J-Money 4 Posted May 2, 2006 Is he really gonna play safety? or are they seriously considering moving him to cb?
t.j 35 Posted May 2, 2006 They aren't going to move him to CB. They have 5 CBs that they like that should all get lots of playing time (Washington, Asomugha, Routt, Poole, Starks). He's best-suited as a free safety but the Raiders probably have more need at strong safety. I believe he'll play both. Art Shell talked about his ability to play all the secondary spots so they like his versatility. He will probably line up in man-to-man coverage at times when the offense puts a lot of receivers on the field, he will probably man up on the tight end at times as well. Stuart Schweigert is a young FS who started most of the year, and Derrick Gibson is a former first round pick at strong safety who has been injured most of his careeer. That's pretty much all they've got at safety, because Darnell Bing is going to move to outside linebacker, and the returning backups stink. So from an IDP standpoint, he'll be a safety, and he'll get a chance to make plays. I couldn't tell you yet if they plan to play him every down or if they plan to maybe rotate the top three safeties. But he's a guy who's capable of setting up a defense on the field from a communications standpoint, so he could definitely see a lot of time.
Chemboy 0 Posted May 2, 2006 I would guess he is a starting safety with Stuart. Gibson does not hit that hard and gets burned a lot. I am guessing they go to more of a coverage package most of the time and play him with Fabian, Asomugha, Schweigert and forget about the SS vs FS "positions". He may also play nickel back with Gibson as the other safety. Nothing they do can be as bad a last years DBs.
