Favorite REAL punk song?

Recommended Posts

Was California Uber Alles 1981? Believe it or not ... I used to consider the Dead Kennedy's "commercial" when I was a teenager.

How about ... maybe the oldest Ramones tune ... like 1975 ... Down in The Basement.

Hey Dady-Oh

I don't wanna go

Down in the basement

There's somethin' down there

I don't wanna go

Hey, Romeo, there's somethin' down there

I don't wanna go

Down in the basement!

I know, I know .... New York Dolls .... but the Ramones really made it happen.

There's a rumor ... might be true ... that Malcolm and Johnny saw a Ramones gig in NYC and said to them afterwards ... "We are starting a band like yours in England ... called the Sex Pistols."

Dunno if that's true ... but that's the rumor.

Rotten didn't hit the States 'til the ill-fated '78 whirlwind tour. Malcolm was here in 73, at a clothing showcase, where he struck up his relationship with The Dolls. He then managed them for a bit ... the 'Red Patent Leather' debacle ... the death knell for The Dolls ... which was a blessing of sorts, because it freed up Thunders to form the Heartbreakers ... which leads to a song fitting this category: "Chinese Rocks".

I'll offer up a few more ...

"Sonic Reducer" -Deadboys

"Orgasm Addict" -Buzzcocks

"New Rose"-The Damned

"Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment"-Ramones

"O Bondage, Up Yours!"- X-Ray Spex

"Belsen Was A Gas"- Pistols

"Right To Work"-Chelsea

"Dogs Of Straw"- Stiff Little Fingers

"Blank Generation"- Richard Hell

"Bullet"- The Misfits

"Where Have All The Boot Boys Gone?"- Slaughter and the Dogs

"Stranded"- The Saints

"I'm Alive" - 999

"Flares and Slippers" -Cockney Rejects

"Kick Out The Jams"- MC5

"I Hate Music" - The Replacements

"English Civil War"- The Clash

.... etc.

Been a long time since I heard The Buzzcocks mentioned. There was very little Arizona punk. Even by 1985. In chronological order it went:

Civil Death (Prolly the first "punk band" in all of Arizona)

Al Perry and the Cattle (still plays)

U.P.S. (Useless Pieces of Shiat ... almost famous.)

What Went Wrong

Prolly several others I forgot. Did a lot of drugs back then.

Great call with Bullet...easily my favorite Misifits song. I would also offer up Bad Religion's "Voice of God is Government" (if we're talikng 1980).

i don't know if Elvis Costello is considered 'punk,' but his debut came out in 78 or 79, and he had some great singles in that era. i've been listening to him a lot lately.
