14 team leagues - Which draft spots to go after/avoid

Recommended Posts

A lot of this has been discussed for the 12 team leagues a lot already, but with 14 teams, things change significantly. We're talking serpentine draft, by the way.

A top-3 pick still looks good. You get slightly less value obviously on the 2nd & 3rd than with 12 teams, but you're still in pretty good shape.

If I can't get one of those top 3 slots, and I were in a 12 teamer, I might skip picking one of the middle slots and head to the end, knowing that at 12 & 13, I can still get two good RBs, RB-WR, or (although it's a lot more dangerous -- I doubt I'd do it even in a 12 teamer) WR-WR. With 14 teams though, that last slot doesn't seem nearly as attractive as in a 12 team league. WR-WR seems out of the question for me (wouldn't be able to get your first RB until picks 56 & 57). I'm wondering if you're at the 12-13-14 slot in a 14 teamer, if you're almost forced to go RB-RB, since there won't be much left at RB at pick 54-55-56 if you don't go RB-RB in Round 1 & 2.

Which raises the question -- is it best in a 14 teamer to just get the earliest draft slot possible? The closer to 1 you get, the more flexibility you seem to have in the 2nd round and the better talent you end up with in my mocks.

Thoughts? (1) What draft spots do you want / avoid in a 14 teamer, and why?

(2) Also, what thoughts do you have about draft strategy from those slots?

I have the 1st pick in a 14 teamer. I think the spots to avoid are 8 and below......especially when it comes to RB. My strategy is took take LJ and hope that I can get either 2 good WRs back to back or 1 good WR and a flier on a potential sleeper at RB.

I would prefer to be in the top 4 or the bottom 3.

I had the 8th pick in my league...and had Tiki fall all the way down to that spot where I couldn't justify passing him up. Then in the second and third rounds I picked up TO, and Chris Chambers. In the 4th I drafted Jamal Lewis. Later on I grabbed Benson, Gore, Dayne (I've since picked up Mike Bell). I figure between that group of 5 running backs, one of them should step up to be a good #2 RB to pair with Tiki. And waiting till round 4 to take the second one set me up to have a great group of receivers, which will be rounded out by either Michael Clayton, Antonio Bryant, or David Boston as my #3.
