Tattoo’s message lost in translation

By Karen Guregian | Thursday, October 11, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com | N.E. Patriots

FOXBORO -- When Asante Samuel [stats] was a sophomore in college at Central Florida, he was so taken by a Gnarls Barkley song that he decided to make it a permanent part of his body.

On Christmas break, he went to a tattoo parlor and braved the drill and needle. He had the name of the song etched on his left triceps. It’s called “Get Rich To This.” The words are spread top to bottom, encircling the visage of a building.

Before the playoffs last season, it was written - then followed up countless times - that the tattoo read, “Get Paid.”

“I don’t know who looked at it and said it was ‘Get Paid,’ but that’s what it is,” Samuel said, raising his left sleeve to show off the “Get Rich To This” tattoo. “Basically, it was a song by Gnarls Barkley when he was with Goodie Mob.”

Naturally, “Get Rich To This” can also be taken many ways. How does Samuel interpret the meaning as it relates to the song?

“It’s basically whatever you’re doing, you’re making the best of it,” he said. “If I’m writing a paper, I’m getting rich to this. I’m doing it my best, I’m putting my all into it. That’s basically what it is.”

It’s not quite the same as “Get Paid,” and it certainly doesn’t contain the same meaning. Samuel has taken a lot of heat for what many people thought was a tattoo that promoted greediness, selfishness, etc.

“You know how people are who want controversy,” Samuel said. “I don’t know how they got it mixed up, because it’s nowhere near, ‘Get Paid.’ Whoever did it just made a mistake, and it snowballed.”

What's even worse is that the writer now reporting the truth about the story was the same "journalist" that originally reported the tatoo:

Karen Guregian is not a good reporter. I don't read her crap. HTH.

BTW - this was a big deal during his holdout, so yes, it is newsworthy. Now that Samuel is playing pretty well, it becomes even moreso.

MAN WILL THE MEDIA GET OFF THE PATRIOTS BACK ALREADY!!!

I post here to inform you about what's going on with my local team.

I am certain that I know more about them just as you probably know more about whoever it is you follow.

If you do not want the information, I will certainly cease to post it; you are welcomed to continue to turn the forum into a "who's fans suck the most" festival. I suppose that would be fitting to go along with your user ID's "Location: in your mom's mouth".

These are the FACTS:

- it was reported that Asante Samuel had a "Get Paid" tattoo inked on his body during the past season's contract negotiations.

- most believed these reports about the tattoo and the corresponding implications that Samuel was self-serving and greedy.

- It is now being reported that the stories about the tattoo were completely false.

I would hope that if Chad Johnson really did NOT send Pepto Bismol to opposing defenders, a Bengals homer would inform us of that.

I would hope that if Trent Green really did NOT have another concussion, a Dolphins homer would inform us of that.

please, this is the second thread of the day where you dig up on the "media bias" against the team that is as pure as the wind driven snow and it's pretty obvious that no gives a shiit.

I, for one, appreciate the information. I'd always just assumed Samuel had a celtic knotwork band of smurfs around his arm, connected mouth-to-pen!s.

Except that the hack journalist never owned up to the mistake, using the third person to describe those who had reported Ged Paid. "It was written and then followed up many times....." LMBO

How about "I wrote.... etc" ? You know, an actual admisison of faulty reporting.

Female sports reporters. :overhead: :music_guitarred:
