Elon 0 Posted April 17, 2006 Okay, I'm board today I admit it, and i want to spice things up. I know I was hating a lot last year on Alex Smith, and big hands himself, hasn't done anything to change my mind on him. So, if the 49ers are on the clock and Vince Young is available, do you take him. Let's think this through. If Alex Smith becomes a good QB, you could trade one of the two for a first round pick in the future. If he continues to play poorly, you don't have to waste too much time on him. I know people are going to scream the 49ers have a lot of needs. Which I don't disagree with, but unless they were to trade down, they would only really be able to address one need, and they're biggest need is still QB. A running QB can make a bad O-Line look better. Frank Gore has some potential at RB, and Antonio Bryant is an underrated WR. I know the defense still is bad. football_scooter 0 Posted April 17, 2006 not just no, but HELL no. Alex Smith is WAY too inexperienced to call a bust - he's been developing and has spent every day of the offseason at camp working his arse off. With the improvements to the O-Line, and what is expected to be a quality draft, QB is not a need. The running game will benefit the most from a competent O-Line, and having an NFL caliber TE to block and as a dump off option. What the Niners need to focus on in this draft the most is the secondary and defense. O-Line depth will help, and potentially a TE like Vernon Davis. I'm not as down on VY as some from the ridiculously poor test score, but he's a luxury the Niners simply cannot afford.
Force of Two 0 Posted April 17, 2006 Elon...you and I have discussed this and still dont feel any different...though I dont see much from Alex Smith I dont see them even remotely entertaining the thought of taking Young. That teams has needs all over the place and cant afford to make a mistake in the 1st round this year.
GeminiV 0 Posted April 17, 2006 If the Niners could choose between Smith and Young without spending a pick, I'd still choose Smith.

If they would take Young or either of the other QB's with the no.6 pick, I would be livid. They could go in any other direction in the draft OTHER than QB. They just paid Alex Smith a $20+ million signing bonus, why would they another a huge signing bonus? Tempting, I hear ya but not a chance this happens. Smith needs a couple more years before we can declare him a bust.
ellisonb11 0 Posted April 17, 2006 yea they wont take vince...they now believe that smith is their man for the franchise. its almost clear that they wont take vince young.
Barnaby Wilde 0 Posted April 17, 2006 If the 49ers are on the clock and Vince is there, then they entertain all offers from other teams to move up and get another pick or two, then fill a need with whatever pick they get for the #6...or, they stay put and grab Davis, or whomever they are thinking of at that spot. Elon 0 Posted April 18, 2006 I'm moved by the support I'm seeing for Alex Smith. Force of Two, to turn your own words around you, there is no price to high for a franchise QB.
SoloMatisse 0 Posted April 18, 2006 as much as I think Alex Smith will be a complete and total bust in the NFL, he hasnt been given nearly enough time to prove otherwise. the Niners appear to have far greater issues than replacing their #1 overall pick from a year ago. Of course if you already think you have one that there is a price that is too high....the exception to every rule
