Need tips/suggestions on how to do a weekend in Vegas

Recommended Posts

The law firm my cousin works with is flying her to Vegas this Thursday thru Sunday to attend a 4-day conference there. They are paying her expenses which include her 4-night stay at the 'Monte Carlo' Hotel/Casino.

She has offered for me and our other cousin to drive up on Friday to share her free room with her for 2 nights (Fri/Sat) and hang out with her in her 'off time.'

It's not the best time for me to be taking a trip (financially) as I'm about to move and will be spending quite a bit of money on new furniture, etc., but it's hard to pass up the comp'd hotel stay - plus would be really nice to get away for a couple of days... not to mention this will be my first trip to Vegas - Evah!

Any of you 'frequent-Vegas-goin-Geeks' have any tips for me to have a nice time there without spending much $$?

Also - Cousin's can sizes: 38C and (purchased)34D's, respectively. :ninja:

TIA!

If you dress appropriately, you won't have to pay for a single thing the entire time. :ninja:

Just got back yesterday from 5 days in Vegas. :headbanger:

Trying not to spend money in Vegas is like trying to pass up free ice cream. It is real focking hard. The catch 22 is that if you are gambling then you can be comp'd free drinks, food, and even shows. The problem is that you have to be gambling.

If I was you (a woman), I would go and hang out by the pool all day. The forum shops in Ceasers are very close to you and they have all the Prada / Fendi / Gucci stores right there so you can window shop and not be coaxed into actually buying anything because it is so expensive. They also have regular places to eat like the Cheesecake Factory ect. that are not as expensive as the Hotel restaurants. Oh yeah, and room service may actually be pretty cheap.

You can also play nickle slots just to get a gambling fix, and maybe get some free drinks while you are at it.

Thanks! Yes, my cousin and I figured we would spend most of Sat & Sun laying out at the pool. B)

(Thought we could mix our drinks in our room and bring them down in tumblers if we can get away with it). :dunno:

Nickel slots work fine for me - and should get me some free drinks for awhile. :headbanger:

i feel so cheap!

If you've never played craps, it is the most fun game in Vegas. Also a very risky game, but you don't have to play to have fun. Look for a table which is whooping it up and go watch a little. Eventually somebody will ask you to shoot (roll the dice). Especially if you have never played; there is a well-established superstition that craps "virgin" chicks are lucky. Once you do that, you'll be involved and have a greta time without spending any money.

Just a thought.

First thing to do is request a Player's card. It keeps track of how much money and time you are spending gambling. Depending on how much gambling you do, the Hotel gives you complimentary stuff. Free dinner coupons, discounted shows, etc...

Also, don't be afraid to ask the concierge for freebies.

There is a ABC store in the old Alladin shops (It's now called Planet Hollywood). They have Beer/Wine/Liquor @ grocery store prices. I would load up and take it back to the hotel room.

And just so you know, you can make anykind of drink you want in your room and take it anywhere on the strip you want. They don't give a rats ass.

ETA: Aren't you part Italian? If so you have to visit a little Itialian eatery just off the strip. It is behind the Pink Flamingo called Batista's. Don't be fooled by how it looks on the outside, the inside is really cool. I felt like I was in the movie Goodfellas the whole time I was there. :dunno:

One game to try is Caribbean Stud poker. Here is a description:

link

It is not as complicated as this makes it sound; if you know the rules of poker, you will pick it up in a minute.

The beauty of it is you win and lose a lot of hands, so you can stretch your money a long way. You won't win a lot, but you won't lose a lot either.

I'm fascinated watching craps - but don't understand it for the life of me! I'll give it another go by watching for awhile to see if I can pick up on what is going on... :dunno: Thanks for the tip.

You could always go to one of the sportsbooks(not Caesars) and bet a couple of bucks on the ponies or baseball and sit and drink all day for $1 per drink, although I think your pool idea is much better.

If you get in with the guys at a table, they'll be more than happy to explain it to you. On your own, you can try to follow a player who is playing the come line and placing odds on those bets, this is the basic premise of the game. Ignore the prop bets in the middle and people who "buy" numbers. Ignore also anyone who plays the "don't come" line, it will just confuse you more.

Is this really going to be your first trip to Vegas EVAH????

Enjoy yourself and if you weren't on a budget I'd say hit the strip clubs. The vegas strip clubs are some of the best, and we'd love to see pics of you getting a lap dance from a vegas stripper. Not that I've ever been. :dunno:

Oh, and the players card is a great idea especially if you're mainly at one casino. The good thing is that they don't care if you're winning or losing so even if you get on a hot streak and win some you can get comps. They just want you spending time at a slot or table

There is a brew pub within the Monte Carlo that you should check out. Food is your basic pub food (what would you expect?) but priced right, and, if you are a beer drinker, they have a great selection.

