News: Newsday reports that the Jets are now showing an interest in Maryland TE Vernon Davis, who is expected to be a top-10 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and is considered to be in the mold of Antonio Gates. This news comes out the same day that the 49ers, who were previously interested in Davis, are now thinking about drafting Texas CB/S Michael Huff at No. 6.

 

Analysis: Davis could be the first tight end taken in the top five since 1972. It looks like Davis is going to go high and fit in with an offense right away, making him a potential stud Fantasy option. He's going to get drafted in every Fantasy league no matter what, but the potential is there for him to be taken with a middle-round pick if he lands in a favorable situation. In dynasty league drafts, Davis will be a top five pick, possibly as high as third overall.

This would make all the sense in the world.....if this were opposite day.

 

What a bizarre pick that would be - of all the needs this team has, is TE really one of them? They're gonna make VD a top 3 pick?

In theory, I agree. The Jets should be able to fill a need with this pick that plays like a great starter for them. In practice, Davis is one of the best players in the draft in terms of skill and remaining potential. If you can get a player with a chance to dominate at the position, especially when so many 1st rounders fail to meet expectations, well...why not?

The other is that they seem to have far more glaring needs with the loss of Abraham...I would think Williams would be a much better pick for them since they will need a blue chip DE.

 

I just look at that team and see far more glaring needs than TE - but I agree with you, Davis looks like a superstar in the making...it's part of why I wouldn't mind the Niners drafting him.

 

I guess I understand why some have been saying the Niners have too many needs to take a TE at 6....because that's what keeps coming into my head about the Jets.

True about Jolley. I saw some people say Williams might not be a great fit in a 3-4, where the LB is more the sack artist than the DE. That might be a reason. I wonder if the Jets wind up trading down for more picks. Honestly, I haven't looked much at draft needs by team (more focused on evaluating individual players--an understatement) but I would hate to be a QB on the Jets with a sputter running game, a new head coach/system, and a diminished o-line. Let Pennington/Fiedler manage it as they build a core...I dunno...

Jolley is signed through 2007, and is being paid (I think) $3.8 mil? Might be only $795K against the cap, so maybe the 3,8 is his total contract...

Let's say the Jets are staying at #4 and Bush, Leinart, and Williams are off the board, leaving them with Ferguson as the top rated player. Suppose they want a play making stud to be in Vervon Davis. I wouldn't be mad at the pick. The man can play.

That would be an awful pick. E. Mangini would be public enemy #1 in NY. Too many great prospects available. We gave up a 1st RD pick for Jolly, which was a dumb move but he will play much better this year.

 

Here fishy, fishy, fishy.... We are trying to move down. There is no way they are picking a TE. Period.

They would take a QB if they wanted to waste a 1st RD pick as you can never have too many QBs.

Vernon "Duke" Davis...I scouted that game where he took a reverse on a kickoff and gained close to 30-yards--his speed is jaw dropping for his size. He's so fast, you don't realize he's that big.

Why don't Jets fans want a QB? Pennington was critcized for having a weak arm before he busted his rotator cuff. If I was a Jets fan I would want Leinart no questions asked. He has the potential to be a franchise QB.

I think Leinart or Young would be good selections for the Jets. Maybe more Young because he's big and athletic....after Pennington, the Jets should get someone durable.

 

But Williams is the stud here - Jets fans are right...Ramsey might not be the 2nd coming, but he'll steward the offense decent enough...they need a DE and they're in a position to get him.

I agree Williams is a good pick for the jets, it just seems like many jets fans really don't want a qb. Think that would be a good pick too.

I love this guy! Okay, not that kind of love. But really, I think Davis is the offensive equivalent of A.J. Hawk in this draft. He is the safest offensive pick, IMHO. Both are physical freaks, and their attitude and intensity are unquestionable. If the Packers could have only two guys in this draft, I would want them to be Davis and Hawk. It's a shame the Pack will only have a shot at one of them.

This will not happen. The Jets' draft board is as follows:

 

1. Reggie Bush

2a. Matt Lienart

2b. Mario Williams

3. D'Brickshaw Ferguson

 

Unless the Jets trade out of the 4th spot, they will not take Davis

well scooter, if you want a positive spin, heres one, actually two

1) they wont be stupid and trade their 2 1sts

2) it wont be a QB

 

i think after trading for Ramsey they should at least give him a shot to do SOMETHING and id rather them not go for a QB 1st round

while Williams or Ferguson would both be great and what id like the most(Ferguson more so) Davis would kill two birds with one stone adding something to the offense and also being able to play as an extra blocker, hopefully

 

i loved that highlight reel but didnt see a lot of him blocking, anyone shed some light on that?

If Mario Williams goes to the Saints as rumored, I wouldn't fault the Jets for taking Davis. His potential is phenomenal. They are concerned that Leinart cannot throw in the weather there. If you saw Matt in the wind against UCLA...

 

You would understand the concern. It's also one of the reasons they are enamored with Cutler, who appears to be an all weather QB. Young would be fine too. But you don't draft Jay that early, and I think this rumor is based on the odd possibility the draft leaves goes Bush, Mario, Young. So, if you can't trade down, it's Davis or D'Brick. I know the world is in love with Ferguson, and he looks terrific to me too, but Davis is an absolute beast.

 

We'll see.

He is a stud, but I think they are better off with M Williams, AJ Hawk or Ferguson if they decide not to draft a qb.
