Driving KC- Des Moines - Rockford - Milwaukee - Pt Washington

Recommended Posts

Taking a driving trip from OK to Port Washington, WI, June 29-July 9. Just the two of us, lots of time.

Any recommendations of places to eat or stay along the route? 70 & 635 into Missouri; 35 to Des Moines; 80, 88 & 39 toward Rockford; 43 to Milwaukee; finish in PT Wash.

How about places to eat in the Pt Washington area? Again, we have time for day trips to surrounding points if there's anyplace highly recommended.

TIA

If you like steak, Coerper's 5 O'Clock Club, Milwaukee, is the best you will ever eat. But, you will need a reservation and that is no small task. You need to start calling (414) 342-3553 immediately upon them accepting them which I think is 4:00 on Weds. Be prepared to hit the redial button a whole bunch of times. Smith Brothers Fish Shanty is an institution in Port although I haven't been there in years.

Thanks. I'll check them out. Pretty big shoes to fill if Milwaukee is going to deliver steak better than we get here in OK.

I've eaten steak all over the US and this is just the best. I recommend the Fillet Mignon. Reservations are far easier during the week. GL

It is not in the best of neighborhoods but don't let that scare you away.

I was trying to think, and if he's just comin up I-35 through KC, I'm not sure what is there that's definitely worth stopping for. i'm sure there's something, just not sure what I would make the priority.

There are tons of restaurants in KC I could suggest, if you're looking for one of the better restaurants in town to hitup, but it might be a little out of the way.

And like I said, you could them come up I-29 to St. Joe, and I'll take you to a kickass restaurant here in town and then you'd just need to take Hwy 36 west back over to I-35. It'd be exactly a half hour out of the way

We hit 29 between KC and getting back on 35 to Des Moines. Actually, it'd be on the way back. Looks like Saturday the 7th. What's your schedule?

Coerpers has a great steak, no doubt about it, but it is in a fairly crappy part of Milwaukee, in all honesty. (C'mon Big Dog, that far up State Street for a tourist? There is a reason that Coerpers has it's own guard and a iron fence around its parking lot.)

If you are a tourist coming to Milwaukee, hit the Third Ward for dinner -- try something like the Milwaukee Ale House, where they make their own microbrew beer on site. It's good stuff, and the seasonal is generally something pretty damned decent. Beer is the reason you come to Milwaukee, so have some of the local stuff that's made right here.

Rock Bottom also makes its own beer on site, but it is a chain -- it does have a great spot on the river, though.

Or, John Hawk's on the river (where Wisconsin Avenue crosses the Milwaukee River, right in the heart of downtown) is good as well.

Pieces of 8 is right on Lake Michigan, and has decent food and a great view, or the Lake Park Bistro (more for lunch) up by UWM along Lake Drive is decent.

Moe's Irish Pub, or Moe's - A Place for Steaks (right across the street) downtown off of Wisconsin Avenue are both good, and have good beer/food/atmosphere.

Hit Water Street for the bars -- it's the closest thing Milwaukee has to a tourist trap, and full of young, scantily clad collegians over the weekend.

On the way up to Port, there is a place in Mequon called "Libby Montanas," which is owned and run by Mark Metcalf, who was the Maestro in "Seinfeld" and played Douglas C. Neidermeyer in "Animal House." It's a decent place for dinner and a beer, and you might see Neidermeyer, so what the hell.

i got nuthin. Do you mean you will be heading south down towards KC on I-29? Cause I-35 merges with I-29 in KC, but I'm about an hour North of that. If you're coming down I-35 from Iowa it'd be kinda out of the way, but if you come down I-29 through Iowa then you'll be coming right through st. joe

well my brother in law owns a bar in des moines called 'tonic' so i guess if you're going to have a drink/ cigar it's a pretty upscale bar... they have like a million martini recipes and carry every beer imaginable... it's right out by the jordan creek mall... there's a PF chang's out there... very good chinese food for a chain restaurant if you've never been to one... there's also a macaroni grill out there that's great... if you are looking for something else there's a restaurant called 'crave' right next to the bar i talked about... it's kind of a mixed restaurant... i've heard they have a really good fondue dinner that's in this private room (it's like 30-40 bucks a head so obviously my cheap ass didn't go in there) but my parents said it was really good. The only time i went there i had a burger... it was good

Food, good beer, scantily clad college girls, and the chance to spot a minor celebrity (though Bob Cobb/Neidermeyer is probably like minor-and-a-half). It's like you live inside my head!

We'll probably be in Milwaukee the night of the 1st (Sunday). How about lodging around the Third Ward? Anyplace special, or just the standards? Any place to avoid?

The nice thing about the Third Ward is that it is basically "right next" to downtown, just south of the high-rise district. The best "big hotel" to stay at would arguably be the Pfister. It's pricey, but its nice.

Otherwise, the Hyatt Regency is neat, and has a "spinning top" restaurant/bar at its top floor which rotates around and let’s you get a view of most of Milwaukee from one seat. Sort of neat.

Otherwise, there are some trendier, smaller places like the Hotel Metro, or the County Claire (which has a great Irish pub/restaurant in it) around town.

One other nice thing about Milwaukee is that cabs are, for a large city, ridiculously cheap. You can get back and forth across downtown fairly inexpensively (I said $10, but it's been a while since I took a cab, and I don't want to be insanely wrong). I wouldn't ever personally take a bus, but that's just me.

If you are in Milwaukee on July 1st, moreover, there is no reason that you should not hit Summerfest. It's the world's largest music and drunk fest.

Good suggestions all except the Pfister. Cramped old hotel rooms do nothing for me personally. As for Coerper's, he asked about good places to eat. I warned him that it is not in a very nice part of town but they do have the best steak in town IMHO. I answered his question. Water street after would make a very good evening.

On second thought, I would also disagree with Pieces of 8. Great views, pedestrian food at best. Maybe a lunch place but nothing more.

On your route if you got the Interstate 88 through Moline, IL to Rockford, IL Here is a couple great places:

Rock Falls, IL - - Near the Interstate off ramp across from a Walmart is a place called Candlelight Inn. They have the best chicken that I have ever ate called "Chicken George". It is a must if you are going by.

Rockford, IL - - They have one of the best Hooters that you will come across. When in Rockford I like a bar and grill called Shooters. It is all sports even has bowling lanes. Great Friday/Saturday night hangout.

On your way to Milwaukee you may also go through:

Aurora, IL which is home to Walter Paytons Roundhouse. Great food, high prices.

Also, places to stay:

Iowa City- Fun college setting town.

Rock Falls, IL- Great pubs and places to eat. Good hotels. Also check out: Kelly's, Corner Tap and Champs.

Avoid Rockford overnight. Go to Dekalb or up to Janesville, WI.

but is it worth it to see 20 yr old chick with low cut shirts... and skirts so short you can practically see there arse even before they sit down...

Just go to whitecastle.com and map your trip out

Pretty slim pickings for sliders along that route. Looks like Illinois, maybe Missouri might be the best shot.

Grew up in Jersey. Usually make a WC trip every time I'm on the east coast.
