*** Official AirRam package Contribution thread *** IT's THERE!

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know AirRam is in Afghanistan [or somewhere over there] serving his country and we sent a 40 lb. package of crap over the Summer to him.

Prior thread which showed the 'goodies'.

Regardless of what you believe politically about why and all, it would be a great thing to actually pitch in and support a fellow American serving us this way. Everybody always says they support the troops and all, now's the time to step up.

Many Geeks said they missed the last one and would step up for the next one. Well it's time to step up.

Rusty Syringes [not his real name] has volunteered to act as a collection point for all sorts of items we Geeks can gather and send them to AirRam. Thank you in advance Rusty.

Paraphrasing Rusty's prior e-mail [parts edited as I am the editor not him and he added a nice twist]:

What we should do is have people send me stuff that's useful for a soldier but yet kind of unique to the Geek's respective community.

For example, we make Texjoy seasoning here in Buttmont, and they'd kill for that kind of thing over here, so I'd include some kind of Texjoy package.

And just mail it in a big box to Air Ram.

=================================================

Below are parts of a prior e-mail from Mrs. AirRam regarding the subject:

Mrs. AirRam wrote:

You can tell people that he can also receive microwavable meals which he would love. Ramen and noodle type stuff is good too. I attached a list of things he would probably love to have.

BTW, he is also doing work for the schools out there too, handing out school supplies. I'm sure pencils, pens, and paper would be neat. Even crayons and craft type stuff too...kites at the dollar store, etc.

=================================================

List of items per Mrs. AirRam:

AirRam's list of things he would feel honored to receive:

Here’s a website that can tell you what is prohibited and it adds some more good ideas like phone cards. He purchased an Afghan cell phone (I wonder if he got a camel as his sign-on gift?) so he likes to use phone cards to call home. If you’re interested in getting him a phone card, I am in the process of asking him which one works with his cell company. Some companies are strange about that.

http://singleparents.about.com/cs/a/CarePackages03.htm

1. A simple letter that keeps him up to date with what’s going on in your life. Maybe even a local news article that would make him laugh.

2. Photos of you and your family…he would LOVE that.

3. The man loves his protein powder. As of right now, they are transporting food from 3 miles away in a truck. So, who knows what kind of shape the food is in by the time it gets there. Protein Powder- Optimum 100% Whey (Either Cookies N Cream/Vanilla/Chocolate in the 2 lb is fine) http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/opt.htm (I usually have it sent to myself and then I mail it. They charge a lot for international orders.)

4. Magazines or book that keeps him up to date on all the stocks/economy.

5. Health magazines (No Maxim or anything of the sort. He will get in trouble.)

6. DVD’s- Typical guy movies with action, etc. He would also like some DVD’s from the show “Medium”. He never gets to see it, even at home since it’s on so late. We still haven’t been able to find the series DVD.

**Email me before you get a DVD and let me know what title you want to send so you’re not sending something he already has.

7. Computer games that he can play on his laptop. Surprisingly enough, he likes war games.

8. **AAFES gift cards- So he can buy food that doesn’t come in an MRE. Here’s the website you can go to: http://www.certifichecks.com/ and click on Military Gift Certificates He can use these wherever he goes.

9. Snacks- The guy will eat anything. Don’t send anything that can melt. I’m sure hard candy is welcome.

10. Any food that you make…he’ll eat it.

11. Books that you find interesting…he likes psycho type thrillers…don’t ask me why. J

12. Religious books that make you think about the history of the Bible. Or, DVD’s of the sort.

13. Ground coffee- He usually drinks a medium blend.

==========================================================

If you want to be anonymous and just send some bucks to cover postage or whatever, feel free.

[Last time the money actually made it through.]

Thanks for anything you all will do here. We can make somebody's days a little easier over there.

Sincerely,

Ravens 03

I think I have gotten my wife's agreement to do this again.

She did one for Rusty's BIL. She's a 2nd grade teacher and had her class bring in stuff in which I sent to Qutar. Focker cost about $80 to send two boxes. She's reluctant, because of some stuff that just happened at school for a fund raiser, but I think she'll come through. At minimum, I'll pull off some stuff here to send.

Cool.

Since he has a laptop, he can play mp3s. I'll make up a bunch of mp3 CDs. AirRam, you have about a thousand tunes coming your way. :pointstosky:

I'll also send some Men's Health and Rolling Stone magazines.

Thanks again, AirRam.

You people make me proud to be an American and a member of this demented club. It brings a tear to my eye while thinking we can come together as strangers bringing good will to a geek thousands of miles away who is in harms way.

