Michigan could be off the hook

Recommended Posts

It's over. This has to trump Michigan's loss to App. State.

40.5 point favorites. Home field. First loss at home since 2001. Losing to the whipping boys of the Pac-10. WOW!

Lloyd Carr is sleeping a little easier tonight.

Unbelievable. Let's hope we end up with about 6 one loss teams and a couple teams like BC and USF undefeated. Maybe then we'll get a playoff system.

40.5 point favorites and they're down by 1 with less than one minute left and no timeouts!!!

lol..how is it even close? Since when is Stanford division 1-AA? Captain Comeback is their freaking coach.

I think it's very comparable. Stanford is one of the worst teams in division 1-A. While App State is a division 1-AA team, they were the cream of that crop. USC is the #1 or #2 best team in the country; Michigan was like #5 and got killed by USC in the Rose Bowl.

Not to mention that early on some people were asking if this USC team was the BEST college football team EVER.

To lose at home to a team that was 1-11 last year w/ a guy new QB. MAJOR upset.

I have to disagree...Stanford is a lousy 1-A team..but at least they are in the same conference. Despite the ranking USC was a very overrated #1. It's a monster loss for USC..but Michigan's has to be in the running for biggest upset ever (top 3 if not number 1). At least Stanford whipped San Jose St. who I think could probably beat App State.

Not that it matters but Stanford was the last team to beat USC in the Rose Bowl.

Either way Cal has to be licking their chops.

What's going on with John David Booty? He didn't play well last week and was horrible this week with throwing 4 picks tonight.

You're right to disagree. I could be completely overrating the quality of Div I-AA football and Stanford probably plays in one of the toughest conferences in college football.

While Cal or Ohio State will probably get the #1 spot, BC may finally get the respect they deserve (after their performance, it's a crime if they're not ranked within 3-5).

Does anyone know what the line was on the Mich/ App st. game?? I am guessing that it wasn't 41.

There was no spread on that game. Most "experts" say it would have been between 22 and 25 points.

I dont think you can even make the comparison to the Michigan loss. A division II team, in on one of the most legendary fields (the place, not because of the team that plays there and the bowl game. the actual home field advantage) in a game that they never really controlled whatsoever.

Maybe with Wisconsin and USC losing, my Cats won't fall too far before we take down LSU and Florida in the coming weeks.

App St is the 2 time defending 1AA champion. Big difference between 1AA and DII. They have played other D1 teams well on the road before and though that was the first time a 1AA school beat a RANKED D1 school, they have beaten teams from BCS conferences before.

Stanford over USC might not be as big an upset but its damn close and belongs in the same conversation.

Agree to disagree, I guess.

The real conversation to be had here is the way the focking poll system goes. It shouldn't be "which of the ten traditional powers lost the fewest players from last year?" poll.

Stanford beating USC is the bigger upset. Forty-and-a-half points makes it so. Plus, App State vs Michigan was first game of season. This is midseason. Big difference. We think we know what teams are now. If Michigan had played App State AFTER getting its doors blown by Oregon, it wouldn't have seemed like such a big deal.

Tonight's game is about on par with Syracuse beating Louisville, and I consider both of those to be equal to or greater than App State beating Michigan.

Syracuse beating Louisville is as big of a deal as SC going down to Stanford and both are bigger than Michigan losing to App State? Are you serious?

You're right, no one of any quality has ever come out of Syracuse. It's not like they've had some All-Pros or future HOFers like a Donovan McNabb or Marvin Harrison that are currently in the NFL. Oh wait...

well, they did beat mighty Louisville. With such talent as Chris Red-man (that's really how he says it. bites the damn syllables) as famous alums, it's definitely comparable to the second most storied program in history going down at home to a team that wasn't even eligible to win the same title they are.

Neither loss is comparable to the Michigan fiasco in my book, but I don't see how the Louisville game can even be mentioned. Maybe you've got a point I don't see lol, and I'm not trying to be an ass, that comment just blew my mind and I had to rant lol.

Nothing personal or anything. :shocking:

Also, so people will stop using it to prove a point, the point spread has very little to do with an upset. The "experts" obviously don't know what the hell they're talking about the majority of the time. That was set to try and bait people into betting. Someone predicting that as a "spread" doesn't make a game an upset. The number one team in the country losing at home does, a team with as much history as SC has does, but the "spread" has very little, if anything at all, to do with it.

I heard the exact opposite. The reason there was no spread is because it was supposed to such a blowout. If this is true, then USC/Stanford was supposed to be closer by the mere fact that Vegas choice to rate it.

Nope. Vegas simply doesn't set lines for games between Div 1-A and Div 1-AA teams. It would make their jobs harder, having to set lines for many more games, and there are already a lot of games for just the Div 1-A teams.

Stanford beating USC is the biggest upset I've come across in many, many years of following college football; a dog of 41 points winning outright should be impossible.

In retrospect, Michigan losing to App St isn't as big of a deal, as Michigan got killed by Oregon, and has also struggled mightily with Northwestern and Eastern Michigan. Michigan just isn't all that good this year. USC was ranked #1, and deserved to be at the top of the polls.
