Give me your favorite guitar solo ever…

Recommended Posts

First off, I hate guitar solos. They bore me.

Anyway, I do appreciate the talent involved in them. Kind of like opera or ballet. Impressive but boring.

I like Aldo Nova- Fantasy.

The guitar at the end of November Rain is one of my all-time favorites.

Well, if we are only naming one apiece, I will just go with...

First of all, this thread is absolutey awesome. The guitar solo is, by far, my favorite part of a rock song. That's why I'm such a fan of Metallica, Hendrix, Clapton, etc. These guys can all play the hell out of the guitar.

Secondly, I couldn't pick a favorite if I tried. A really good oMetallica one, however, is:

It's not a long solo, but the distinct note in Cherub Rock gives me chills when I hear it...

fast forward to 2:55 for the start of the solo.

I can't say it's my favorite...but it's right up there.

For you so-called "Satch" fans.....here's one most people have never heard.

It's got a great groove to it, and it's awesome live.

Satch rocks...what can I say.

It's worth the 8mins.

That is THE most awe-inspiring, technically masterful, jaw-dropping, mind blowing, soulless, lifeless, uninspired, piece of garbage ever to be played on the guitar.

Joe, Steve, Eddie, Zakk...you name it...would be mind blowingly impressed, and then quickly walk away with a giant frown.

It's utter trash. :(

(but damn...he's extremely efficient and fast, and versed. Man, them arpeggios are just rippin!)

I started playing and seriously listening to guitar before the Beatle "invaded" America. I could have a daily thread about guitar solos and song treatments by particular artist for years and never run out of material.

That doesn't make my opinion any more valid, but I would like to share a few things I like:

:first: Freddie King - Not everything that makes a good guitar solo has to do with playing at the speed of light. Pick up "Woman Across the River" and listen to the laid back solo on "Palace of the King". The solo actually backs off of the intensity of the rest of the song. (He makes you listen.)

Eric Clapton - Bell Bottom Blues. Exteme touch. In parts of the solo he is achieveing a note that is an octave higher than he is fretting by touching part of his finger to the string right after he picks the note on a corresponding point on the neck.

Neil Schon - I really appeciate a good pop solo. I was never a Journey fan, but Neil was always great. My favorite example is the solo on "Foolish Heart". Listen to the way he adds just what the song need during the first part of the solo. He cruises along with the melody and it is quite beautiful. Then he injects a little attitude and interest to the solo. On the way out, he plays a little over the vocal for effect, Brilliant.

Whoever the Guy is in The Gin Blossums - This guy is 10 times the guitarist than a number of more popular pickers. The solo in "Until I hear It From You" is just perfect. He gives the song what it needs without showing off. The real test as a soloist is: What would you do with dead air? Would you come up with the solo on a par with this guy? Probably not. So many guitarist copy what thet hear on records and think they are artist. They are not. They are just organic tape recorders.

Angus Young - This guy kicks a$$. You can remember what he plays. I pick him all day long over Steve Via, who is a genius. Back In Black, babe. :headbanger:

Robin Trower - This is the one heavy guitarist I listen too. Just get the "Bridge of Sighs" CD.

Hendrix - "The Wind Crys Mary" Screw the solo; just listen to the whole thing.

Frank Zappa - Frank plays way over most people's heads, but "Black Napkins" is a good intro to his solo guitar work. If you like what you hear, repeat and vary the experience as needed.

Jeff Beck - "Because We Have Ended As Lovers" To me, Jeff displays the same kind of cruise with the song mode as Niel Schon would use and then just BLISTERS you on the way out.

I gotta sign off. 13 hour day at work.

The guitarist for the song "Foolish Heart" sends his gratitudes. However, Neal Schon did not play on this Steve Perry solo album.

Thank you, IndyTom. Do you know the name of the guitarist and if he appears on any other songs I might have heard?

Neil is still way good for lots of reasons and solos. At the age of 17, he had offers to play with Eric Clapton and Santana.