Why yes, I am all Italian! This place sounds good - I'll suggest it to my cousin.

Thanks!

Pai Gow poker is also easy to play and can go on forever unless you are unlucky. Play for a couple hours, get the comps and drinks, move on to something else.

I'll look for it. Thanks. :ninja:

I'd read up on Pai Gow before you go. It is not "poker" as you think of it with cards; it uses tiles. I tried playing it without any knowledge and lost interest because I couldn't figure it out on the fly. :ninja:

I think I'll be spending most of my 'gambling' time at the nickel slots... although I really love Roulette.

When i went to vegas a lil while ago i took $700 and came back with $500. I think the fact that i won $4-500 playing blackjack helped. You could try that.

But yea, don't know how you could save money other than buying your liquor from your own city and taking it with you. We were even able to take flasks into clubs and strip clubs. Fock paying $10 a beer.

Easiest way to make the trip on the cheap is to win money.

Nickel slots = Waste of time.

Do the craps table [like somebody said].

You can stand there and have fun while betting -0-.

I can do this...

l assume I'll still get free drinks?

True, especially if you show a lot of cleavage.

This shouldn't be too much of a problem with my 34B's :dunno:

Since you're a chick, probably.

They kinda frown on hanging around and getting free drinks without playing, but attractive young ladies showing cleavage are always gonna get a pass. It keeps the male players happy. And the male dealers.

Or you could lay down a bet every third come-out roll just to keep them happy.

You are in luck. The place where you are staying, The Monte Carlo, offers free Craps lessons every morning. When I went a couple of years ago, it was around 11am. Ask one of the pit bosses and they will tell you when and where to show up. But I warn you to show up at least 15-20 minutes early, as it is a popular lesson and you definitely want to stand on the rail to see. (It was 3 people deep when we took the lesson) They do a 30+ minute lesson featuring fake chips, and they let everyone standing on the rail play along. They also pass along the "basic strategy" of craps...and then at the end of the lesson, they lower the table limits to 2-3 bucks so you get try the game for real, at a low investment.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Wow, that sounds awesome for beginners! I also agree that watching people play is not nearly as instructive as actually playing. Of course, short of a free lesson as you described, usually you have to lose a couple hunny getting the knowledge.

Just bet the table minimum on the pass line and lay double or triple odds.

No other bets on the table will improve your chances.

Of course, once you see people doing other bets and feel comfortable, maybe you throw a couple bucks onto a hard way or something just for fun.

Of course free lessons are a fun and cheap way to pass the time.

The lesson is great. As I mentioned, they taught the game to you using basic strategy and they only glossed over the complicated betting. But after they opened up the table @ really low limits, everyone stuck around, bet the way they told us to and we all walked away 50 bucks richer! LMAO.

BTW - After you take the lesson, go down to the Freemont Street casinos and play craps there. A place like Fitzgeralds will always have low limits and better odds.

Another way to get free drinks if you really don't feel like gambling. Go to the roulette table with a friend. one of you bets on black, the other on red. There's a small chance of losing but it's pretty small and most of the time you'll break even. And you can get all the free drinks you want, minus tipping the waitress.

This is a good way to guarantee losing money. It doesn't sound like much fun either. The other people at the table will think you are retarded.

Whoever said carribian stud is wrong. The odds are worse than blackjack.

If you are only gambling to get free drinks, play slots. Even better, you can sit at one of the bars in the casino and play video poker for 25 cents/hand. You can usually gets drinks really quickly since the bartender is right there. Play as slow as you want.

How do you figure it's a guaranteed way to lose money? You might lose a little but there's only like one slot that isn't color coded, to just barely tip the odds against this sort of play. My buddies did this once while I was playing Blackjack nearby and they didn't feel like gambling. I made a hundred bucks and they just sat at the roulette table drinking. I'd rather do this than slots. You'll go through money a lot quicker at the slot machines than employing the tactic I outlined above.

What about come bets and the associated odds? I typically do two of those along with the pass line. Higher risk, higher reward, but your chances are relatively the same and you stay more involved.

The only time I play the props are if I'm up, and the table is fun, I'll sometimes play the hard way on the point, or maybe a yo bet before the point is set. I know I am pretty much throwing money away, but that is part of the fun of craps. :dunno:

Also if BEG reads this, she will for sure do the lesson thingy, because craps has a vernacular all its own.

All house games have worse odds than backjack.
