Poor W and gang. The PR campaign is backfiring. First Laura puts foot in mouth, now Rumsfeld tries to deflect blame onto the troops for the WMD fiasco.

The chickens are coming home to roost. B)

Rumsfeld heckled, accused of lying at speech

3 protesters escorted out while defense secretary speaks about Iraq war

ATLANTA - Protesters repeatedly interrupted Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld during a speech Thursday, and one man, a former CIA analyst, accused him of lying about Iraq prewar intelligence in an unusually vociferous display of antiwar sentiment.

“Why did you lie to get us into a war that caused these kind of casualties and was not necessary?” asked Ray McGovern, the former analyst, during a question-and-answer session.

“I did not lie,” shot back Rumsfeld, who waved off security guards ready to remove McGovern from the hall at the Southern Center for International Studies.

ZAHN: Essentially, what he told you is: I never said exactly where the weapons of mass destruction were. I was referring to, we had a pretty darn good idea where the sites were. ... Do you buy what he said today?

MCGOVERN: His words [in 2003] were: "We know where -- where the WMD are. They're near Tikrit and Baghdad, and north, south, east, and west of there." That's a direct quote.

And when he (Rumsfeld) used that wonderful non sequitur by looking at the uniformed personnel in the front row and saying: "Well, they went in with protective gear; they certainly thought there were weapons of mass destruction there." Well, my goodness, of course, they did. Because you, Donald Rumsfeld, told them that they were there.

Thousands of chemical suits found at Iraqi positions. Gas masks abandoned in trenches.

The items, strewn across the desert road to Baghdad, could be clues that Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard is plotting to unleash a deadly chemical strike.

-----

While the United States believes Iraq has chemical and biological weapons, there is no way to know whether Hussein would unleash them. He didn't during the 1991 Gulf War -- when it is known that he possessed them.

"They know very well that the coalition forces don't have chemical weapons with them so the only reason the Iraqi troops would have that kind of equipment is because they plan to use the weapons themselves," said Terence Taylor, who led U.N. weapons inspections in Iraq in the 1990s. "There is really no other reason for fighting forces to wear special equipment."
