Ted Stevens: Senator no more

Recommended Posts

http://www.adn.com/senateelection/story/593747.html

Mark Begich has defeated Sen. Ted Stevens in the election for U.S. Senate.

The Democratic Anchorage mayor widened his lead to 3,724 votes in today's counting of absentee and questioned ballots. The only votes left to count are approximately 2,500 special absentees from people living outside the U.S. or in remote parts of Alaska with no polling place.

...

Begich would be the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the U.S. Senate in nearly 30 years. His victory would also put the Democrats one step closer to their dream of having the 60 seats needed for a filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate. To get 60 seats, the Democrats would also need Al Franken to beat Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in a Minnesota recount, and for Jim Martin to beat Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a Georgia runoff election.

...

Stevens steered billions of dollars to Alaska and had a hand in most of the major federal legislation that's shaped Alaska. He was honored as "Alaskan of the Century" and the state Legislature named the Anchorage airport after him.

That was before a Washington, D.C., jury found him guilty of seven felonies a week before the election for lying on financial disclosure forms about $250,000 of gifts and home renovations from the oilfield services company Veco.

It's sad that the vote was this close, but at least now the state can save the embarassment of having one of its Senators kicked out of Congress. :argue:

For the life of me I, too, could never understand how the vote was so close. Me thinks there was some funny business "behind the scenes."

At any rate, another corrupt Repuke bites the dust and the Dems gain another seat in the Senate.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is packed full of porkbarrelling crooks from both parties but this guy is one of the all-time worst.

No funny business, we <3 Stevens, Mark Bag-a-sh!t is worthless.

All politicians = corrupt, even your precious little Dems, both sides are just about as wrong as you can be on just about everything.

Bring back the constitution and restriction of executive power.

The Republicans would have lost the seat only temporarily since Palin would have just appointed a new Senator, possibly even herself. Now that option is gone and the seat is Democratic.

I still think that, as far as the Republicans have strayed from their fiscally conservative policies, we still need to have at least the possibility of a filibuster to keep the Dems in check.

I believe that in Alaska the Governor does not just appoint a new person. I think they hold a new election.

You are right. I was guilty of listening to speculation without checking on things myself.

I can vouch that washers is a true Alaskan. Who the hell else would vote for a guy who had been convicted on seven felony counts just days earlier, only because he had an ® next to his name and the other guy had a (D)? I'll go one step further and wager that washers is from Fairbanks. Am I right?

Not true. If a Senator steps down (as Frank Murkowski did in '02 when he became Governor), then the Governor can appoint a replacement (as Murkowski did when he appointed his own daughter, Lisa Murkowski, to his vacant Senate seat). However, if the Senator is kicked out of Congress, then the state holds a special election. My bet is that Stevens would have quit just before getting kicked out so that Palin could keep the seat in Republican hands, and Palin would have appointed herself.

But fortunately we will never know.

Like they have internet in Fairbanks  I'm from Anchorage, and Begich has been nickel and diming us everywhere he can here in town to pay for the rediculous projects hes started like our new convention center :wall: He will be done in 6 years. he barely got the election for mayor, and he barely won the senate seat against a felon, whos case conveniently came out right before the election. We will vote in a young republican and start building up our seniority again.

state law changed to have a re-election. Though if Palin ran, i could guarantee you she would be elected, for better or worse.

They are building a convention center in Ancorage? Ummm... Why? Nobody wants to go to a convention with a 4 hour day and freezing ass cold that costs $1000 to fly to.

Anchorage is a very popular destination spot in the summer (when you get 20 hours of daylight). But yeah, you're right that the Convention Center will sit vacant for at least six months of the year.

We shall see. I am not from Anchorage, so I have to admit that I am not as acquainted with him as you might be. But might I suggest that you at least give the guy a chance? He'll probably be able to get more done than your typical Republican in the next six years, since he will have a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House, and a Democratic President on his side. Plus Democrats will be motivated to keep that seat, so I suspect that Begich might be able to come up with federal dollars for the state here and there.

Big ugly empty building in the middle of downtown as it stands right now, I went to a food show there recently and it was all echoes. Too big for its own good. It cost more than planned, took more time than planned. Typical government building.

I actually work for a cruiseline in the summer, and we get people from all over the world coming to see our state. You'd be shocked at how far people fly to be here (Sri Lanka, South Africa, UAE, Netherlands, New Zealand), and some even do it every year.
