How bad are your teeth?

Recommended Posts

Took a 12 year hiatus from the dentist because I hate them. Went about a month ago, and got a checkup. Everything ok, cept have to get my old fillings replaced. I got fillings on both sides of my mouth - upper and lower, total of 6. All within the first 2-3 years I got my adult teeth in, my parents were great about preaching dental hygiene. Probably why I hate the dentist.

Last visit went well, was like a 5 minute job. Went again today, and it kind of blew. Filling was big, so they were drilling for a while. Then they found a slight bit of brownness next to it that didn't show up on the X-Ray and had to make it a little bigger. :dunno: That was fast so it didn't get too much bigger, no need for a crown on the tooth, but they said they were getting close to where the nerve is. So, they may or may not have focked up the nerve, which means I may or may not have to have a ROOT CANAL. Fock...

Good news is it's been about an hour and a half since they shot me up, the novicane is wearing off and I can make my cheek hurt, but the tooth feels fine. But they said it could hurt 1 day from now, 5 years from now. BOOOO...anyways, I'm gonna remain optimistic because it seems cool right now. :) Also on the plus side, when this is all through I'll be glad I have new fillings. Those old metal ones look like crap, with these you can't even see em.

Next side is gonna suck a bit I think too....4th is this little piece of crap filling that should take 2 minutes.

So... how bad is a root canal all you one toofed mofos?

Not nearly as bad as you've heard. It's a pain because it takes two visits. But you get good drugs.

The worst thing about it is the bill. And that's terrifying.

I've had one root canal, from an absess that happened on my first visit to my future wife's parents in bufu Michigan. Happened on the plane, I think contributed by the pressure change (I'm sure it was focked up already), and by the next day it looked like somebody hit me in the face with a lead pipe. That night I sat there swishing vodka with a splash of OJ in my mouth to try to kill the pain, which I'm sure made a good impression on my recovering alcoholic future FIL.

Anywho, ER the next day for some antibiotics, then a local dentist the next day (Monday) where he lanced the focker and said to wait until I returned for the root canal, because it is a two-visit process.

The procedure itself hurt some because one of the roots was completely alive, and no amount of novocaine would completely kill the pain.

That being said, you will need it sooner or later, so my advice is to avoid the first part of my story and get it done.

I probably wouldn't have had anything else if I got these replaced sooner. These fillings are like 20 years old, which based on what I've found seems to be pretty old for a filling. I'm sure it's been worn away for a while so a little crap was able to get in there.

Luckily, it wasn't serious assuming my nerve isn't focked. Still no pain and I'm biting down trying to cause some.

root canals are no big deal. I had a nasty one that I had to go to a specialist for and went to work that night - probably even went to the bar that night. No biggie. Worst part is keeping your jaw open so wide.

(Go ahead with the jokes)

Why am I going to need one for certain? She did make it seem that it's possible the nerve is OK, and I didn't feel any significant pain during the drilling. If the root canal hurts, and no amount of novocaine can make the thing completely pain free, wouldn't I have noticed if they really hit the nerve during this procedure?

I think I'm gonna go with the dentist on this one, unless I have a real compelling reason to get it done.

LOL, I do have good insurance. Hopefully that would help. <_<

I don't recall any pain from my root canal. I mean, there was the sore jaw from having my mouth cranked open for so long. But I don't even remember taking more than one of the Vicodin I got. And that was more because I loves me some Vicodin.

Sports injury resulted in me needing 3 root canals. The roots were so on the brink, that I didn't need anything to numb me at all. Nothing afterwards either. Guess it depends on the situation.

Jess is right though, I could of used something when i got the bill.

Well, I'm a dentist and it varies......

If the tooth is already painful, that means the nerve is in the process of dying and the RCT will initially hurt it not given profound anesthesia. If you have an acute infection, anesthetic only has limited effect.

The best case scenario is that the tooth is necrotic(dead nerve) and then you won't feel a thing at all!

Oh, the best part is that if a patient is being a baby, we will just inject water instead of novacaine, and tell the pt" Hmm the novacain is not working.... better suck it up and deal with the pain, it will be over quick!"

The best part of the RCT is giving the patients the bill afterward :dunno:

I'm a pretty big baby about these things, but she doesn't seem quite that sadistic. :D Besides, I already know that novacaine works on me, so she can't try that BS. :dunno:

Novacaine has completely worn off and I don't feel anything. So I'm guessing that's good.

There was a dentist in Hazleton, PA near my hometown back in the early 90s I think who made headlines because he was shortchanging patients nitrous oxide and snorting it himself.
