Electric Mayhem 35 Posted January 26, 2007 How much is in your 401K?? Just trying to see if I am on track with mine. I guess age matters. on a serious note - you don't want to compare vs. other people. it depends on what you want to have when you retire, what age you want to retire, how much you pan on putting away in the future etc etc. Don't plan your retirement savings based on the benchmarks of unknkown internet associates. Please. Promise EM this one thing.

Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted January 26, 2007 I am 38 and I have no idea how much is in there. I max all of my contributions every year and I know that I won't be able to touch it for a while, so I don't pay attention to any fluctuations.

joeshushu 51 Posted January 26, 2007 I tend to not answer such questions if the asker doesn't offer up his answer first. Fair enough 37 about 230K Can't remember when I started contributing, maybe about 9 years ago, but I have around 85K. 30 years old. From what I have read this is excellent especially for a women (not that there is anything wrong with that) because it seems that women tend to over look retirement savings. I was just curious because I watched one of those PBS documents about Americans saving for retirement. It was scarey how much trouble the average American is in regarding this subject. We as an Industrialized nation are not good savers. We are great spenders however.
jerryskids 6,790 Posted January 26, 2007 Fair enough 37 about 230K In that case, 39 about 300K. My wife and my IRAs from previous jobs got hella whacked in the tech bust (we were both in high tech). I've reduced the amount I currently contribute because I was above the amount matched by my company, and I feel that I am in good shape and can better use those resources elsewhere. TheNewGirl 1,489 Posted January 26, 2007 Fair enough 37 about 230K From what I have read this is excellent especially for a women (not that there is anything wrong with that) because it seems that women tend to over look retirement savings. I was just curious because I watched one of those PBS documents about Americans saving for retirement. It was scarey how much trouble the average American is in regarding this subject. We as an Industrialized nation are not good savers. We are great spenders however. The ONLY reason I started contributing was that I was dating a guy that was considerably older than I was, he worked in the investment portion of the bank that I work for. When I told him I wasn't contributing at all (not even the company match) he convinced me that I needed to contribute AT LEAST the 6% company match, if not the entire 10% max (at the time. It's now 25%). So, I just started doing it, upped it to 10% at one point, when back down to 6% at another point, etc. My father retired a couple of years ago, without hardly anything in a 401K, having to rely on his state employees pension or whatever they offer. It was kinda scary to hear what he'd had in a 401K. MUCH less than what I have currently.