I've picked up a box of mixed canned seafood from here Salmon, Smoked Salmon, Smoked Oysters, Clam Chowder, etc ... Great snacks to enjoy while watching the New Years Day Bowls. Just tell Ram it's from "Arctic", and to invite a couple Canucks LOL.

SAWilson, Shipping from Can. is getting brutal now so I'm going to bring it down Mon when I go to the game. Tips on shipping or I can drop it off with you.

Ram, Thanks for takin' it to them over there so I don't have to worry every day I go to work back here. A lot of us back here are  , and don't really understand what it takes to get on the field. Not even sure if I do, but Thanks again. Pass this on to your mates 'cause it's for all of them as well.

I got your email and responded. Totally cool if you want me to send your stuff with my coffee, we would just need to find a place to hook up when you and the wife come for the game. I also gave you my number in the email so you can call me too and we can coordinate this, if not, I'll call you.

Hi you guys!

This is AirRam's wife as I cannot remember my fftoday login info and I'm exhausted at the moment. AirRam is still traveling back to his remote village in Afghanistan. (It takes 6 days for him to return...unbelievable.)

Before I go any further, I just wanted to let you know that it has been rough over there. I won't go into details but just know that those men and women need your daily prayers. My husband has been a hero in many eyes and has saved lives by being the badass that he is. So, from the Ram family, we thank you for acknowledging our heroes. I'm so proud of him. We're winning...trust me.

5 more months...we're in the homestretch and can't wait for his full return. We had him home for 2 weeks in November and AirRamJr ran right up to him and hugged him at the airport. It's a moment I'll never forget. He left last Tuesday and it's hard when Jr runs into the bedroom in the morning asking for "daddy" and I honestly don't know what to say to a 2 year old other than he'll be back real soon...real soon.

This board is a wonderful escape for him and your thoughtfulness humbles us more than you'll ever know.

Ravens emailed me today and asked if I could field some questions:

1) Used books are fine

2) Music is great...he has an ipod and loves to work out with it

Here is an updated list of things...the school stuff is ok but he won't be able to hand it out until Feb when the schools start up again. So, if you can hold off until Feb, that would be great. They can't store a lot of stuff for the schools. Although, he's trying to get one up and running by next April.

Also, he loves homemade food and food that is already in a microwaveable bowl. They can't wash dishes with the contaminated water so they just use plastic forks, etc.

1. Red Bull- These guys love caffeine.

2. Cup O Noodles

3. Chocolate Pudding- (The “full of fat” kind and put in a ziploc since they can explode)

4. Flavored Almonds- Smokehouse and Lime N Chile are their favorites.

5. Beef Jerky

6. Ground Coffee

7. Microwavable bowls of ravioli and pasta

8. Microwavable rice packets

9. Flavored tuna in a vacuum sealed package

10. Tubes of peanuts (when they're on missions they don't like to touch the food with their gloves which could be contaminated...or, in his words, "Afghan-ed")

11. Cheese N Crackers (packaged)

12. Movies- Funny or Horror

13. You can send chocolate stuff until the end of February or so too.

14. Boxed chocolate milk since they don't get milk over there.

Love and PEACE,

MrsAirRam...wife of the BEST husband EVER

Wow. First let me say my thoughts and prayers and with them, AND with you and your family. I can't even imagine being in your position with your children and such and I have a HUGE amount of respect for you as well. It takes a strong person to keep her head up and be strong for her family while her husband is away saving lives of others. You are an amazing person yourself.

There are some really amazing people on this board and I hope that we all can come together and send some great items to him and the troops he is with for Christmas.

Keep strong, and know that he will be back soon and he is fighting for the lives of many many people. Again, I respect you greatly and you and the troops are in my thoughts and prayers daily. Thank you for posting this.

Be sure to only send things Rusty and his male lover and his nephews can use.

Or cash of course.

This is kind of like the DauntesInferno scam a few years back.

Except Rusty is pulling this again.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Can the board moderators explain why they have penned this knowing AirRam's IP address is in Texas.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. YOU ALL ARE FREAKING IDIOTS!

Holy crap. I just got back to Qalat last night and got a message from my Shula league mates about this thread. I have to say I'm floored. You folks are great. Please know that anything sent is going to be shared first with my team and with the rest of the soldiers and airmen on the compound. So you're time, money, and effort will go first to soldiers and airmen who, like MrsRam mentioned, are in harms way almost every day. I'll have pics posted so you can see your stuff over here in Afghanistan.

Again, wow, and thanks. I do appreciate your efforts and thoughtfulness.

Massive thumbsup to Ravens and Rustor for starting this up again and to the Geeks who've been so great to my family and I.
