kpbuckeye 3 Posted June 7, 2007 Guy just said on radio that NATO busted a shipment of weapons headed to the Taliban, with proof that it was sent by Iranian gov. Guess it just hit the wire. If true, how should it be handled?
MDC 7,961 Posted June 7, 2007 We should invade their country and replace the regime of course. I'm sure they'll greet us as liberators and spread contagious, glorious Democracy throughout the middle east. I bet we could be in and out of there in a matter of weeks for less than $30 billion. wiffleball 4,797 Posted June 7, 2007 Iran and the Taliban had been fierce enemies when the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan, and their apparent collaboration came as a surprise to some in the intelligence community. Seeing as how Iran is Shia and the Taliban are Sunni Muslims and they have been fighting each other violently for 14 centuries, I find it kind of heartwarming that the U.S. can bring these two together. Too bad we cant do that in Iraq.

Too bad we cant do that in Iraq. Actually, we have. I have been reading that Iran (Shia) has been allegedly working with/providing materials to the Shia and Sunni Muslim insurgents in Iraq. Too bad the insurgents on both sides in Iraq are too focking stoopid to realize how they're being played.

Would it somehow help them to refuse weapons from Iran because they're giving them to the other side too?

Would it somehow help them to refuse weapons from Iran because they're giving them to the other side too? They're getting played precisely b/c Iran is supplying weapons to both sides of the conflict. The Sunnis and Shias are willfully allowing themselves to be pawns in Iran's game.

davebg 0 Posted June 7, 2007 Correctored. You won't find me disagreeing w/that. I think that Iran has totally been playing us and making us look like chumps. Unfortunately, short of military force (which I do not think would be a good idea, as I think it would unite Iran's civilians, many of whom are plenty displeased w/their own govt/rulers, against us) I'm not sure what viable alternatives there are. The Sunnis and Shias are willfully allowing themselves to be pawns in Iran's game. If you're an insurgent leader you need weapons and are probably pretty happy to get them regardless of where they come from. I would guess that both sides probably know what's going on and though they may not be happy about it, it doesn't mean they're stupid or getting played. We could go back and forth all day on this one w/out ever coming close to convincing the other to change their opinion. You and I are just going to have to agree to disagree on that point. I suppose your recommendation was to apologize to Iran and let them ship those items to the Taliban, who will subsequently blow up our troops. Good call.
