cmh6476 1,025 Posted December 7, 2006 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2689724 I'm gonna have hella-options for the geek homer league next year Updated: Dec. 7, 2006, 11:59 AM ET Royals, Meche agree to five-year deal The Gil Meche sweepstakes are over, and the Kansas City Royals are the winners. ESPN's Steve Phillips reported Thursday that the Royals and Meche have agreed to terms on a 5-year deal, pending a physical. Financial details were not immediately available. Earlier Thuesday, it was reported that Royals and Meche were working towards a four-year, $45 million deal. Meche, a six-year veteran, has a career record of 55-44 and a 4.65 earned-run average, all with the Seattle Mariners. He was 11-8 for the Mariners last season with a 4.48 ERA. The Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs also were in the running for Meche. they also let fatass go: More good news.... The Kansas City Royals have selected right-handed pitcher Joakim Soria from the Triple-A Portland roster of the San Diego Padres organization with the second pick in today’s Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. To make room for Soria on the Royals 40-man roster, the Royals released right-handed pitcher Runlevys Hernandez.

ManUtd 0 Posted December 7, 2006 The Royals spending is going to ruin baseball. I say the Cubs are more guilty of that this year. They act like they're the Reb Sux or Yankme's
cmh6476 1,025 Posted December 7, 2006 The Royals spending is going to ruin baseball. the royals now have 40% of their payroll wrapped up in 2 players Royals reach agreement with Meche on five-year deal By BOB DUTTON The Kansas City Star LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Royals provided a blockbuster conclusion to the winter meetings Thursday by reaching agreement with free-agent pitcher Gil Meche on a five-year deal. “Gil Meche is a guy who we feel fits into what we’re trying to do here for the long term,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “We felt he has the best raw stuff among all of the free agents out there.” Specific financial details were not known, but the package is believed to approach $55 million to $60 million. The richest contract in club history is Mike Sweeney’s current five-year deal for $55 million, which expires after next season. “There’s a risk,” Moore admitted. “It would be nice if we could all predict the future, but we can’t. Anytime you sign a player, you expect him to do well. “In Gil Meche, we got a guy with stuff who is the youngest guy in the group (of free-agent pitchers). We feel great about this.” Meche, 28, also attracted strong interest from the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays after going 11-8 with a 4.48 ERA last season in 32 starts for the Seattle Mariners. The deal is contingent on Meche passing a physical examination, which is tentatively scheduled for this week, and caps a determined effort this week by the Royals to strengthen their rotation. The Royals also pursued free-agent Miguel Batista by making a three-year offer for $24 million. Club officials indicated they now believe Batista has bigger offers and is likely to sign elsewhere. Meche is 55-44 with a 4.65 ERA in a six-year career spent entirely with the Mariners. He had a career-high 15 victories in 2003 and would presumably head a rotation projected to include Odalis Perez, Luke Hudson Jorge De La Rosa and either Brian Bannister or Zack Greinke. The Royals obtained Bannister on Wednesday from the New York Mets in a trade for reliever Ambiorix Burgos. They also selected another potential rotation candidate in Joakim Soria from San Diego in the Rule 5 draft after clearing roster space by releasing Runelvys Hernandez. Another roster move must be made when the Meche signing becomes official. “I think we’ve improve our organization,” Moore said. “It was a tough decision (to release Hernandez), but we felt the evaluation we had on Soria made him a better option for our long-term success. “We traded away a young power arm in Burgos, and you hate to move guys like that. But we got a guy back in Bannister who has a chance to compete in the rotation. “So we improved ourselves and we’re still working on some things. I think we’re going to continue to improve ourselves.” Meche made just $3.7 million in 2006 but benefited from a soaring free-agent market. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/16186513.htm
Mungwater 597 Posted December 7, 2006 Good signing. What I'm amazed at this year is the amount that people are spending for pitching these days. I'm a cubs fan, and I'm glad that they're being a player in the market. But jeebus, 40 million for Ted Lilly? I know that he won't be pitching in the AL East anymore, but that seems pretty high for a second starter who won (I think) 15 games last year.

Thin Spirit 0 Posted December 8, 2006 Good signing. We're talking about the same Gil Meche who is now going to be getting over TEN million dollars per SEASON, right?! This signing is insane! This is just another move that proves the Yanks and Sawx have ruined baseball. Meche was able to go to a contender (Cubs or Jays) for 10 mill a season (even that is FAR too much for him)...instead he chose about 4-5 million more to play for the worst team in baseball and never win. Players do not care about winning anymore, it's a sad state.

The Royals had to sign somebody to bolster their starting rotation. You can question whether or not he was the best, but he may well have been the best willing to come to KC. If it works out Dayton will look like a genius, if it doesn't it will just be another Royals free agent bust.

I know no one is going to take the first step and say, "hey maybe that signing wasn't that bad after all", which means for every time he goes out and performs well I have to kinda throw it in yall's faces

Its going to cost you, although I don't think that he'll give you the innings you need from a number one, it was a good signing considering who was left, and what money they would command.
