I gotta vent ... older, kinda know it all student

She works hard, so her work is good. I had her in a class before and she's very critical ... and that's not a bad thing in this industry ... but she's unhappy, vocally at times. About 45 years old, wants to start her own marketing/consulting business. I try and give my students lab time where we can have 1 on 1 direction. The reading is the reading, and after the mid-term I was going over the answers for the mid-term with the class.

 

#7 ... the 4 F's of Magazine design ... the answer is Form, Function, uhhh.. Frames and ....

 

Another Student: Format

 

Me: Yeah ... format

 

45 year old chick: Did you ever talk about that in class?

 

Me: No. As a matter of fact, (she rolled her eyes) I don't think it's important at all. But there is a big section on it in the reading, and it's a way of finding out if you've done the reading or not.

 

She had 9 out of 10 for 90% and didn't even try and answer that question. It's one chapter ... but the truth is, I don't care much about the friggin book, but if you didn't read it, you wont know the answer. You make the deadlines. That's the truth of it ... you make the friggin deadlines, whatever it takes. There's 2 constraints ... I tell my students, "I love it when my clients say 'Can we do this?' and my answer is always the same ... 'We can do anything, if you have the time and the money.' and that's the only thing holding back any design ... time and money. You buy the book, and do the reading ... you might get 100% on the final.

 

It's rediculous for me to try and scold her ... but I gave partial credit there. She wants ... my shiksakock ... yeah, she's Jewish and she has no idea I'm circum ... part Jewish. I need good numbers ... good reviews from this class. Yeah ... I already thought of the soup ... but some Jews wont eat shellfish.
