Didn't France win it playing in France in 1998? I think the host team has one the world cup several times but I can't remember the teams offhand.

Brazil won it in 98 and 02

Wasn't the world cup in the USA in 98?

Gerard Muller is the top scorer in World Cup history with 14 goals.

Salenko of Russia scored 5 goals in a match during the 1994 World Cup.

A ton of host countries have won. Not sure if this is all of them but I know Italy, Uraguay, West Germany, England, Argentina and France all won at home.

I found different....

* Largest margin of victory: Hungary 9-0 South Korea, 1954; Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire 1974; Hungary 10-1 El Salvador, 1982

* Most goals scored by one player in a game: Oleg Salenko scored 5 goals for Russia vs Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup.

* Fastest goal from kickoff: Hakan Şükür, 11 seconds, Turkey vs South Korea, 2002

* Most World Cup tournament appearances: Antonio Carbajal (Mexico, 1950-1966) and Lothar Matthäus (West Germany and Germany, 1982-1998), 5

* Most World Cup match appearances: Lothar Matthäus, 25

* Most goals scored: Gerd Müller (West Germany 1970-1974), 14

* Most goals scored in one tournament: Just Fontaine (France), 13, 1958

* Oldest player to score a goal: Roger Milla, 42 years and 39 days, Cameroon vs Russia, 1994

* Most goals scored in a World Cup qualifier: 31, Australia, Australia 31-0 American Samoa, 2002 qualification.

He played for France, so assume they made it to most of the world cups back then. Not sure why he didn't ever score again.

31-0... in a focking soccer game!!! I don't know who should be more embarrassed, Australia for piling on or Samoa for giving up 31.

They should have invoked that new college football rule.

if you win by too much, coach can be suspended

What the hell is this???? Homeless Worldcup? Do they get a cheeseburger if they score a goal?

do they get to shower or wear shoes?

I think Edjr's question was "Who scored the most goals in a single world cup?" I took that to mean who scored the most goals over the course of the entire tournament, not who scored the most goals in a single game.

that's what that said. Same guy, one tournement, but 13. Not sure what is right, that's just what it says.

eta: I was also just pointing out another fact that I thought was pretty crazy. The other was in bold below that also.

I wanted to know one world cup and one career.
