house
legion of honor
zoo
aquarium
crissy field
ocean beach

if you want specific restaurant rec's for different food, happy to offer.......

misc nearby (if you are interested, i'll give specific restaurant and winery rec's):
sausalito
tiburon
carmel and/or monterey
sonoma and/or napa
jack london square

like grabbing a drink at Pier 23

italian:

fior d' italia

firenze by night

rose pistola

worth getting out of north beach... pan e vino

Asain:

yank sing

golden river (geary)

misc places have excellent dim sum on lower clement (wing lee for one)

for asian crab- ppq dungeness

hakka

if you want to be near china town... city view

for burmese:

mandalay

burma star

burma superstar

misc:

A&O Asian kitchen- asian fusian (love this place)

el castellino (mission), just a taco stand but excellent

cancun- mexican

picaro- spanish

pier 23- misc (great roasted crab)

kuletos- seafood

le central- french

le colonial- french/vietnamese

cliff house (great view)- seafood

there is an alleyway near union sq called belden place. i like all of the restaurants down there: plouf, b44 stand out

How's the aquarium?  I also just noticed there's a beer fest going on Saturday, but I think my wife would kick me in the balls if I suggested going while on our mini vacation.

The Steinhart in golden gate park is nice.  The is also an aquarium of the bay near pier 39 which more modern but more limited.  over priced but fun.

Good info. I searched for aquarium and figured the Aquarium of the Bay was the only one.  Thanks.

Memorable things from when I used to frequent the area:

Sunset at the Cliff House

Irish Coffees at the Buena Vista

Jawing with the hookers on Post St

Crazy stipper shows at Mitchell Brothers

Dungeness crabs at the wharf

Jamming with the guys playing the blues Union Square

Napa wineries - Coppola, Mondavi and Cakebread

Banging my ex wife in a fitting room at St Helena outlets

Staying the weekend after a biz trip and repeatedly banging Elizabeth, my bosses secretary at my hotel in Japantown

Mitchell Brothers, aka O'Farrell Theater, should be on every hetero man's bucket list.  To call it a strip club is like saying Mike Trout is pretty good at baseball.

Also we are missing a few can sizes here.  😢

I've heard the tenderloin district is nice.  Unfortunately things are pretty pricey and most places don't accept cards so you'll have to carry a large amount of cash on you when you go there.*

*My advice should not be followed.

Hah. Yeah, I've heard about the Tenderloin before. Thx for the tip.

Though, near Filmore and California there are a lot of good restaurants. Eliza's and elite cafe come to mind.

Also, tenderloin is close to Japantown. Many good restaurants and shops.

Ex wife was 34 D, Elizabeth Stewart was probably 34 C.  Girls at Mitchell Bros were all shapes and sizes.

BART from SFO to downtown worked great. Enjoying some free wine in the hotel while we figure out where to eat.

Haven't seen any bum sh1t yet, but the first thing we saw in the Powell St station was a dude with no shoes just sleeping right in the main hallway.

Main difference from Seattle so far is people use umbrellas here.
