MDC 7,405 Posted January 29, 2007 I've been told before that muscle mass burns more calories than fat, even at rest. Is there any true to this? I've been hearing conflicting things and I'm just curious. Thanks.

jerryskids 6,790 Posted January 29, 2007 I don't have a link but my understanding is that a pound of muscle burns ~ 50 calories/day just existing. I don't believe fat in and of itself causes the burnination of calories, other than your muscles may get bigger tugging around your lard ass.

So, if someone has 100lb's of muscle, they burn 5,000 calories/day just watching tv?
jerryskids 6,790 Posted January 29, 2007 So, if someone has 100lb's of muscle, they burn 5,000 calories/day just watching tv? That's my understanding. Dunno how much muscle the average body has tho. I've had this discussion with countless people who have told me they are trying to lose weight, so they just do cardio. Cardio is good for weight loss for the time your heart rate is elevated, and is generally healthy for your heart as well, but people need to mix in some lifting/muscle mass if they truly want to have maintanable weight loss. Boz/BoFan 0 Posted January 30, 2007 When you add more muscle, it takes more nutrients to keep said level of muscle at current levels. The calories and nutrients go to muscle available (primary route) and the rest will go to fat (secondary route). Less muscle, more available calories to be stored as fat. But I wouldnt worry about it nancy boy, because testosterone is the godfather of all muscle building agents, and you seem to be lacking. Stick with cardio as I would assume you would rather run in a confrontational situation than stick around to do the heavy lifting.

BudBro 180 Posted January 30, 2007 i think if you do your lifting first, you will burn the glycogen stores or simple sugars first, which will also help with the energy needed to do the heavier lifting. by the time you are finished lifting (if i remember right your body can really only withstand about 40 minutes of lifting before you are being counterproductive), your body will be beginning to obtain its energy from your fat stores. now move to the cardio portion of your workout and you should only need about 20 minutes to effectively "burn" fat from your body. so, even after changing clothes both times, you're in and out of the gym in an hour and 20 minutes. if you go home and eat chips, all bets are off. until you teach your body that you are going to continue to provide it with constant energy and protein, it will hang onto every ounce of fat it can hang onto simply because it doesn't know when you're going to feed it again. people who work out all the time and never look better are the ones who have terrible nutrition habits. 5 or 6 small meals that are not full of fat is the way to go. it's hard to accomplish, but still the way to go. if you simply started to feed your body regularly and more properly, it wouldn't need to store fat and people would lose weight whether they worked out or not.
