mmmmm...beer 807 Posted May 5, 2006 So I've searching in ernest for this vehicle I want to buy. It's a 2005 and the dealerships around here have it for about 20-24k. I've seen dealers on ebay from say Texas, Chicago have the same vehicle for 5-7k less. They seem to have great seller ratings... Reviews from other seller seem great. I'm just really leary about buying online without driving the vehicle. I'm up here in Oregon and it I really wouldn't be anything for me to buy a plane ticket to go get the vehicle once it's purchased where ever that is, but I probably won't go any further east then say Texas. What do you guys think? Would you do it? Oh and if I'm buying a 2005... would it be better to wait till the end of summer when all the '07 are out... the prices will drop? I'd buy used... but possibly new if there's still some new '05's some dealer has on the lot not sold yet.
kraziness 0 Posted May 5, 2006 I don't think the prices will drop on a used 2005 when the 2007's come out. If you're buying new, the price will go down when the 2007's come out... but then again, if the car is new, why would you be worried about buying online? If it's a new car (or claims to be in "like new" condition) I'd buy online and if it wasn't as advertised, I'd back out. If it's used, I'd be really hesitant to buy until I saw exactly how bad that scratch is, and exactly how the transmission feels, etc.

Buyer agrees to pay remaining balance due (plus applicable fees and taxes) within 5 days of the close of the auction. All financial transactions must be completed before delivery of the vehicle. So... unless I want to drop a Ger.... it'd have trouble backing out.
kraziness 0 Posted May 5, 2006 Yeah... about backing out:So... unless I want to drop a Ger.... it'd have trouble backing out. But you'd only be backing out if the car wasn't as advertised... it seems to me that the deposit should be (some sort of) refundable if the car is in pieces when you go to pick it up. Giants Fan 85 Posted May 5, 2006 I did. Was a real good deal though ... see I didn't win the auction. Jeep. Still got the interior and soft top from that Jeep in my Jeep. Was $3200 and like a grand to ship from New Hampshire to Arizona and I scavenged it, swapped parts ... put a lot of work into it, cheap Maco paintjob, and I prety much broke even. Lotta crap out there, I was lucky to buy from the original owner.
joneo 556 Posted May 5, 2006 I bought my 1982 Porsche 911 from someone in Arizona. Worked out fine for me. I would "steer" clear of any "project cars" that need "a little work". .

Yeah... it would be a '05 or newer, and definately not a "fixer upper".
Giants Fan 85 Posted May 5, 2006 Try emailing people after the auction is over ... and see if maybe the buyer flaked ... which is common. Offer less, because if the buyer flaked ... they should get back the entire listing fee and at least don't have to pay a percentage to Ebay ... and you already know the price. Make sure you know them real well, before you do anything. Lotta scammers out there.
mmmmm...beer 807 Posted May 5, 2006 Ok... here's a for instance. This vehicle around Portland/Seattle at a dealership would be about 24k... it's got leather.. the dvd... the 3.8 liter engine.... so. I could buy it now from Texas for 19250... oh and about 250 bucks for some fees they charge. But that... with a 175 plane ticket... and I'd be saving myself about 5k for just the cost of gas money on the way home Car Example

SUXBNME 1,499 Posted May 5, 2006 Big chance buying off ebay without driving or having it inspected first.. You wouldn't believe what some of the "prep" guys do to some of these cars to get them on the lot.. I've seen everything from cords hanging out of tires on the inside (where you can't see), To power steering fluid put in the brake master cylinder to "top it off". $$$ The only thing you can do to protect yourself that I can think of is a "car fax" history report. Good luck
jerryskids 6,790 Posted May 5, 2006 I would personally never do it, unless there was an ironclad way out for you.

I'll just have to wait for something closer to home Lots of people do it, I'm just kinda chickensh1t about buying stuff like that online that I haven't seen. Heck, I think the only thing I've ever bought on ebay was a wood barbie dollhouse for my daughter (and it is awesome, if your into that).
